What We're Buying: Summer-Perfect Dresses and Killer Cutoffs
What are we buying this week? We’re glad you asked. Below, we rounded up a few of the things we found so irresistible, we had to have them. And then talk about them at length.
Senior Style Editor Zoë Ruderman: Wedding season is officially upon us, ergo it’s bachelorette party season, shower season, rehearsal dinner season and morning-after-wedding brunch season. Which makes it dress-buying season for just about every woman in America.
I got one that could work for any of the above events. (OK, let’s be honest, I usually roll to post-wedding brunches in cutoffs, T-shirts and sunglasses.) It’s the Juicy Couture scallop lace mini, which is so incredibly flattering and happens to be on sale for $134.99.
Plus, if you sign up for the Juicy newsletter, you get 20% off your first purchase. Facebook friends, get ready to see a whole lotta this dress.
Style Director Andrea Lavinthal: What’s the one thing I definitely don’t need to buy? Denim, in all its iterations. But then a very stylish friend told me about Koral, a line of jeans from one of the co-founders of 7 For All Mankind (one of my favorites), and of course I had to check it out.
I was about to pull the trigger on yet another pair of dark skinnies when these more seasonally appropriate cutoffs caught my eye. They’re short without being obscene and perfectly frayed in all the right spots (the “48 Month” in the style name refers to the amount of time it’s supposed to look like you’ve owned them).
The little voice in my head said, “You already have four pairs of cutoffs at home,” but I ignored it and bought them anyway. I plan to wear them all summer long with everything from a plain white T-shirt to a printed silk tank.
Style and Beauty Editor Pamela Edwards Christiani: The hanger did nothing for this dress, so I’m glad I took the time to try it on last weekend — this Gap zigzag print maxi (now sold out!) is a real gem.
I was so pleased when I left the store, because the dress is extremely flattering to curves, super soft and the neckline is safely sexy. I wore it to a cookout on Friday, with wedges and a jean jacket and then a fancier dinner on Sunday, with a cropped white blazer and metallic sandals.
I got a zillion complements that night, which did make me feel better about dropping $79.95 on a jersey dress. Plus, now that I’ve worn it twice in one weekend, my guess is that the cost-per-wear should be excellent by Labor Day.
