Who Missed the Memo: The Stars Who Punked Out of the Met Gala Theme

The anticipation leading up to this year’s Met Ball was especially high thanks to the theme of the evening: punk. We envisioned plaids, spikes, sculpted skyhigh hair and nose rings. And for the most part, stars delivered. (Had there been metal detectors at the entrance, the majority of guests wouldn’t have made it through.) But four celebs didn’t deliver: Heidi Klum, Kate Upton, Gwyneth Paltrow and Renée Zellweger seemed to have glossed over the part of the invitation that specified the dress code.

Klum hit the carpet looking like a very sexy mother of the bride in a silvery gown with a sculpted, embellished bodice (and not even a little bit of a nod to punk with her makeup, which she kept minimal and fresh).

Upton had us wondering if she got lost on the way to a fancy beach party in her off-theme (albeit gorgeous) Diane von Furstenberg tank maxi in the decidedly un-punk shade of Kelly green.

And while we acknowledge that showing up to one of the biggest nights in fashion with visible tan lines is certainly anti-establishment, Paltrow’s bright-pink Valentino Haute Couture design missed the mark. (Anna Wintour may have us convinced that “pink is punk,” but when the silhouette looks like this, the first word that comes to mind isn’t rebellious.)

PHOTO: CHECK OUT THE ONE STAR WHO TOOK THE PUNK THEME VERY SERIOUSLY!

And what can we say about Zellweger? Either the woman is gravely allergic to spikes or she simply doesn’t prescribe to dress codes. Why else would she have selected a knee-length, long-sleeve LBD with beading and coordinating pumps, plus twee bangs?

Do you like any of these stars’ looks (even if they didn’t follow the dress code)?

Yeah, very few nailed the punk theme. I liked Christina Ricci, Anne Hathaway and Rosie Huntington-Whitely. They took chances with their dresses/make-up and that’s way more fun than the boring red carpet looks above.

I think most of them looked horrible…makes me glad I don’t have a stylist

Yeah the outfits were horrible this year! I can count only 2 or 3 celebs that looked good. I hope they never do a punk theme again because most of the celeb failed it epically!!!

The punk theme wasn’t a good idea in my opinion. I’m not sure why it was chosen. I probably would have balked at it as well. All of the above outfits look good except Gwyneth’s. That frock she has on is shapeless.

What a relief to see these ladies dress out of type and messied up a bit. For many, the dress code appeared to own them, but there were many ladies who held their own even if the looks weren’t “conventional.” Sienna Miller, Rosie Huntington-Whitely… I was very surprised by Taylor Swift, Carrie Mulligan, Emma Watson. Nina Dobrev’s attitude was even punk. Kate Beckinsale worked it. Care Delevingne, Rita Ora, Hilary Rhoda. This just looked like a fun place to be!

I like Sienna Miller, and Jennifer Lopez.

But those four looked much better than the rest of them

I originally was excited by the Punk theme of this year’s Gala until I saw everyone either blow it off or miss the mark completely. Only a few people nailed it. There have been some lame themes in the past (Model as a Muse year, Goddess year) so it was kind of a bummer to see people not run wild with the Punk idea and go for it. 2008 was a fun one (the Superhero / Fantasy year) and a few people pulled that one out pretty well.

Some women aren’t comfortable in dog collars and chains. Madonna I didn’t even recognize.
