Maggie Gyllenhaal's Pixie Cut: Why She Went Short

With Michelle Williams growing out her super-short hair, someone has to take her spot on Team Pixie — and it looks like that someone is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who debuted a cute crop a few weeks ago.

But though she’s rocking her new do, it was more a result of necessity than desire, she told PEOPLE at the Kate Young for Target launch party.

“I originally cut it … in, like, a bowl cut for a movie,” she said. “But when I got home I was trying to figure out what to do with it, so I asked Serge [Normant] to cut it, and he cut it all off!”

Luckily she likes the new look, but she does confess that she sometimes daydreams about long, luxurious locks.

“I have a fantasy of what it would be like to have mermaid-style long hair, but I wasn’t even close to that when I cut it last time,” she said.

And as for how husband Peter Sarsgaard reacted to her dramatic new look?

“I think the way he feels about me really does not have a lot to do with my hair,” she said, “and I’m really incredibly grateful for that.”

Tell us: Do you like Gyllenhaal’s short cut? Would you rock a similar look?

I like Maggie but I do not like the style on her.

Love the cut on her! Short hair, done right, is always better than long hair.

No one said, “Maggie, did your husband quit loving you over your haircut?” They just asked what his opinion of it was. Her answer was snooty and pretentious.

Heather on

I don’t think it was snooty. I think she understood that the journalist was really asking how a man is reacting to her hair, since most men prefer long hair.
