Red Carpet Trend Report: Center Parts, Flirty Dresses and the Shoes You Can Toss Now

Looking to do a little spring cleaning this weekend? Here’s a handy guide to the hair and
clothing styles that stars are loving more than ever these days — as well as one that’s starting to fizzle.

Up: Center parts. After years of side-parted, beachy waves, it looks like we’re heading into the “center-parted, stick straight” phase of popular hairstyles. In addition to Jessica Szhor, we saw this dramatic do on Lana Del Rey, Kaley Cuoco and Emilia Clarke. Warning: this hairstyle is not for everyone, but if you’re feeling flatiron-happy these days, now’s your moment.

Up: Sweet A-Line Dresses. Feeling impatient for nicer weather to arrive? Stars including 14-year-old fashionista Kiernan Shipka, Emmy Rossum and Bella Thorne agree with you: they’re all breaking out their prettiest spring dresses a little early. Unlike the trend above, this look is universally flattering (and is guaranteed to put you in a flirty mood!)

Down: Clunky boots. Can we all agree to stop tucking our jeans into boots that cut us off mid-calf? Carrie Underwood‘s look would have been a knockout with a pair of pumps, or even ankle booties. Instead, these boots have a stumpifying effect. Put ‘em in your “donate” pile!

Another style back from the 1970s. I guess what goes around, comes around.

I hate center parts. They’re so boring.

i cant believe you people, wasting clothes like that. shame on you. Some of us have no money for a new wardrobe every week, let alone every year. Your vanity will be your downfall. May god have mercy on your worthless sinning souls.

Safe to say youall aren’t country then?

love my boots on

I’ve got ankle booties, those like Carrie’s, and the ones that go up to my knees. And ya know what? I like the ones that are like Carrie’s the best. So, people (magazine), why don’t you stick to cleaning out your own closet. I’m not gonna throw out what I like or what looks good on me just because it’s “trendy” to.

Love my boots too on

Very silly article. About the height of boots? You have got to be kidding me.

Seriously on

OR…..you could just put your jeans OVER the boots if they offend you that much. Not all of us wear skin tight pants or have money to throw away perfectly good boots. Ridiculous.

Carrie looks fine. People with a brain don’t follow a trend just because some self-proclaimed expert says it’s “in”. Wear what YOU want to wear and be yourself!

Awwwshucks on

I couldn’t believe the boots thing either….where I live snow’s ‘still’ up to my neck and I’m ‘rock’n my calf and knee boots like there’s no tomorrow….can I get an Amen up in here?

I love carries boots with her outfit!!

Wow. Who can afford to just throw out a pair of boots because they are no longer “trendy”? Not me. I’ll keep my “clunky” boots and wear what I feel looks good. Not up with the so called crowd.

Anon on

To me the hair parted down the middle has only looked good on a few people. JLo, The Kardashians and Paula Abdul. Def NOT for everyone

Who *are* these people? Don’t even recognize any of the names but Carrie Underwood. Seriously, we’re supposed to take a page from their style books – including that child? Is this an early April Fools joke??

Sarah on

Just FYI, Kiernen Shipka is 13!

I’m going to go through my closet right now and throw out all of my out of style clothes and shoes. I’ll be expecting a check from People to cover the cost of my new items… wait, what? People is NOT going to buy me new clothes even after telling me to throw out my perfectly good old ones. This is moronic, if you have money to burn like that then perhaps suggesting you put it to use helping the less fortunate would be a much better idea than throwing it away

There’s not a thing wrong with Carrie’s outfit, or shoes.

An a-line dress is not fitted at the bodice & flared out from the waist, as little Miss Keirnan’s is.

Center parts need to go away indefinitely! It is such an unflattering style, and very few people can pull that look off due to the asymmetry of their faces. No, no, NO!

Ali on

To be fair, People did say put them in your “donate” pile! I’m not saying throw them away or don’t… But that’s what the article said…

Agent_X on

Um, People Stylewatch, how painfully out of date you are. Ankleboots are what’s dying out after multiple seasons of overuse already. Come on.

veee on

Pumps? Ankle Boots? NO THANK YOU. Give me my tall boots, any time, anywhere.
