Jennifer Aniston’s Stylist Shares Inside Scoop on Her Oscars Hair

02/26/2013 at 02:30 PM ET

We know why Jennifer Aniston picked her dazzling red Valentino gown for Sunday’s Oscars, but what was the thought behind her hair?

Her longtime stylist, Living Proof’s Chris McMillan, says the star wanted to stick with what works. “She wanted to keep the makeup natural and the hair natural,” he says in the exclusive clip above. “I think it’s about, at this point, being really comfortable on the red carpet.” Amen!

To hear more on Aniston’s Oscar night look, and to hear McMillan give a how-to on the night’s hot short hairstyles (his faves were Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron), watch the clip above.

I would not be boasting that I did Jen Aniston’s hair at the Oscars for this year. Her fly aways were out of control, her dye job looked off(too beige, it washed her out), and her hair looked dirty and clumped together–even my husband said her hair looked rough and he NEVER notices that sort of thing. Personally, I’d love to see her wear her hair up or softly waved or just do ANYTHING with it other than wear it flat and down. It’s boring to see her at award shows because she never does anything that isn’t “safe”. Her “natural” hair and makeup looked more appropriate for wearing sweats on her sofa and watching the Oscars from home instead of attending them.

Melissa B on

I like Jen, but man I wish she would change it up. Always has hair down, black dress. The most she’ll do for change is white/nudish dress or on occasion red. Wear some yellow or pink and put your hair up! Who cares about your chin girl! You’re beautiful!

Emily on

I like Jen, and she has a very carefree personality. The hair fits her. I would like to see it up on occasion, but slicked straight back. I hate that hairdo on all women. I ‘d love to see her in a very deep blue, so her beautiful bright blue eyes would be outstanding.

rev on

it’s time to get rid of the “Rachel” haircut!

Rolyat on

Her hair looked tired and dried out. So her stylist should keep his mouth shut before he ruins his reputation. It needs a hot oil treatment or just a new style.

Jenn on

I loved the dress, but I thought it would have been more striking with pulled back hair and some sparkly earrings. But she does have a signature look, she’s kind of known for her hair.

Nicole on

Isn’t that her only look? I mean, it’s like she’s scared to even go the tiniest bit out of her comfort zone. It’s too bad she doesn’t try some of the styles that Jennifer Garner tries. Some of those soft and romantic looks might look really pretty on her. Especially since she’s invested in that hair product company…

Guest on

I love Jennifer too, but that was the worst I have seen her look in a long time. That hair was really bad. It felt as if she woke up, brushed her hair, threw on a ball gown and went to the Oscar’s. That is the most boring hairstyle I have ever seen on the red carptet. She should try a little harder or don’t bother going. It’s Hollywood’s biggest night. You know you have to try a little harder. The natural makeup didn’t work either. Her skin didn’t look good enough to pull off the glowy, natural look. I would love to see her go glam for once. Take a note from Reese Witherspoon’s hairstylist. Now that was fabulous Oscar night hair! Chris McMillan shouldn’t put his name out there that he did Jennifer’s hair. It was a mess. Sorry Jen.

Sandra on

i love jen as much as anyone but that was an issue for me at the oscars. i hated the hair down with the dress. It was too casual. i am seeing a bit of goldie hawn in her. the same hairstyle all the time.

Jane on

Why is she known for her hair? Jennifer Lawrence has long, thck naturally blond hair, others have much nicer hair than Annistons, so I just don’t get the fuss about her hair.

Elisa on

Her gorgeous hair is one of her assets. If she pulled it back it would draw more attention to her – less than average – face.

Guest on

Mine isn’t do much with the cut but the color. I wish she would stop the blonde highlights and just go darker.

Debi on

I don’t like Jens hair up. Maybe a hairstyle where the hair is half up and half down. I liked the dress, but I hateb that color. She looked good tho, and she and Justin go well together.

A disappointed fan on

It was lazy and showed her fans that she couldn’t care less about putting forth an effort and getting “done up” up for them. It was also conceited of her to think that she can do whatever little work she wants and her fans will all give her a standing ovation for it. Why was she there anyway? If you don’t want to step it up for the night then just stay home!

brittme on

WHO CARES? jennifer aniston’s hair is always down, and always the same. why is this a story? she’s hasn’t been on tv in years-why are we still talking about her this much?

Kim on

I think she is beautiful inside and out, and I love the fact that she is just Jen. Too much fake out there, and it is so refreshing to see a star do what she is comfortable with instead of what everyone else thinks she should be doing! Rock on, Jen!

Surfin on

She left it down, like she ALWAYS does, to cover her face!

pam on

She is one boring, homely woman that you should file in your Kardashian/Chelsea Lately/E bin. Wasn’t People created to inform the world of interesting people…do you really find this article, or this person, interesting?

Jenna on

I love this model’s hair!
Also, I thought Jennifer’s hair and makeup looked amazing!

nice on

It’s always the same…boring. And she has a stylist too. I’m sure he can handle giving her a proper updo or something.

Anna on

Her hair was horrible! It was sticking up in the back like a bunch of little hairs. It almost looked like it had been singed/burned and the little hairs were standing up. Strange is what I thought. She wears her hair the SAME all the time—could have put it up for this shin dig.

Kim on

If “natural” means stringy and flyaway, she nailed it.

Diana on

she looks like she traded her fashion statement bikini for a red prom dress and went to the Oscars. Her hair needed to be brushed and put up, you saw the hair before you saw anything. Sorry “poor Jen” fan club but she looked rough.

Diane on

I love Jen but feel the same as most. I think she is insecure about her ears. She wears her hair down ALL the time, but when I saw her at the Oscars that’s the first thing I noticed, not her beautiful dress. I said Her is down!! C’mon Jen, do something different!! Please!!!!!

mrscrutty on

I’m not saying that she has to do the Jlo slick-your-hair-back-so-it-gives-you-a-facelift-look, but she needed to do something different. Same thing with her makeup. She doesn’t need a heavy smokey eye, but something a little more dramatic. I don’t think its a “I’m just comfortable being me.”. Its a “I’m afraid to try something new.”. Its the same thing as seeing someone wearing the same Joan Jett hair and heavy eyeliner look they sported in high school. This was the Oscars and it didn’t involved “that other couple”. She could have stolen the spotlight, but instead she decided to play it dull…I mean safe.

Annlynn on

To answer the title of this article: Because Jennifer Aniston is boring. Same hairstyle, same clothes, same vacation spots, same movies. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Why do you even need a hair stylist if you are doing the same thing over and over again?

IToldYouSo on

she’s boring and i’m bored with her. it was the oscars for crying out loud. without the dress – she looked like she was going to yoga or the grocery store.

Ali on

Agreed Pam!! Well said!!

margaretames on

Is it sad to be known only for you hair? I thought she looked like she was trying to be 20 again….

Allie on

I am in agreement with the other posters. “What works”, didn’t work with that gorgeous dress. It looked like the she couldn’t be bothered getting ready.

DoSomething on

Wanna know the real reason why Jen ALWAYS were her hair down and the SAME way — constantly??? Well, because she can and Hollywood glorifies her just the same. This chick is so ‘regular’, I dont know what the big deal is…okay, she USE TO BE married to one of the sexiest men in Hollywood…so??? She is not the most beautiful, she has an odd face (see her 1st movie back in the day…huge nose, no chin, round cheeks, etc). She has come a long way but those old insecurities are hard to beat. Let’s forget ‘vanilla’ jen Aniston and move on!

Pinkdaisy on

She is pretty, that’s about it. She can definitly wear her her half up or all up and still look great. She probably wears her down b/c of her chin. That’s silly, she would look very nice with a different style and a different color. Go for pink, yellow, orange, blue, you can pull it off Jen you have a great body!

Nannyto1 on

I’d love to see her with her hair up. But I can understand wanting to be comfortable too. She looked beautiful anway.

kathi on

Its her hair so who cares. She’s always natural and carefree and she’s happy. Hair….whatever.

menotyou on

FYI–this is a non-story. She ALWAYS has her hair down.

Hippychk13 on

This was “living proof” that I will not be buying her new product line. Her color was horrible and her “natural” look of wearing it down was equally horrible! Flyaways, ratty ends, the list goes on. She needs a good 2-3 inches cut off. Chris McMillian…this was an epic fail!

HJM on

I am probably alone on this one: I don’t like Jennifer Aniston. She’s a selfish, self-centered woman who makes a lot of money and is blonde. Period. I do not care at all about her hairstyle, her many boyfriends, her wedding. Brad did the right thing when he dumped her. Now he was the smart one.

Tanya on

I am so happy to see so many people agree with me. I thought she looked nice, as she always does, but my first thought was “Oh mine, why is her hair not up with that gorgeous dress”. Jen, time to do something different. You are starting to bore everyone, even your fans.

K on

Good lord, y’all! The woman likes to wear her hair down. It’s what makers her feel comfortable. And isn’t it about how she FEELS rather than how YOU think she should look? What I’ve always admired about Jen’s style is that she seems to know who she is, and is completely okay with who she is.

Flying Files on

There is nothing “wrong” with having the same look all the time. If she’s comfortable with it why deviate! I don’t like tattoos, strange hair colors, etc. So I appreciate people that have a classic look.

PK on

I like JA, but at what point do you go, “I think I can handle this look on my own”? Who needs a stylist for hardly any makeup and straight hair?

karen on

Wow! Aniston’s publicist is working over time this week.

Chloe on

I think she is so pretty but needs to change her look big time. Darker hair, down or pulled back. Deep blue dress or even a plum color would look beautiful on her. No more highlights!

Linda on

This woman ate the same salad for 10 years.

MD on

what is the point of going to the Oscars if you want to keep your hair and make-up ‘natural’?! And be ‘comfortable’ on the red carpet?!! That is the most ridiculous excuse Ive ever heard! Why not just own it and say Jen doesnt like her hair up and prefers to wear it down. If she’s going to always go with that look (hair down) she most certainly shouldve worn a different dress. It looked very awkward on her. She wouldve looked great, edgy and gorgeous, MODERN and sexy in Halle Berry’s dress. She looked like a little girl playing dress up. Plus it was too long.

Isabelle on

LOL @ Linda’s comment!!! Very true!

jlawlov on

@PK
Harly any make up? That has got to be a joke. He always has he face baked in make up. Look at the close ups of her face. Her hair are thin and she wears extensions.
Jennifer Aniston is a boring attractive TV star that got lucky to marriage a movie star and divorcing him. Folks have pitying her for the last 9 years. Folks don’t even like her, that’s why her films fail, they just pity her.

Leah on

Certainly agree with these posts. You NEVER see Aniston;s hair any other way…but down and dried out looking. She would have looked so much “dressed” if she had done something different with the hair and worn some gorgeous earrings. It’s fine to be comfortable, but you can go to some effort to look nice and still be comfortable.

Tiffany on

Her hair looked how it would on a day to day basis…Def could have done something different that would have looked better with the dress IMO.

Jemina on

Are we still talking about her boring hair???????
She is as boring as watching paint dry.
All she is is hair, hair, hair.
She wasn’t even nominated , she was just a presented and People has devoted way too many article to her.

faye on

Jen looked just as she always looks .. boring.

Linda on

Her hair looked boring as usual. I wish she would change it up sometimes. She is pretty but seems bland and boring sometimes.

fanofboardwalkempire on

I thought Jen looked perfect! The look was perfect and casual and elegant with the red gown!

Gigi on

Dumb man! It’s a night of glamour and that is what the fans want to see! Jennifer Aniston’s hair has looked bad for years. I miss the famous hair cut and color from the Friends days! At least then she had style! I guess those days are gone. Maybe with the new husband her style might come back but the dude plucks his eye brows too much. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Garner looked stunning. Take notice Jennifer Aniston!

Steenie on

I am one of Jennifer’s biggest fans – she’s probably number one on my girl-crush list and I absolutely adore her. But her hair on Oscar night? Ugh. No. It had fly-aways like you see at high school prom! It looked tired and a like it needs a deep conditioning. And seriously – she’s a GORGEOUS woman, she needs to quit being so afraid and do something different. She looks beautiful with it up and she should go for it. She’s become a bore – the last thing she should want!

kym on

I thought Jen looked like she was “trying” on dresses. Once she selected that dress she didn’t do it any with it. She was my vote for most bored and “over it”.

Guest on

Her dress was outstanding, amazing color and the fit was beautiful. The hair NOT SO MUCH. It was pitiful looking and it has always been her crowning glory! It is time for a change Jennifer or get rid of your stylist.

estfar on

Does anyone really care about his has-been? Aniston lives for the limelight. She should simply fade away. Not interesting and not interested in anything she does. She is a copycat who needs to show the world she stole a man from someone else. Why does she need another wedding extravangaza? Look at what happened the last time she spent millions on a limited engagement run.

Deni Smith on

She is a mediocre actress and while she is pretty, she is not a knock-out. I’m surprised she is not bored with her hairstyle yet. The most she does is add a few highlights, maybe cut an inch off of it. Yawn. I doubt people are running to their stylists now asking for her hairstyle like they did when she first appeared on friends with “The Rachel”.

hannah on

I think Jen is insecure (though doesn’t need to be) and that she hides her face behind the hair. She simply doesn’t look as good with her hair pulled back. She’s getting older and more self conscious.

BBB on

Her hair is naturally wavy and also brunette so keeping it pin straight and blonde isn’t natural but I understand what he meant–an everyday look for her.

AnnieW on

Jen- we BEG you – try a new ‘do. You could have such fun with different styles. It’s enough already with the same thing…time for a change – even if just for red carpets. Put it up – a messy bun or something. NEW is good.

AmyRene on

She is BORING..her hair never changes..always looks like she needs to brush it.

Dee on

Don’t get all the hype about this woman.

Lola on

I just got my People magazine. Her hair does look really bad. But I didn’t realize how bad her makeup was…

Guest on

I love her hair – for everyday! But for the Oscars I would have liked to have seen something – anything! – different! She could have even kept it down but done curls, or a dramatic side wavy hair or a fancy hair clip. The other American Sweetheart presenters (Reese and Sandra) did that and looked all the better for it!

s on

i have never once seen jennifer anniston with her hair in an exciting style or interesting change of style for any award show. same old thing constantly..

Cita on

She always has it down because she is covering her big ears!

Jills on

There are times to look natural and times to look like you made an effort. The hair and the dress did not go together. It’s like she went to a dress fitting and never got out of the dress.

Jamey on

Good for her for going with something she was comfortable with. She looked great! Natural beauty is the best beauty. I’m glad she didn’t feel compelled to paint her face up or plaster her hair. She is who she is and I, for one, am glad she isn’t worried about what everyone else thinks. Being happy with yourself is more important than making everyone else happy.

Julesy on

Her hair is so b-o-r-i-n-g. It hasn’t changed for at least 20 years. Give it at least some curls.

deedee on

Her hair looked like she got out of the shower and blow dried it no style nothing boring just like her.

Janine on

She pregnant that why she looked all washed out !

Mayr on

I loved Jen’s hair at the Oscars. Also, Sandra Bullock’s hair was straight at the Oscars. I loved her hair too. Jen continue to be yourself and all is/ will be fine. Loved the orange reddish dress on you too!

LT on

Jennifer is too old to still be sporting the casual, straight hair and natural makeup look that she had in her 20′s. I agree with other respondents that her look was way too casual for the Oscars. She should have taken the opportunity to step out of her comfort zone by trying glam makeup and a polished updo with that beautiful red Valentino gown.

When I looked at her while she was being interviewed on the red carpet, I couldn’t help but notice that she is starting to look like a younger Barbra Streisand. Jennifer’s usual hair and makeup looks very similar to Barbra’s.

virginia on

Jennifers hair style is stuck in the 60/70′s hippie era. It’s time she reinvented her look it has become soooo boring!

mybri on

For an event like the Oscars, don’t you think she could change the same old same old?
Add a curl if you must wear it down?
Most of these actresses have on very expensive, exclusively made gowns just for them, millions in diamonds and their hair is all over their heads,, straight, stringy, and falling into their eyes. UGH.

Kim on

I’m confused. Her hair looks the exactly the same every time she steps out her door. I think I’ve seen it up a couple times but whether it’s the Oscars, other Red Carpet events, going to the grocery store, eating out, going for coffee…she has the same boring hairsyle. What is the obsession with this woman? Even her acting is boring. Every role she plays in the movies is the same. Just change the words and “insert Aniston here…” Geez I woud think she’d bore herself.

Katie on

Aniston’s hair is not different at all. she has had this hairstyle for 20 years. It’s boring.

Rose on

If she wanted to be that comfortable to show up with her hair looking as bad as it did then she should of stayed home. For a woman who lives for her career and looks you would think fixing her hair would be a priority.
