From Homeless in the Congo to the Oscars Red Carpet: The Story You’ve Got to Read Before Tomorrow

One of the best stories from this year’s Oscars ceremony isn’t taking place on screen, but rather on the red carpet.

Rachel Mwanza, the 16-year-old star of the Best Foreign Language Film nominee War Witch, will be joining her fellow nominees in L.A. after obtaining a visa from the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo just days before the Oscars.

The young actress was “discovered” by the War Witch team from a documentary called Kinshasa Kids, which portrayed the life of Mwanza and other children living on the streets in the Congo.

Since being cast in the film, in which she plays a child kidnapped and enslaved to a life of guerilla warfare, her life has changed dramatically — from having a home and education paid for to winning a best actress award at the Berlin Film Festival.

And since her flight arrived late Friday night, she needed a red carpet-worthy dress quickly, which is where Rent the Runway stepped in.

The designer rental service rushed Mwanza several dresses to wear to the Independent Spirit Awards Saturday, from which she chose Kate Spade New York’s “Tiebreaker” style, adding Chamak by Priya Kakkar bangles and a Judith Leiber clutch.

“I’m so excited to be in Los Angeles. I’ve never seen the ocean before!” Mwanza tells PEOPLE through a translator. “I’m tired from my long trip, but way too excited to rest!”

She shared exclusive shots with PEOPLE (above) of her trying-on process, including shots of her caretaker “Mama” helping her zip into her final dress, and the many jewels she was sent to choose from.

And it didn’t take much to get Mwanza ready for her high-profile debut: “I’m going to work it on the red carpet,” she says. “I’ve been practicing my poses!”

The one disappointment from her trip so far? No sightings of a certain superstar. “Beyoncé is my favorite in the whole world. Why is she not here?!” Mwanza jokes.

Below, see a shot of Mwanza and her War Witch producers Marie-Claude Poulin and Pierre Even at the Independent Spirit Awards, and be sure to watch her film, which will be On Demand beginning Tuesday and in select theaters March 1.

And keep an eye out for her at the Oscars Sunday night, where she’ll be wearing a top-secret dress made for her by an African designer. Can’t wait to see her poses!

Msfaye2u, huh? People from Africa are not only black. Many south Africans are white, with blonde hair and blue eyes, actually. I have a friend from SA who is exactly that. But, why does it even matter? She is beautiful and she has been given an incredibly opportunity which she can accomplish great things with, as many of every race do! Be happy for her!

msfaye2u. your logic is flawed. What about Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Martin Luther King Jr, Rhianna, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Danny Glover, Samuel L Jackson, Oprah Winfrey????? Are they all blond and blue?? No. Keep your hate speech and negativity to yourself.

Ray, what part Of the DRC dis you go to? Worse place and describing it close to the end of the world?? Congo is a very rich country, and if not for greedy people who are controlling the world, this would have been the best place to visit. I have seen poverty in all parts of America, people starving, the homeless sleeping on the streets and eating from garbage can. Next time you decide to comment and make false accusations about a country in which you only spent an hour at the airport, chech your facts before posting and making false statements. Felicitation Rachel. Bisous à toi. Vive notre beau pays CONGO.

Msfaye2u:
I have decided since you gave such a great reason as to why this girl wont succeed, I am going to follow that advice. I must not be rich and famous because although I am white, I am not blonde hair and blue eyed. Well at least 2 of my 3 kids will make it in this world. My oldest has brown hair and green eyes so there is no hope for him. Msfaye2u,get over the race card. You really can’t play that anymore. Try getting off your lazy a** and do something worth while with your life.

Msfaye2u:
Who are you going to blame next for your failures? Is it going to be the half black president? Maybe he is not black enough for you so go ahead and blame him. Not getting enough free stuff from him yet?

msfaye, are you crazy? Really?? Many of the most popular actresses and actors are people of color. How many blond, blue-eyed people do you even know these days? Black actors and actresses are winning awards right and left, and the only time they drop out of sight is if they act crazy, or they don’t do a good job. In case you haven’t noticed, one of the most beloved people on TV right now is Robin Roberts, Whoopi Goldberg is the head guru on the View, Monique won an Oscar competing against the best out there, and who knows why Gabby didn’t get the Best Supporting, except the competition was pretty fierce! Who the heck cares about color except very few rednecks so far out in the sticks o one even knows them! There are plenty of white actresses who never get another good role after the one the are nominated for. Sheesh, take and nap and wake up to smell the coffee!!!

Misfaye2u:
First off, there is no such thing as a coveted race. Second, this “coveted race” of yours has to go back to nazi germany where hitler wanted his aryan nation consisting of blonde hair and blue eyes therefore creating his superior nation. Everyone else was targeted. And then you have alot of A-listers who are are of african american descent. Get a life, because there is no such thing as a coveted race.
I hope Rachel wins!
