Octavia Spencer: ‘I Refuse to Wear a Muumuu’ to the Oscars!

Long gone are the days when Octavia Spencer couldn’t find someone to dress her for awards ceremonies. These days, the star relies on Tadashi Shoji, who designed the stunning gown she wore to accept her best supporting actress Oscar last year, and for good reason.

“It’s very difficult to make a woman of different sizes look as chic, as sexy, without making them wear a tent,” Spencer explained at L.A.’s Women in Film pre-Oscar party of her fondness for the designer. “Normally, that’s what they give you. ‘Here is your designer dress, but it’s a tent.’ I’m sorry, I just refuse to do that. It’s not gonna happen, honey! I’m not going to wear a muumuu!”

So what does the presenter plan to wear Sunday night? Even she doesn’t know. “I’m down to two, and it depends on the drape and the whatever, whatever,” she joked. “They’re completely different but I love them both … You will understand that when you see the one that I pick.”

And forget triple Spanx and starving herself: the star is all about having fun this year. “I’m never going to miss a meal!” Spencer said, laughing. “I think it’s about celebrating the journey, and I get to be at the biggest party … on a huge night. Are you kidding? There’s no pressure at all!”

Tell us: Are you excited to see Spencer’s gown tomorrow? Who else are you looking forward to seeing on the red carpet?

Glad she is enjoying herself.

Trinitey on

Kudos to her for not using under garment means or insane diets to squeeze into something that does not fit. I enjoy actors who become famous for their acting and not their appearance.

Sandra on

um and why does she think she needs to wear a muumuu to the Oscars?? strange

Danielle on

Octavia needs to fix her gap between her front teeth and she will be pleasant to look at .it’s something about your smile that needs to be complete. I stopped watching Michael Stratman on Kelly Rippa becauseof his teeth

tillie on

She is beautiful

Sue Jones on

What a sad world we live in.

Just Me on

Danielle, I guess nobody told Lauren Hutton or Anna Pacquin that a gap between their front teeth was unattractive…perhaps you better stage an emergency intervention or at the very least, a private meeting with their stylists.

Susie on

gaps between teeth are sometimes genetic! Im 17 and i have a gap between my front teeth and people say im beautiful.

Crick on

This woman spends more time talking about her weight than anybody else does.

Julie on

Anyone over a size 2 in Hollywood is considered fat. Octavia speaks for REAL women who aren’t of that minority. I admire her spunk.

Donna on

It’s easy to dress a size 0 actress, but a real designer can dress a more “traditionally built” woman whose physical assets deserve creativity & compliment. Hooray for Octavia for demanding more than the minimal efforts of stylists. Enjoy your big night & flash that smile – it’s part of what makes you beautiful! Looking forward to seeing your ensemble!

Denise on

She’s absolutely beautiful!

alessa2527 on

She looks like a normal lady of her age . It would be a plus if she works out, but she tries at least to look good without obsessing about it.

lilah on

Love Octavia Spencer’s attitude and acting. Wishing her continued success with her movie career!

Kat on

Go Octavia! What good is wealth if you can’t sit down and enjoy a proper meal?
Somebody like Angelina Jolie is just bones, you can count the veins on her arm, that’s not healthy at all.

Danielle
How shallow are you? It’s part of a persons personality having a space in their teeth. Duh…..I hope you have perfect teeth. To not watch a show because someone has a space in their front teeth…..you are just a sad human being.

Courtney on

she needs to say the designers name correctly it’s Miu Miu. @ Danielle when your as talented as Ms Spencer is a gap in your teath is almost unnoticable and the Co Host of Live with Kellys name is Michael Strahan not Stratman. look at Vivian Leigh and Joanne Woodward for starters both of them had/have a gap in their front teath and it never affected their careers 6 oscar nominations and 3 wins between them from 1940-1991 correct Vivian won both her nominations Gone With The Wind 1940 & Street Car Named Desire 1952 and Joanne won on her first nomination three Faces Of Eve 1958 and received 3 others Rachel Rachel 1969 Summer Wishes Winter Dreams 1974 and Mr & Mrs Bridge 1990

mferda on

I love that Courtney is correcting everyone’s spelling and spells teeth “teath.” Made my day!

Erika on

Um, @Courtney, she literally meant a muumuu. Not Miu Miu.

Life goes on on

Danielle, I find the gap endearing and her attitude is so great. But people like you are never happy, and while you mention Michael Strahan and Octavia both in a bad light, it must be the color of their skin you don’t like.

Lotus on

Maybe she talks about weight so much because she’s in an industry where she’s inundated with vanity and stress over her size! And to whoever would not like someone because they have gap, are you serious?! Why should they have to change a genetic trait to please some other imperfect person? Michael Strahan gave a point blank reason for why he CHOOSES to keep his gap and that’s his perrogative. Grow up.

Laurie on

Good for her! Every woman deserves to enjoy what they wear! The dresses she has worn are beautiful!

meredith on

good for her! classy lady. I’m sure she’ll look lovely

Shieroc on

She’s a pretty lady.

Cosia on

She doesn’t look that fat??? Oprah finds clothes, don’t know why she cant?

Tt on

Glad she is not trying to starve herself…. But you don’t have to starve yourself to be a healthy size. I like her, but making starving oneself relevant to being a healthy size is sending the wrong message.

Kari on

Haha!!! I love the comments more than the story. Danielle seems outright ignorant and Courtney made an ass out of herself with a pompous attitude (who doesn’t know how to spell teeth and know what a muumuu is?!?!)

lou on

She looks great in this picture…you go, girl!

Mary on

Octavia represents what most women look like. The average woman in the U.S is a size 14, not a size O or 2 like most Hollywood starts. For most of us who are not naturally thin, a size 0 is not attainable. I’m a size 22-24 and I’m fine with it. I dress nice and look good when I go out. And, I don’t have any health issues pertaining to my weight. Good for Octavia!

Fat america on

She looks great but that doesn’t give an excuse to the rest of American women who are obese. It’s one thing to be naturally built that way it’s another to be a size 20+. You might not have health issues now but the fact you carry around so much weight puts you at risk for a lot. No one is “naturally” a size 20+. Put down the cheeseburger

Sharon on

Trust and believe – she won’t be wearing a muumuu this year or any other year. I saw her on (I believe) The View last week. Looking good, girl. Looking real good!!
