Carrie Underwood’s Glowing Grammys Dress: All the Scoop

We can’t say we were surprised to see that Carrie Underwood had ditched her form-fitting Roberto Cavalli number for a princess-y silver gown to perform her song “Blown Away” at the Grammys Sunday night. When glowing paisley details began to unscroll across her full skirt, however? We definitely didn’t see that coming.

“We wanted it to be artful and dramatic,” Underwood told reporters backstage. “I just like to stand still and sing sometimes, so this seemed like the best way I could do that and still create something visually attention-capturing.” On the technology behind it, she was a little more tight-lipped, saying “I guess I probably shouldn’t tell my secret, should I?” — but luckily, we’ve already got the inside info.

To perform the song that won her best solo country performance, the superstar donned a custom Theia gown designed specifically for the vivid light show. The line’s creative director Don O’Neill sourced fabric for the 4 feet 5 inches-wide skirt that had to be approved by both Underwood’s stylist, Trish Townsend, as well as the video team creating the special effects.

With only three days to create the gown, O’Neill’s team worked around the clock, stitching together 10 yards of Duchesse satin, 100 yards of tulle and crinoline and thousands of Swarovski crystals onto the bodice. Meanwhile, the production team created the effects that were projected onto her gown, including sparkling stars, rose petals and butterflies.

And was all that work worth it? Judging by your overwhelmingly positive reactions on Twitter, absolutely. And O’Neill was thrilled with the result too, especially because he took the line’s name from the Greek goddess of light. “There couldn’t be a more perfect opportunity to fuse light in a literal sense with one of my gowns,” he says in a statement, “and have it showcased on a national stage by Carrie Underwood, the first celebrity to wear a Theia dress four years ago when we launched.”

Tell us: What did you think of Underwood’s high-tech couture?

looks like a big waste of money to me.

Guest on

Who wants to be a projector screen???

faith on

Everyone, everywhere has something negative to say. I say it was beautiful! Besides do we watch the Grammy Awards for their frugality? C’Mon.

Meg on

She actually sang Blown Away at the beginning, but when her dress was changing colors/patterns she was singing Two Black Cadillacs.

Nicole on

Shouldn’t the performance itself be enough to capture the audience’s attention? If you’re having to resort to flashy gimmicks, there’s not much hope for your continued success.

Shea on

Her purse holding husband was getting his butt kicked by the Chicago Blackhawks!!!!!!!!!!

brentage5000 on

I really don’t get the point of it, and her red carpet dress was better anyway

Mom2seven on

Love it! I don’t have a TV so of course I didn’t watch the performance but the costume is super creative!

Bob on

Meh

Jennifer on

I think the dress is unique….. carrie followed the network’s dress code unlike others.

kaemicha on

I loved that dress wi/o the embellishment, but when the dress started to take on different designs, it was memorizing: but a bit distracting from her singing.

VES on

Beautiful gown and a super talent wearing it!
I thank the designer for his great creation and so appreciated not seeing a cheap POS showing the person as basically nude!
Wish some of the others would have read the memo … if you have to bare your bod for attention on TV Award Show then there is something wrong with your talent!!
Beyonce looked like she was going cheap mall shopping and not sure what her sister thought she was doing!
Slip up the center on yellow dress looked like cheap hooker!
All these side slits are to high and not well done and stop trying to copy Jolie … it’s just not working for y’all!
The beaded bodysuit with the blue skirt with side slit to waist you blew it!
RiRi actually looked classy … loved the gown.
Loved Taylors gown and hair … seems like a few of the designers and stylist are going back to old hollywood … Thank Y’ALL!

Beautiful woman
Beautiful voice
Beautiful gown.
Didn”t need the “stuff”
Less is more

Laura on

I loved that dress so much! Carrie looke totally gorgeous!!!!!

deergirl on

me myself would of rathered see someone more deserving in that gown ,, though for a minute there while she was singing,, i thought maybe something was going to jump up and out from underneath her dress and run after the audience… So sorry .. But..not imprsssed.. Better luck next year maybe??

Hilary on

She looks beautiful and it was a very creative idea, I am sure the audience would have loved it.

Emma on

I really loved the gown and the beautiful light show created on it was what caught my eye. The butterflies were my favorite part! That was one of my favorite parts of the otherwise mostly boring Grammys.

Dee on

I don’t think Carrie Underwood resorted to a flashy performand (her dress) she has a voice that can carry over anythng and the dress was an added attraction, which by the way..can’t deny that it wasn’t enjoyed by everyone..such negative comments…

Becky on

Didn’t watch the show, so didn’t see the dress, but it sounds to ovee the top..Agree with Nicole, shouldn’t her signing have been enough entertainment?

Patty on

Her performance was the best. Loved the dress, the lights, the whole thing. She pulled the whole thing off. Love her. Most of all I love that she sings instead of all the yelling and screaming of some of the others. She was the highlight of the night to me. I am totally unimpressed with the yelling and screaming and jumping around like idiots. Carrie saved the night in my opinion.

TamB on

The light show with her gown is nothing new to her performances. She used this technology throughout her Play On concert tour.

TinTexas on

I think it was a cool idea !

Kim on

She’s a beautiful taleted young woman no matter what she wears, but I think it is a pretty clever idea! I’ve never seen that before, but I think it’s a safe bet you will see other stars doing it too.

Flarty on

She really should lose the pageant hair; it makes her seem older than she is.

joyce on

UGH !!!! Loose the rose dress. Very tacky.

Bev on

I liked it but Carrie doesn’t need all that. She’s a class act and to be honest the first design looked a bit like her digestive system which was a bit strange.

Bev on

I liked it but to be honest, with Carrie’s talent, she doesn’t need all that. The part I didn’t like was the first one because as it started to appear, it looked a bit like a human digestive system so was a bit off-putting. the rest were fine though.

Ashley on

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS JUST LIKE CARRIE!

scorpionglow on

It was gorgeous.

Skipp on

Reminds me of a Barbie doll my little girl plays with.. press a butten it plays music and it’s dress lights up. LOL

tracy on

I loved it very very creative, a masterpiece. I am a Carrie Underwood fan and I dont even like country music. But several stars are great, Taylor Swift, Leann Rimes, Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, excellent! Carrie is a country superstar. And im black and listen to pop, hip hop and reggae.
Honestly i dont see how anyone cannot love Carrie Underwoods light dress performance and speak negatively.

tracy on

Oh i also like Dolly Parton and Patsy Kline, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers

Juliea on

She could wear a flour sack and still be the most beautiful woman in the room.

TJ on

The dress and performance was totally awesome! It was very different and unique. I loved it!!!

Deb on

Awesome performance! The dress was great! Loved all the changing lights and Carrie’s vocals were spot on! Great and entertaining performance!

Pepper on

Over the top? By Hollywood standards – not really. Since when has any awards show been compared to a PTA meeting. My main complaint about the night was that those who ignored the dress code memo were allowed into the show anyway.

Darr247 on

Didn’t watch it. All the broadcast networks hire directors with the attention span of a gnat and when they show performances like that they change cameras every 1.5 seconds…guitar players starts a solo? they show the piano and bass players taking sips of water instead of the guitar player. So I just don’t watch anything on the broadcast networks anymore where they’ll be performing (90% of the time it’s lip syncing anyway).

linda on

She reminds me of barbie.

janice on

I use to think she was a pretty girl, but she’s looking more and more fake lately.

Deni Smith on

Interesting and unusual.

Marie Mullin on

Not a fan, Didnt even know what team her husband was playing, not too interested!!!

AnnieW on

JLo’s hair was atrocious. Whoever says you have beautiful flowing hair, but show me your BALD look. She may as well shave her head. YUCKO.

Jenny on

I love her energy so though the dress was pretty, I was disappointed….I thought she looked to stiff trying to hold still so she wouldn’t mess up the projection

AnnieW on

JLO looked totally BALD. What a disaster.

Diana on

She pretty much can out sing everyone there so she didn’t need to run around to get attention. Loved the dress, I thought it was a spin off on the Hunger Games – the flames on Katniss’ gown.

Tina on

I thought it was beautifully done. I had just walked into the room and the dress had a ‘still’ print on it and I thought “Oh, that’s pretty”. Then it bursted into something else, and I said “Wow, very cool.” And, it wasn’t just changing slides. It was moving to the music. Very pretty. Very unusual.

mikki on

Don’t understand this chick’s popularity. At all.

ProudAmericanWoman on

Looks like something from My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Sorry but very tacky & cheesy.

barb on

It was beautiful, just as her song and her voice was…Any negative people out there are jealous, always have to make negative comments, and who cares about those kind of people anyway :)

truth on

It was cool

KM on

When the pattern first began, it looked like ovaries.

Mary on

The song was “Two Black Cadillacs” NOT “Blown Away”!!!

guest on

what a waste of money, fabric and manpower. pathetic.

Guest on

Huge waste. Can’t stand the woman.

holly on

We all know that fashion comes with the talent at these ceremonies. Regardless of peoples thoughts on the dress, it was a first so now it’s a part of history. I expect it will be donated to a museum, maybe launching a high tech fashion exhibit.

Nan on

Even wearing that dress, her voice outshone it – what an amazing performance.

Aubrie on

Tacky, tacky, tacky,

Pinkdaisy on

Seemed kind of “circus like” to me. Just wear a great gown and sing with the talent you are known for. This was just tacky.

Misty on

Gorgeous dress, with or without the projections.

Lily on

I like Carrie Underwood, I love her songs about God, but I hate that there is a lot of yelling in her songs, its annoying! Kind of like Mariah and all her high notes they get tiresome after a while.

Debra on

She is always stylish and classy and it was very pretty at the same time

Margaret Curlee on

Her dress, itself, was outstanding! The color, the style, the hair were perfect! And then when the dress started to change color/design, it was amazing! Whoever thought of that visual should be commended! What a creative part of a great show! She is an terrific performer and I imagine she was excited when she heard the plans for the color/design change.

PB&J on

Looks like the same dresses I see on the show My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

Lynn on

Wow, I loved it. It was the coolest performance of the night. She is such an amazing singer and so pretty. Interesting technology. I bet there will be a lot of copying this by performers on tour.

Lola on

I thought she was beautiful. I love her voice and it definitely got everyone’s attention. Very creative!!!

Kim on

I thought it was beautiful and very unique! Especially at the end with all the butterflies.

mrsmass on

the idea seems very cheesy.

KI on

It really was visually interesting- and the performance was amazing (and entertaining). I find it hilarious that people (with probably 1/1000th of the creative talent of the people involved with the performance) are so negatively opinionated. It sure is easier to just sit back and tell everyone how bored and unimpressed you are, than to actually create something and put it out there. Just as well; go ahead, sit back, eat some more chips from your comfy couch and knock other people’s talent. ;-)

susan on

loved it

Sunny Powell on

I loved every second of Carrie’s performance. Carrie is the only reason I was watching in the first place. Her vocals were spot on last night and when the dress began to glow, I was enchanted by her singing and the dress. Thank you Carrie for a performance to remember.

Hawaii on

I love Carrie she is about the only young talent who can TRULY sing no lip sync no voice crackle just 100% real beautiful voice from day one… the dress and performance was tastefully done.

Jennifer on

I thought it was really cool and something different. At that point in the show I was starting to lose interest, so the effect came just in time. I really love those 2 songs and it was cool how they came together. There is always something interesting happening at the Grammy’s. It’s why most people watch it!

TomJ on

I am amazed at the negative comments. Such a beautiful presentation and unique designs should be applauded! As someone else stated, the Awrds show is a night of fantasy. If you want sad reality, go out the front door and walk up and down the streets. Wardrobes aren’t too lovely out there are they??

Life goes on on

It was gorgeous and unique, much better then too much skin all the time.

Lyn Lowe on

She found a way to dazzle the audience and kept it beautiful, dazzling, and unique. Quite a breath of fresh air considering what sometimes happens at these performances. Keep up your girl next door ways, Carrie, and, with your voice and sweet ways, you will always be loved.

Dawn Taylor on

I loved her dress, I thought that it was unique and cool! It was also very pretty!

Regina Callahan on

I am sure all the negative comments are from Taylor Swift fans who can’t stand to see another singer get any praise, press, or awards. I am sure we will see a version of this dress and Carrie’s tornado that she has in her show somehow in one of Taylor’s concerts if it can be worked into her bizzarre circus concert!

Geena on

BEST innovation! It beat all the gaga’s tacky dresses to date. Carrie could afford to do it because she actually has the voice to compliment it. And the combined impact was powerful!
