Considering Bangs? Zooey Deschanel Has Something to Tell You First

02/06/2013 at 11:00 AM ET

With some hair trends, it’s best to ease your way into a new look (like if you’re drastically changing your hair color), but the same doesn’t apply to bangs, according to the queen of fringe, Zooey Deschanel.

The Pantene Repair & Protect spokeswoman sat down with PEOPLE to spill her secrets on getting and maintaining¬†the perfect bangs, and it turns out the key is to jump in with both feet. “Don’t get wispy bangs,” she says definitively in the above video. “Make sure you commit to them.”

Deschanel (who’s had bangs since she was two years old and never veered from the look!) says her current style of trim, which is heavy and dramatic, is “easy to manage.” But she’s quick to point out that heavy, non-wispy bangs don’t necessarily equal blunt bangs.”[Blunt bangs] are very difficult to style,” she says. If you’re going to go for face-framing fringe, she says, make sure to tell your hairdresser to “cut into them a little bit.”

Watch the above video to get more scoop Deschanel’s famed mane, plus hear her childhood haircut horror story and her (surprising) thoughts on going red. Tell us: If you don’t already have bangs, would you consider getting them? If you do have bangs, what’s your top styling tip?
