Three Things to Know About the Man Behind Beyoncé’s Super Bowl Look

After she sang the national anthem at a Super Bowl press conference on Thursday, Beyoncé asked, “Any questions?” Had the superstar asked the same thing after her incredible “not lip-synched” Super Bowl halftime performance Sunday night, we would have responded: “Just one: Who is responsible for that un-freaking-believable outfit?” The answer, it turns out, is not some household name couturier; it’s little-known designer Rubin Singer.

But we have a feeling Singer is about to become a household name thanks to the two looks he created for Beyoncé including a cropped moto jacket paired with a micro-mini wrap skirt made of nylon, metal, silk and plastic, which the star tore away mid-set to reveal a leather-and-lace bodysuit featuring python and iguana skin. (Oh yeah, and he also designed Michelle Williams’s killer getup and looks for the 120 backup dancers.)

Like most of the rest of the country, we can’t stop talking about what Singer created. So we did a little digging and uncovered three interesting tidbits about the designer. (Sorry, none of them are that he’s creating a diffusion line at Target … at least not yet!)

1. This wasn’t the first time he designed for Beyoncé.
Soon after launching his eponymous label in 2007, the 34-year-old met Beyoncé’s stylist, Ty Hunter. Since then he’s created several custom stage looks for the superstar. Most recently, he designed one of the sparkly bodysuits she wore for her New Year’s Eve concert in Las Vegas, and he was also responsible for the navy ball gown she donned for her July 4th performance in 2011, according to The New York Times.

2. He once worked for a big deal designer you’ve definitely heard of.
Singer is a third-generation couturier who lived in Russia and Paris before moving to New York, where he landed a gig as an associate designer for Oscar de la Renta. He was then named the head designer of three Bill Blass brands, and later he helmed the reins at Kai Milla, who has dressed Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

3. It took him more than 200 hours to create the Super Bowl halftime looks.
Back in November, Singer pitched Beyoncé’s stylists, Hunter and Raquel Smith, ideas from his fall 2013 collection, entitled, “Valkyrie’s Dominion.” The designs, inspired by a powerful female figure in mythology, fit perfectly with Beyoncé’s vision for the big show. So in early December the designer and his team of 14 began working on the pieces. More than 200 hours, two months and five fittings later, the jaw-dropping designs were finally complete.

But what about those awesome ankle boots? I loved them! Where are they from??

Marianna on

Absolutely loved Beyoncé’s look. She looked stunning and sexy. The outfit really fit the show perfectly.

Cate on

Look at that outfit. I admire her singing ability, but what she wore made her look like a tramp. Would it have killed her to wear a skirt — even a mini?

RJones on

Oh for the love of God!!! ENOUGH WITH THE BEYOTCH’S STORIES!!

cookie on

@Cate,don’t get it twisted, she’s not Taylor Swift. She has an adult following, and yes she flaunts her sexuality. If you got it flaunt it.This was the half time show of the Super Bowl not a Sunday school recital..Loved the outfit, and I’m a 50 something, heterosexual female.

RaeJ on

So much for family friendly. I am so sick of these women performers wearing nothing more than lingerie while they do pole dancing routines around the stage.

Carly on

Fat hooker.

richille on

I didn’t hear a lot of singing, she did a lot of dancing & talking to make everybody knows she’s not doing lip synch

GildaGirl on

The only accessory missing from her outfit was a striper’s pole.

Danielle on

Her outfit and moves were not for a family hour, but she did what she knows best, and it’s not singing, thank God for the Destiny Girls , they save the situation and so was Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson.

Lilian on

Nice look n great performance. There is really nothing extra ordinary about the outfit but good though

jenn on

all she was missing was the pole

Diamarija on

Nothing really wrong with anything. But I wasn’t swept off my feet. Not a new creation, rather a collage of her work. The stage was brilliant thou.

summer on

hhmm…..maybe he could get her some clothes in HER size??? Sorry, but I really do think she has “too many curves” to wear an outfit like this AND look (at least) decent

Patricia Fields on

You people need to get a life! I am almost 70 years old and I think that her costume and dancing was awesome! I don’t care for her style of music but I know that she has an awesome voice…watch “Dreamgirls” one of these days.

Cate on

@Patricia — We have lives. Many of us also have small children, and we don’t want them to see a woman on a stage dressed like a hooker. During the SUPER BOWL, which some families watch together. I don’t care what she wears during her personal concerts or other performances.

Patrice on

The whip look…out for hire.

Deb on

The outfit was quite appropriate for a woman to wear in the privacy of her own bedroom, but it was just a bit too little/much to air on television during the family viewing hour.

Pamela on

I just don’t think it’s that original. Versions of that look have been around for decades, usually on the Strip. Epic fail!

derft on

have her prance around to detract from her voice which is just ok – alisha and jennifer are such better singers than Beyotch.. She did NOT bear that baby!!!!

Salina on

@monica The Booties are Proenza Schouler

Paulette on

Beyonce’ obviously doesn’t know what a family show is and that kids watching were not in a strip joint, WHICH, is exactly where she must have thought she was performing. It is sad that performers have sunk so low to think they must perform sexual acts while singing!

Holly on

Small children shouldn’t have been up during the half time performance. They should be in bed by 8.

Paulette on

Beyonce doesn’t know what a family show is or she wouldn’t have looked like a tramp performing in a strip joint looking like she was having sex on stage. Really sad, I thought she was supposed to be a better person that what she showed.

Holly on

so according to some, Beyoncé’s outfit was in appropriate, but the football players crushing and head-butting and not to mention the fighting is perfect for family TV? Give me a break.

MRT on

She was beautiful last night! I love her outfit! The designer and his team did a great JOB!

Kari on

Gorgeous, thunder thighs.

kk on

i think its more about the body
if u put this into someone whos not got the body its gonna be normal, and not a killer

JeanE on

She looked like a total streetwalker and it was absolutely inappropriate when there were younger kids watching! It was embarassing and she looked like she was going to hump herself right off the stage. Bad, bad choice for a show.

halle on

OMG….so sick and tired of people whining about it wasn’t ‘family oriented.’ What on TV is anymore? There are shows on Disney that make you double check the station you’re watching. People please I’ll bet your kids aren’t as naive as you think they are. Some of your sons/daughters have probably had more partners than you want to know about.

chuck on

Outfit looked like a black hooker, face looked uptight, scared. Her dancing took the focus off her mediocre singing. As ususal she HAD to be the big star-DC should have had more stage time-that is what the public wanted. Lots of smoke and mirrors (ALWAYS PART OF HER SHOWS). Talent so-so, thats all.. She should pose for Penthouse and be done with it.-Musically I was not impressed-she was selling sex-nothing more.

JeanE on

My son is 12 and he doesn’t have any “partners”, it was pathetic to see her pumping and gyrating while wearing a leather S&M costume…plus, she can’t sing, Jennifer Hudson was 100% better and classy with the Sandy Hook chorus. Next year, rather see a group that sings, and plays instruments with clean songs like Bon Jovi. Just another ridiculous overproduced 1/2 time show in that wart of a stadium.

move on on

SOOOOO VERY TIRED OF BEYONCE SHAKING HER BOOTY WEARING BARELY NOTHIN’!! NO CLASS AT ALL!! AND THE SB PERFORMANCE WAS A YAWN FEST…..JUST MORE OF WHAT WE ALWAYS SEE FROM HER….BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, DON’T WANT THE T SHIRT!! (ALTHOUGH SHE COULD HAVE WORN ONE TO COVER UP SOME :| !!

Hillary on

Holly, the game started at 3:30pm Pacific time, so half time was at about 5ish. My nephew was up at that time, so on the East coast it might of been late, but not everywhere.

ene on

No matter what Beyonce dress look like,or how she sings people are still gonna complain.u must not watch her shows if u don’t want to,so give her a break

deborah scofield on

I am a heavier person and take pride in that I don’t wear close that just wouldn’t look good on me. Her thighs stood out in that outfit and it was not family -friendly attire. I keep hearing how it was one of the best half-time performances ever, but I am sorry, maybe to a certain population, bu NO!

Cate on

@Holly — We’re not on EST, so yes, our kids were still awake. Your views represent much of what is wrong with society today, and why it has gone to h***.

Marie Mullin on

Yuck don’t wear a bathing suit toerform

Marie on

Her Outfit would have be great on a dominatrix in a dungeon, not a family half time show! Really, I don’t need to see that unless I want to and not forced to. Not Impressed at all about that so called “half time show”

Becky on

I’d say that outfit came from Hookers r Us.. It was apretty outfit, but not for anywhere other than your bedroom..

joyful on

i guess she got that brazilian.

lawanda on

What’s Up with all the haterA$$** comments, Come on Ladies wheres the GIRL POWER. Luv Ya B

Cyndi on

I think Beyonce is a beautiful woman – and she can sing….her concerts must be a lot of fun. HOWEVER, I was disappointed that she chose such a skimpy outfit and used sexual gestures while singing – how low do these talented women need to sink? Who is telling them that this is necessary? Of course perhaps grown men? but even grown men probably secretly thought “am I in a strip club or watching the Superbowl?” Beyonce – lost opportunity to really shine as a confident woman with talent!! focus on talent – not sex. That’s the point.

Zack on

I guess a lot of you parents don’t take your kids to beaches or pools if you think her one piece was to inappropriate…sheesh what did you think she was going to wear? She is Beyonce, not Barbra Streisand !

moni on

One woman is talented, beautiful, confident, and sexy and the insecure women go straight into attack mode. You guys sound pathetic and sad.
