Three Things to Know About the Man Behind Beyoncé’s Super Bowl Look

After she sang the national anthem at a Super Bowl press conference on Thursday, Beyoncé asked, “Any questions?” Had the superstar asked the same thing after her incredible “not lip-synched” Super Bowl halftime performance Sunday night, we would have responded: “Just one: Who is responsible for that un-freaking-believable outfit?” The answer, it turns out, is not some household name couturier; it’s little-known designer Rubin Singer.

But we have a feeling Singer is about to become a household name thanks to the two looks he created for Beyoncé including a cropped moto jacket paired with a micro-mini wrap skirt made of nylon, metal, silk and plastic, which the star tore away mid-set to reveal a leather-and-lace bodysuit featuring python and iguana skin. (Oh yeah, and he also designed Michelle Williams’s killer getup and looks for the 120 backup dancers.)

Like most of the rest of the country, we can’t stop talking about what Singer created. So we did a little digging and uncovered three interesting tidbits about the designer. (Sorry, none of them are that he’s creating a diffusion line at Target … at least not yet!)

1. This wasn’t the first time he designed for Beyoncé.
Soon after launching his eponymous label in 2007, the 34-year-old met Beyoncé’s stylist, Ty Hunter. Since then he’s created several custom stage looks for the superstar. Most recently, he designed one of the sparkly bodysuits she wore for her New Year’s Eve concert in Las Vegas, and he was also responsible for the navy ball gown she donned for her July 4th performance in 2011, according to The New York Times.

2. He once worked for a big deal designer you’ve definitely heard of.
Singer is a third-generation couturier who lived in Russia and Paris before moving to New York, where he landed a gig as an associate designer for Oscar de la Renta. He was then named the head designer of three Bill Blass brands, and later he helmed the reins at Kai Milla, who has dressed Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

3. It took him more than 200 hours to create the Super Bowl halftime looks.
Back in November, Singer pitched Beyoncé’s stylists, Hunter and Raquel Smith, ideas from his fall 2013 collection, entitled, “Valkyrie’s Dominion.” The designs, inspired by a powerful female figure in mythology, fit perfectly with Beyoncé’s vision for the big show. So in early December the designer and his team of 14 began working on the pieces. More than 200 hours, two months and five fittings later, the jaw-dropping designs were finally complete.

Beyonce’ obviously doesn’t know what a family show is and that kids watching were not in a strip joint, WHICH, is exactly where she must have thought she was performing. It is sad that performers have sunk so low to think they must perform sexual acts while singing!

Small children shouldn’t have been up during the half time performance. They should be in bed by 8.

Beyonce doesn’t know what a family show is or she wouldn’t have looked like a tramp performing in a strip joint looking like she was having sex on stage. Really sad, I thought she was supposed to be a better person that what she showed.

so according to some, Beyoncé’s outfit was in appropriate, but the football players crushing and head-butting and not to mention the fighting is perfect for family TV? Give me a break.

i think its more about the body
if u put this into someone whos not got the body its gonna be normal, and not a killer

She looked like a total streetwalker and it was absolutely inappropriate when there were younger kids watching! It was embarassing and she looked like she was going to hump herself right off the stage. Bad, bad choice for a show.

OMG….so sick and tired of people whining about it wasn’t ‘family oriented.’ What on TV is anymore? There are shows on Disney that make you double check the station you’re watching. People please I’ll bet your kids aren’t as naive as you think they are. Some of your sons/daughters have probably had more partners than you want to know about.
