It’s a big week for Michelle Obama: she turns 49 today, joined Twitter this morning and will stand by as her husband is sworn in to his second presidential term on Monday. (And here we thought our weeks were busy …)

Though we’ve been captivated by many of Mrs. O’s past dresses, we’re quite excited to see what she wears for Monday’s Inauguration and parties. According to WWD, the First Lady’s staff reached out to several different designers for samples and ideas — Derek Lam, Marchesa, Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, Tory Burch, Tracy Reese, Narciso Rodriguez, Naeem Khan, Thakoon and Jason Wu among them.

WWD also asked several designers to create dream dress sketches for the First Lady and her fashion-forward daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11. Some of our favorites include L’Wren Scott’s belted, lace-topped blue gown (left), Nicole Miller’s stunning strapless red dress, with youthful, complementary blue frocks for the girls (below), Lela Rose’s pretty purple gown and Monique Lhuillier’s seafoam creation.

For the 2009 Inauguration, Obama selected a white one-shoulder dress by then-newbie Jason Wu; her stunning style moment instantly put the young designer on the map.

The dress was “a masterpiece,” the First Lady said one year after its debut. “It is simple, it’s elegant, and it comes from this brilliant young mind, someone who is living the American Dream.” No doubt her choice on Monday will be equally as beautiful — and important — as well. Tell us: How do you envision the First Lady looking on Inauguration day?

These comments are funny…no one had a problem when George W. Bush & his wife used our tax $ to outfit the entire clan including Jenna & Barbara. Nor did anyone complain about holding the “wasteful” inauguration ceremony when he was re-elected. I think it’s hypocritical to bash the president & his family just because your upset he’s a democrat and not a republican. Would it be any less wasteful if he held a different political stand?

Second term presidents shouldn’t have inaugural balls. It’s a big waste of money. I would love to see a president in my lifetime say no to an inaugural ball for his second term.

@ Cal; you ask, why is this newsworthy? You found it in the Style Section of People Magazine. What type of “News” do you expect to read about in this section?

Why should they have to cancel, no other president has ever had to. Get over yourselves. Going to be a great day.

How about a bag over this marxist’s head. Elitist wasteful scum living off tax dollars and expecting blacks to worship them. People better start waking up.

Since she had a one shoulder gown the last time, why can’t she cut off the one shoulder and make it a strapless gown? Save us some money.

Are you people serious ? The Obama’s cancel the only thing they are good at, partying with the rich? I get sick at the Americans that put this creep back in office! Oh and by the way the only way she could look good is for the bangs to cover her protuding chin!

I don’t know why it’s necessary to have a second inaugeration. In Canada where I live the Prime Minister is elected, has a small party, picks his cabinet, and is in office by the next week. And there is no public swearing in ceremony.
If he’s elected a second time, he just goes back to work the next day.
Just saying the american public can save a lot of $$ by not throwing these elabotate events!

PROBABLY WILL COST WHAT I MAKE IN A YEAR.
