Lena Dunham at ‘Girls’ Premiere: ‘I’m Not Wearing Underwear’

While everyone else is buzzing about what the four stars of Girls wore to the season two kickoff event, it was what creator Lena Dunham didn’t wear that has us in the PEOPLE offices talking.

The actress arrived in a strapless Valentino jumpsuit and quickly divulged some very personal info: “I’m not wearing underwear,” Dunham told reporters at the premiere, hosted by HBO with The Cinema Society, in N.Y.C. on Wednesday night. Dunham called the move “liberating.”

But in Dunham’s opinion, hitting a red carpet without undergarments was only the second boldest decision she made. She shared that opting for a jumpsuit required quite a leap a faith. “I didn’t think I could get away with [wearing it] because jumpsuit seems like such a dirty word,” the actress joked. “But people are acting like it’s a normal thing to do, so I’m just rolling with it.” (Hmm, wonder if this gave her the idea.)

At the other end of the style spectrum was Allison Williams, who stunned in an embroidered gold top and a black knee-length skirt by Altuzarra, plus flawless makeup (we were so smitten that we tracked down all the details on it) and Fred Leighton drop earrings.

“They’re very old,” Williams said of the danglers. “I’ve asked for the whole story, because when I wear estate jewelry I love knowing the story behind it,” Williams told PEOPLE. So what exactly is the history of those stunning earrings? “I’m waiting on [it]!” she said.

New mom Jemima Kirke stepped out in something we could see her character, free-spirited Jessa, wearing on the HBO hit show: a one-of-a-kind vintage velvet dress by Geminola, a N.Y.C. label founded by her mother.

But perhaps the most surprising look of all was Zosia Mamet‘s. Not only did she select an above-the-knee black dress with a dramatic white neckline and ankle-strap pumps, a major departure from her typically low-key red carpet looks, but Mamet also lightened her locks! Wow! Except for the 2nd one, these are some unattractive ladies. They have a TV show?

Stef on

The third one looks like she’s attending a funeral in medieval times.

K on

This show is about real women in their twenties. Not everyone is perfect in real life.

Cosia on

LOL @ K these so called “real women” on the show are ridiculous caricatures. I watch the show as I AM in my 20s and they’re nothing like anyone I know ha. We pay our own way, don’t let our boyfriends basically rape us, have a plan for life, and aren’t completely self-indulgent

What was Valentino thinking???

I actually love Lena’s jumpsuit. And I think it’s great Zosia lightened her hair. It suits her.Jemima’s hair looks flawless.

Sorry Cosia, but your way of living as a 20 something year old isn’t always right. I’m in my 20s and I let a guy pay my way half the time. I also have no idea what I’m doing with my life other than attend college. Does that mean I’m doing it wrong? Sorry to tell you that not everyone lives the same way. This show portrays just one way of living, not the only way of living.

Pure talent….love this show!!!!!!!!

Can people please stop saying that this show is supposed to be about life for girls in their 20’s. I am twenty-four. I have watched the show on many occasions and have never found a character I could relate to. None of my friends are like this. Yes, the show is quirky and funny. It’s also an exaggeration and I do not really find it ground breaking at all.

rebecca on

i’m 27, and this show has definite similarities with my life/people I know. absolutely love the show.

Stef….

Your comment made me laugh out loud, literally…

allison williams looks like she has lost a lot of weight and i think lena dunham’s new haircut is more flattering on her.

Why is that considered “very personal”? I never wear underwear, ever. I hate it. I gave it up in my 20s (I’m in my 50s now). I don’t know why ANYone wears it. YUCK. If people weren’t so repressed they wouldn’t see it as salacious or prurient, it’s not a big deal. I don’t eschew underwear for sexual reasons. I just don’t like it! I know others who feel the same

Sara on

Isn’t this show just supposed to be the Anti-Sex and the City for hipsters?

Melissa on

She probably was wearing underwear and just wanted to make some laughs. She seems to like cheap laughs. I do not like her show. SATC showed what women really went through. I for one do not appreciate how she depicts women today on GIRLS. To each their own

JuneBug on

Yes, well Deni, the whole point of the show is to depict real 20-somethings living life in Brooklyn, rather than idealized, hyper-sexualized characters that are sad and generally uninteresting. The show is a big HBO hit and garnering lots of very positive attention. Get on board, darlin’, I’d guess you’re as hard on yourself as you are on complete strangers, but there’s always the hope of looking for the good in every situation.

whatever, guys. jemima kirke just had a baby. give her a break

Carrie M on

All I have to say is – I wish I were in my 20′s. Sigh………

elialula on

the comments on here really reflect People.com’s audience. not super intelligent, thoughtful or edgy… most of your run-of-the-mill woman without that much to say

Halley on

I absolutely love the show! I think Allison and Zosia looked amazing! I know Jemima just had a baby and all, but she is wearing the most fabric I have ever seen on a single dress.

Sammi on

Eww, you don’t need to tell us that. Most of the girls on this show? Woof.
