Shaun White Lops Off His Long Locks for Charity

Shaun White Haircut

From the wrong side of the law to the right side of his heart.

Olympic snowboarder Shaun White chopped off his famed long locks on Tuesday, donating several inches of his red hair to Locks of Love and documenting the process on camera.

“I’ve been thinking about this one for a while,” he says nervously in the video below. “But it’s for a good cause so I want to do it. Somebody needs it more than I do.”

After one last headbang, White, who jokes he’s “panicking” throughout the clip, lets his barber cut off his whole ponytail, then goes even shorter for the first time “in forever,” he shares.

After the shock wears off, though, White seems to be happy with his new ‘do. “I like it, it looks good,” he says. We’ll be interested to see if the star keeps his short hair — or grows it back out for the 2014 Olympics. Tell us: Do you prefer White with short or long hair?

Way to go, Shaun! You look great!

Sadie G on

It’s a win-win. Someone who needs it gets hair and he looks better. He seems like such a nice guy. This was a great thing to do. :)

its not even enough for locks of love it has to be a full 10 inches

anyonebutbrady on

There’s always one negative person that thinks they know it all…it doesn’t have to be 10 inches anymore, I recently made a donation that ended up being 16 inches, & they split it into two donations, one of the standard 10 & one of 6…I got thank you cards from both little girls that got wigs from my donations…

anyonebutbrady on

Not to mention the fact that he has curly hair & once they wash and straighten it, it very well could be 10 inches…

Doubt it on

The hair needs to be 10 inches long to donate and it looks like that isn’t even close.

Wow! Shaun looks fantastic! Long hair or short, I don’t think he can look anything but great. Honestly. Kudos to you, Shaun, for thinking of others, especially ones who have a rough go of it with treatments for their illnesses. And don’t worry, it IS only hair and will grow back…quicker than you think or expect.

Doubt it on

@anyonebutbrady I tried to donate just a year ago and the beautician said I couldn’t because it was only 8 inches. If you READ the rules on the official Locks of Love website, it clearly states the hair must be 10 inches. I have other friends that have tried too and were told it must be 10 inches. Not sure what your beautician planned to do with your 6 inches of hair… :/

Les on

Looks more mature with the new do.

Kitchy on

Nooooooooo. I loved his long hair, and it suited him perfectly. But yes, it’s for a wonderful cause and it’ll grow back, so it’s tough to be truly “upset” about it.

pixie on

He looks great both ways. And if he decides he misses it, I’m sure it’ll be back in a matter of months…nothing to worry about. ;)

Kitchy on

Doubt it must’ve missed that the 6 inches also made a wig that resulted in a thank you card. Yes, it can be less. They have a standard of ten inches, but they often use other lengths for either shorter wigs or “practice” wigs. Either way, his looks easily ten inches from above the pony tail holder to the tip of the hair, it’s just curled. He has big hands and a long face, which make it look shorter in comparison, but I can’t see how that hair wouldn’t qualify for a wig . I’ve worked at several St Baldrick’s events where the shaved hair goes to Locks of Love and his is almost definitely in the “donate” category.

Misty on

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO……..Now who am I supposed to have hair envy with?? I have loved his hair for as long as I can rememeber.

Kim on

Good for him. And he looks much better with short hair!

Fawn on

Finally!!!

Kim on

For those disagreeing about what length you can donate, this was taken DIRECTLY from the Locks of Love website;

Layered hair is acceptable if the longest layer is 10 inches.

Curly hair may be pulled straight to measure the minimum 10 inches.

Shorter hair will be separated from the ponytails and sold to offset the manufacturing costs. Although the shorter hair cannot be used in the hairpieces, it still greatly helps to reduce costs.

melissa on

Wow! Very handsome

Jacqueline on

I’ve always preferred short hair on men as opposed to long…I think it looks great! And the fact that he had it cut for such an awesome cause makes it even better. :-)

dancer92136 on

He looks amazing with this length hair. He should keep it. And he is obviously a great guy.

trannychasinmason on

he does know locks of love mostly donates fi independent wig makers and not cancer patients, right?

julie on

Awww-looks great and great cause.

Sun on

Wow.. He look like an adult now. At least his hair will grow again.

Jen on

Finally. He looked like a woman. Glad a child will benefit from this.

Doubt it on

You cut out this part Kim but thanks for posting that. Like I said above, it needs to be 10 inches.
“10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.”

Kerricatt on

Shaun looks fantastic now!! Way to go!

Didiwags on

No grow it back!!!

shannon on

I liked the long hair! But it will grow back and he did a nice thing.

bradygirl12 on

He’s got a nice face…he should keep it short.

Liz on

You look great Shaun! Great thing to donate Your hair. Maybe You can get through the airports with ease for a while now by not being recognized!

D on

LONG HAIR! I hate the look of men who are skinned or so short it looks like pubic hair. Give me the long hair anytime! Especially if their hair is beautiful and they are well groomed!

Nola on

Unfortunately they need at least ten inches from what I understand to be of any real use. I guess they could sell it.

Evan on

What’s with all the hate. There’s no problem with long hair I actually don’t like this…

Martha Burk on

I like both. The long style fit his younger age and the short style fits his age and sports star status. Looks pretty cool either way.

Linda on

Very cool video…

Cheryl Williams on

He would look good, any way he wanted ,as far as I`m concerned!

Fltatt88 on

You look Hot!! Next Super Model…

Lindsay on

His attractiveness level is now off the charts. I almost didn’t recognize him without his curly hair. It’s awesome that’s he’s doing it for a “good” cause (Locks of Love isn’t the best to donate hair to, I’ve donated hair multiple times) however, it looks just a tad too short which means it’ll probably just be thrown away :/
