Tabatha's Takeover: Anne Hathaway Makes a Fashion Faux Pas

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her stint on Shear Genius and her latest hit, Tabatha Takes Over. And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch once weekly to dish on some of the best – and worst – celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she takes on Anne Hathaway, who tried something a bit out of the box for a Les Misérables screening in New York City:

Dear Anne,

Hello there. I just want to take a moment and congratulate you on the release of your new film, Les Misérables. I am looking forward to seeing it.

The reason for my correspondence is I want to discuss with you your recent red carpet attire. In the past I have loved just about everything you’ve worn, but up until now I’m just not sure where your stylist is taking you. For instance, the frock you wore at your recent premiere just really missed the mark for me. It looked as if someone took a piping bag filled with buttercream frosting and made you stand still as they frosted your dress onto you. Not your best look I must say.

And then we have this dress that looks a bit like curtains from Liberace’s estate. To be honest, it is as if this dress is wearing you. The trim around the arms is confusing me. I don’t think the public has seen trim on a dress like this since Gone with the Wind. I will say that the belt was a nice attempt to make these drapes look more flattering, and the only thing this dress has going for it is the delicate neckline.

As for your hair and makeup, I love, love, love it as always.

Please know that I still have faith in your future looks because I have seen you appear stunning and striking in the past. Hoping your next red carpet appearance showcases your striking features and fabulous frame. I’m positive it will!

Tell us: Was Tabatha’s critique too harsh, or do you agree? Tell us in the comments!

Wow- you thought X-tina looked good but Anne missed the mark? Whoa!

I disagree. I love the dress and the overall styling. Very bohemian, daring, and it stands out. It looks fantastic on her, brings out her essence: carefree, spirited, but also dramatic, artistic, classy. I revere Tabatha but I think her sensibility is a bit too conservative at times. This look should be applauded– well done, whomever AH’s stylist is.

I think with such a masculine hairdo she needs some feminine detailing in her dress. I quite like the dress. I disagree with Tabatha this time.

as a fellow hairstylist, i must agree with tabitha, i dont even care for the neckline, yes gorgeous hair & makeup, anne is all around a beautiful women & should b dressed in something more flattering to her perfect figure & also keep the event into consideration.

Im wondering if critics realize that under the garments there is a person. Why must everything be so hateful. I was raised to filter my comments. If you don’t like the dress hair shoes, don’t comment at all. Why must we continue to hurt each other?

I agree that it’s quite bohemian and lovely. Just goes to show… if it’s not some classic chiffon gown that hugs ALL one’s curves, someone’s gotta knock it.

Heck, maybe Anne chose this herself. A stylist is an assistant when it comes to this sort of stuff, not the ultimate deciding force.

I think Anne is stunning. She looks happy, at peace, and not over the top like most actresses. Kudos Anne! Tabitha, keep your mean spirited opinions to yourself.

I love it, except the little balls hanging off the sleeves.

Brooke on

I think Anne looks stunning and chic in that gown.

What a waste of article space!

Go away, Tabatha. You are a no-namer, and this is a pathetic effort to change that. Yes, your attempt is that transparent. I really couldn’t care less what you think of Anne Hathaway, or any other celebrity for that matter. Your “1x article of fame” is over. Again, go away.

Yes… this coming from the woman who wears nothing but a black top and black pants every single day. Honey, go back to cutting hair and leave the style comments to people who know what they’re talking about.

Both this dress and Anne are beautiful, not sure what the problem is. She isn’t wearing a cookie cutter dress, it is very Bohemian and pretty. I hope People isn’t paying you to write articles since you obviously know nothing about fashion.

Tabitha is just jealous

While yes, Anne has been a rather hot mess lately…I really doubt she cares what Tabatha has to say!

Mary on

The dress is beautiful. I don’t know why you would be so critical.

i think Tabatha should just shut up. Anne looks great as always

jilly on

Anne looks gorgeous and I love the dress. I think Tabatha believes herself to be very clever and funny making fun of this dress but she was very wrong. Maybe she should put her glasses on and try again?

Joan on

Tabatha just has to have something to say to justify her job. SHE does not have to like everything another individual wears and should not lest her individuality escape her. This look is great. I agree with the other posts.

Tabatha probably would have gotten away with being harsh, had she discussed Anne’s hairdo. I respect her opinion when it comes to hair, but with fashion? Not so much. Next time, comment on the hair again, I can’t take these articles seriously.

I think she looks lovely. Lovely neckline and lovely dangling balls. Leave her alone. It is bad enough that everyone has an opinion about what she wears, there is no need to write a “personal letter” to her. Get over yourself.

erin on

I think it looks gorgeous on her. It doesn’t have to be skin tight to be attractive. go away Tabatha =(

I’m a hairstylist for 41 years now and I would say love the short hair but the overall fashion look is too old. Surprise- I don’t even look so much at ones hairstyle as much as ones teeth. If they aren’t pretty, doesn’t matter the hair or clothes!

Rocio on

Anne is beautiful, she looks beautiful, the dress look like a curtain, the trim on the sleeves are just used in curtains, I like and admire her, but I am not blind., plus she have a great taste, and this was an undeniable Faux pas. Now Tabatha,s critique was too harsh.

trix on

I just don’t like the color on her. She could of pulled it off better if the color was different.

Tori on

I think the dress looks great! Anne always manages to look chic. Tabitha, I am a journalist and I must say, your writing technique could use some improvement. I found myself believing a child could have written this article, not your best work.
