Exclusive: Lauren Conrad Dishes on Body Glitter, Scrunchies & Being a Redhead

10/12/2012 at 09:00 AM ET

Lauren Conrad might be the author of a beauty book and considered a style-setter, but the star admits she’s fallen victim to her fair share of bad trends.

“One of the worst ones was roll-on body glitter,” she says in PEOPLE’s exclusive video (above). “You would do it on your arms and on your cheeks. I remember doing it before soccer matches, which was really weird.” (Editor’s note: We’re guilty of doing the same thing. What were we thinking?!)

And of course, like every other girl in the ’90s, Conrad had an awesome scrunchie collection. “I liked to match [them] to my outfit and my bike shorts. I was quite the fashionista.”

But the most surprising thing the blonde once tried? Red locks. “I used to box-dye my hair. I had fire-engine red hair at one point … I looked like Ronald McDonald.”

It’s safe to say Conrad has come a long way since her days of body glitter, scrunchies and bad box dye jobs: She now has an adorably chic sense of personal style, she designs two clothing lines and her website LaurenConrad.com has become a super successful destination. Oh, and she’s also a New York Times bestselling author.

Which is why we’re psyched that Conrad followed up her style book with one focused on beauty. “So many times fans ask how to do something, or what tool or product to use, and there are so many tricks I’ve learned from amazing glam teams,” she tells PEOPLE about her inspiration to write her upcoming book, Lauren Conrad Beauty. “I felt this was a great way to share it all with girls who will really put the tips to good use.”

You’ll have to wait until Oct. 16 to read all of Conrad’s secrets and tricks, but we got the author to reveal her number-one piece of beauty advice, and it’s relatively simple: “Play up your positives and the features you love about yourself.”

Watch the above video to hear Conrad dish about other bad beauty trends she fell victim to in the past. And be sure to pick up Lauren Conrad Beauty when it hits shelves next Tuesday. You can also meet the author at one of her upcoming book signings. Tell us: Which one of Conrad’s bad beauty trends did you try when you were younger?

I have done all of the above except dying my hair a crazy color, though I did try to highlight my hair once and my hair came out way too blonde, which was not a good look. I had to dye it brown that same night to fix it.

“Play up your positives”…wow, that is some earth-shattering advice there. I’ve been doing it all wrong and underlining my negatives instead. It’s a good thing someone gave her a book deal!!

Well Eli, isn’t that the truth. You do seem like quite the negative person…maybe you should work on a positive attitude.

I see it as she is saying to not focus so much on the negative things you see in yourself. I think with society and everything it is easy to focus on the things you don’t like about yourself. But usually people have something they like about themselves and she is just saying to focus on that. Like I like my eyes. So I should play them up a bit. Not bad advice at all.

I am so with her on almost every horrific fashion choice she mentioned. Good lord LOL! And I actually usually like Lauren Conrad, but the one thing she said didn’t sound very nice to me. I understand you’re a celebrity now, and can afford a lot of luxuries, but to say box hair WAS a TREND, well that’s a rather thoughtless comment. I unfortunately started getting stray white hairs at a very young age, 19/20yrs old…. And now that I am 28, though I have really nice hair, a lot of my crown portion of my head is consisting of whites. Without box dye, I’d be miserable and adding a good many years to my age (look), prematurely! ;) I would LOVE to be able to afford the luxury of going to a salon every 3 weeks and dropping $130, but I’m not dripping in diamonds! My hair is a very deep brown and grows very fast so constantly has to be upkept. Can you imagine what that would cost? We’re talking about $1400 or more in a 6 month period. For some people, that’s a pipedream, whereas for me, box dye is a way of life. Facing the reality that I’m not made of money isn’t always fun, and I take a little bit of an offense that she would be laughing it at the insinuation that I would use such a product. It makes her sound very pompous!

Clearly, Jess, you have a bevy of first-world problems. Good luck with that.

I LOVE her for this interview! Lauren, girl, you are not alone! lol Be lucky you’re a few years younger than me, and escaped some of the more horrific trends that I made, lol. The 90’s were probably the WORST fashion decade, and we fell victim. Lucky for us, we discovered a way out! ;0) Love your lines & you’re one of the most stylish people I know! Love you!
