Carrie Underwood: Big Hair 'Makes the Rest of Me Look Smaller'

10/05/2012 at 09:00 AM ET

It’s a phrase Carrie Underwood is all too familiar with: ‘The higher the hair, the closer to God.’

“It makes me laugh, but it really is southern humor,” she tells PEOPLE. “We country folk, we like our big hair. I am certainly no exception.”

Though the singing star is often seen with pretty updos or cute curls, she also enjoys the occasional big (big) hair day. “I just feel like … maybe it makes the rest of me look smaller,” she jokes. “I’m not sure of my reasoning, but that’s the number-one thing I do, when someone fixes my hair, I put my fingers in it and make it look bigger.”

Underwood attributes her love of tall tresses to her native Oklahoma. “I mean for me, it was all about country women,” she says of her childhood style icons. “They like sparkles, they like big hair and they wear big hair. That was gorgeous to me and it still is.”

However, Underwood has modified her loud and proud southern look since landing in the spotlight. “I still feel like the same person, but sometimes I’ll look back at pictures of myself in college or in high school and I’ll say, ‘Oh my gosh, what was I thinking?!’” she shares. “But I’m sure 10 to 15 years from now I’ll look back to now and say, ‘Why would I wear that?’”

She does have a stylist to keep her in check, though. “We work together. She wants me to feel awesome and it’s more about not worrying about what other people have to say after the fact,” Underwood explains. “I always feel bad for people in magazines and on TV, where people [criticize] their look a little bit, because they walked out of their house feeling beautiful, and that’s the most important thing. So I really just try to wear what I love — and try not to think about who might or might not like it afterward.” Tell us: Do you like to pump up the volume on your hair? How do you do it?

How much smaller does she needs to feel? Like really? *rolling eyes* watever

Lynn on

I’m a southern lady, and we do love big hair! Carrie is gorgeous always!

Blondie on

Love Carrie but this comment is only adding to the problem of body image and what the definition of a “big woman or man” might be. Carrie is NOT big and even if she was “big” this comments shows a lot of insecurity. We all need to embrace who we are and accept our differences.

guest on

you all are over reacting to the comment.

Li on

She was kidding people. Don’t take everything so seriously. Learn to take a joke and stop criticizing every single thing someone says.

Sheri on

I met Carrie Underwood,me standing beside her made it look like 01 lol. When she walked into the room every person said wow followed by she is a tiny cute thing lol.If she wants to have a big hair day to make her feel smaller go for it just like on days I want to feel skinny I go stand beside someone who is fatter then me lmao.

ElenaApple on

I don’t understand why she wants to be smaller! She is too small as it is!

BBB on

hahaha my initial reaction was the same as many of you, “how can she possibly look smaller?”

Ty on

Maybe it is working and in real life she is not all that small ;)

Lowry on

For those of you up in arms about her comment… RELAX. The quote from above reads, “I just feel like … maybe it makes the rest of me look smaller,” she JOKES. Key word here is ‘jokes’.

Josh on

Get a grip, folks. The only ones who are offended are the ones who are choosing to put her words under a microscope, yet can’t recognize the meaning of the word JOKE.

Rachel on

They really thought her big hair comment was worthy of an article??…. Dumb.

Jennifer on

Carrie was the cutest when she was on American Idol. She was a typical southern Oklahoma cutie.

Deb on

What a contrast between her face and her neck…I can’t believe all that makeup caked on is good for her complexion!

Linda on

She is a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice.

Brooklyn on

Puhleese, yes Carrie you are so big, you need big hair to make you look smaller…what a dumb comment, whatever!

Kris on

Tastefully done “big hair” can sometimes look better on certain women than some of the flatter, sleeker styles of the last ten years. Certain women (I am one of them) have larger faces due to bone structure, or maybe bust size, (not due to being overweight) and certain bigger-haired styles can elevate, much like heels, or a sleek line in clothing, etc.

Konaque on

She’s been processed, packaged and stamped. Blah!

Tara on

Honey Ive stood next to you, if you were any smaller youd just about disappear!!!

tina on

YES, WE GIRLS LOVE BIG HAIR. LOVE CARRIE TO.

Meg on

i agree patrice! carrie is clearly obsessed with being as skinny as humanly possibly. too bad country music is so sexist-wanting women to be as small as possible-and therefore as insignificant as possible-

Rain on

Love her!!! She is gorgeous and classy but still youthful and fun. Some of you people with your comments need to loosen up and not be so literal when you read.

Tara on

I dont think shes obsessed with being SKINNY- I think shes obsessed with being healthy- she works out, she eats a vegan diet, yes shes tiny but shes also pretty short and having seen her up close and personal, shes not scary, bony skinny, shes just thin and petite. She doesnt look ill, her hair is healthy, its not like shes anorexic or anything. Shes absolutely beautiful, and is sweet as can be. Ive had the pleasure of meeting her a couple times, and seeing her hot hubby too, I love them. Normal as you and I, just dont have to worry about how much a pair of shoes cost like the majority of us.

carolinagirl on

Carrie is gorgeous and talented. The higher the hair the better!!! Love it!!!

Ashley on

When she’s heavier, Carrie Underwood looks like Bridget Marquardt of the Girls Next Door.

anonymous on

wow its a shame carrie has joined the im too fat crowd when shes what a size 0?????????????? welcome to hollywood shes definitely changed, this is not a role model to young girls

SusiQ on

Carrie is gorgeous no matter how she wears her hair or the clothes she chooses. And the key word is “she” chooses; articles like this just encourage others to be mean.

allangr on

You know it is really sad that a lot of People do not Read and understand an article before they respond, and make themselves look foolish,Carrie underwood is most likley one of the most Fit Celebrities of today, she is a perfect weight, perfect size and works hard to maintain a Healthy Diet and Life Style!!!!

susan on

love big 1980′s hair..it took me 25 years to leave it behind and move into the 2000′s, now your telling me it’s back!! where’s my teasing comb? :)

Jessica on

Carrie looks smaller because she is tiny because of a healthy exercise program and eating habits. When Adele (whom I love) finds a way to “look smaller” that works, I’ll read all about with baited breath.
