Red Carpet Trend Report: What's Sizzling & What's Fizzling

It looks like it’s going to be a rather covered-up red carpet season — at least if this week’s looks are any indication. See what we mean by reading up on the two trends on the rise and the one on its way out.
Up: Three-quarter length sleeves: We’re used to seeing strapless gowns and the occasional long-sleeve dress at awards shows and premieres, but Taylor Swift, Ginnifer Goodwin and Demi Lovato all proved that the in-between sleeve length isn’t just for baseball tees; it’s actually red carpet-appropriate. It’s also a nice way to counter the sexiness of a super-short mini.
Up: Turtlenecks: When’s the last time you wore a turtleneck? Yeah, we thought so. But according to Nina Dobrev, Cate Blanchett and Anna Kendrick, the ’90s soccer mom staple is back, this time in the form of dresses. Dobrev keeps her high-neck look youthful thanks to the open back and high hemline on her embroidered Zuhair Murad creation.
Down: Undie-baring dresses: Sheer skirts, shirts and dresses were one of the biggest trends of the summer. And though stars are still donning the revealing fabric, fewer and fewer ladies are going as over-the-top as Krysten Ritter did. She wore black underwear with a sheer-skirted red Dior dress, and we’re guessing she’s one of the last to sport such a sexy summery look.
