After receiving quite a bit of negative attention for her recent weight gain (she put on 25 pounds), Lady Gaga took to her social media website,, to respond — and to reveal a painful secret.

On Tuesday, Gaga posted a photo (left) of herself wearing nothing but a yellow bra and underwear, along with this caption: “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15.” With the picture, she announced the launch of a new movement, “A Body Revolution 2013,” meant to encourage body acceptance.

The singer added a second shot with her arms stretched in the air saying, “But today I join the BODY REVOLUTION.” Two more photos, in which Gaga shows off her backside, are also included in the post with the captions, “To inspire bravery” and “BREED some m$therf*cking COMPASSION.”

On her site, Gaga explains that the inspiration behind the movement stemmed from the Born This Way Foundation, an organization she started with her mother to stop bullying and embrace individuality. “This profile is an extension of that dream,” she wrote. “Be brave and celebrate with us your ‘perceived flaws,’ as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous.”

Unsurprisingly, the Mother Monster’s positive message resonated with her Little Monsters. Soon after the post went up, fans began flooding the website with photos of themselves in their underwear and sharing their own personal struggles with body image issues.

“I have been startled and overwhelmed with pride and emotion the past few days. Gratitude mostly,” Gaga wrote in a letter to her fans, thanking them for their outpouring of support for her cause. “You are proud to be born this way, and brave in your vulnerability with this community. Watching you all create a safe space online for people to be compassionate is the greatest gift you could ever give me.” Tell us: What do you think of Gaga’s Body Revolution? Do you think that this was the right way to respond to the haters?

She’s always a true beauty & not afraid to be real that’s why us fans love her (even us older ones)! Excellent role model!

this isn’t about weight gain…she only gained a few pounds.
She just wants more attention and reasons to publicly LOVE herself.
A p.r. stunt to gain more women fans. Give me a break. I don’t even believe she necessarily has these eating disorders. She just put on (a little) weight and they came up with a scheme to get her compassion and gain a female fan base.

She is so obsessed with herself.

While most of us think she looks healthy and good, we have to remember for someone suffering an eating disorder this is probably not how she views herself, and may even be feeling shame or failure for not keeping under this healthy weight.

I don’t follow her much, but she must have been really thin before if she was 25 lbs lighter. I think she looks fine and not at all overweight. She looks normal and healthy!

Seriously, this woman will do anything for publicity! She is not even fat, at least not in these photos. What is the point to all of this? While she’s TRYING to be a role model for young girls, she’s also running around wearing raw meat & smoking weed on stage. Not impressed. Her “cause” seems to change every year, depending on what will get her the most attention. She needs to focus on her music and stop acting like a hero without a clue!

If you need to justify your actions to anyone you clearly have a problem and lack of confidence

Either go on a diet or be content to be chubby, the choice is yours
no one cares

Thanks Gaga,,,not a fan but I appreciate your truthfulness.,,this is why you are respected. As a mom who recently gave birth and is still trying to lose baby weight while suffering from self conscience body image, I feel empowered by reading about your recent weight gain. It shows that you are human and so am I.

In my opinion, 90% of the world’s population is at least 20 lbs overweight. That to me is more common than being a celebrity who’s 15lbs under the average weight, only so they can look good on camera. I think Gaga looks great. And in that respect only she needs to please herself…and no one else.

Those of you who are ignorant about eating disorders have no idea how huge it is for a person who has struggled with one to post a picture like this. Gaga does do a lot of things for publicity..but this is one time that i do no feel that the desire publicity was for her..but rather for the issue of eating disorders!! I respect her because she is making a statement on behalf of all the young men and women who suffer from eating disorders. Comments and criticism about someone’s body have a deeper impact than most people realize, especially when they are directed to someone with an eating disorder. Kudos to Gaga for fighting back and not allowing the criticism to make her retreat back into symptoms of her disorder.
