After receiving quite a bit of negative attention for her recent weight gain (she put on 25 pounds), Lady Gaga took to her social media website,, to respond — and to reveal a painful secret.

On Tuesday, Gaga posted a photo (left) of herself wearing nothing but a yellow bra and underwear, along with this caption: “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15.” With the picture, she announced the launch of a new movement, “A Body Revolution 2013,” meant to encourage body acceptance.

The singer added a second shot with her arms stretched in the air saying, “But today I join the BODY REVOLUTION.” Two more photos, in which Gaga shows off her backside, are also included in the post with the captions, “To inspire bravery” and “BREED some m$therf*cking COMPASSION.”

On her site, Gaga explains that the inspiration behind the movement stemmed from the Born This Way Foundation, an organization she started with her mother to stop bullying and embrace individuality. “This profile is an extension of that dream,” she wrote. “Be brave and celebrate with us your ‘perceived flaws,’ as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous.”

Unsurprisingly, the Mother Monster’s positive message resonated with her Little Monsters. Soon after the post went up, fans began flooding the website with photos of themselves in their underwear and sharing their own personal struggles with body image issues.

“I have been startled and overwhelmed with pride and emotion the past few days. Gratitude mostly,” Gaga wrote in a letter to her fans, thanking them for their outpouring of support for her cause. “You are proud to be born this way, and brave in your vulnerability with this community. Watching you all create a safe space online for people to be compassionate is the greatest gift you could ever give me.” Tell us: What do you think of Gaga’s Body Revolution? Do you think that this was the right way to respond to the haters?

Really? You people who are saying negative things should go into your home and take a look in the mirror. Are you perfect? Do you wear a size 3? Do you have acne? Do you drink too much, sleep around, have horrible kids or a bad marriage? Oh, not so perfect, are you. Stop judging her for posting this picture. It’s empowering. She could have just done a whole Playboy spread like other women do and then what would you have said.

@ Leslie – So a celebrity can’t promote a good cause without wanting more publicity? I’m pretty she Lady Gaga doesn’t need it at this point. If she didn’t get involved in anything then your next critic would be – ‘with such a big name, she should be helping out the community’. You’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t. I personally don’t suffer from body image issues but have friends that do and I think it’s great that Lady Gaga is putting this out there & relating & encouraging her fans.

STOP THE MADNESS!!! I get what she’s saying! Enough all you ignorant people. Obviously she has NO issues as she looks great. What is wrong with our world today??!! We’ve really gone off the deep end and it is scary. No wonder there is so much drug use.

I think standing up against media madness is fantastic. Eating disorders are a product of magazines and television, yes even People. Wouldn’t it be nice if we were all flawless? But we’re not. Everyone is shaped differently. And as a celebrity you really just can’t win, can you? You’re too thin, you’re too fat, you’re too this, you’re too that. Nothing makes me cringe more than reading hate comments. So you don’t like her? Well, it’s probably because she’s living her life and you’re wasting yours by being frustrated and angry. C’est la vie.

Is this seriously the way she looks after GAINING 25 pounds?? If so, then I would say that she was waaaaay too thin before. Just goes to show the tremendous pressure on female celebrities to maintain unrealistic weights. What I hope though is that she doesn’t starve herself to go back to the way it was. You see that a lot with female celebrities. They gain weight, they come out with a statement saying how proud they are of their body and curves, and then three months later you see them in a swimsuit on the cover of a magazine announcing that they just lost a lot of weight. I hope Gaga doesn’t go that route. She looks great now!

That’s fat? We live in a sad world.
