Red Carpet Trend Report: What's Sizzling and What's Fizzling

While designers were showcasing their spring 2013 collections at New York Fashion Week, the stars were stepping out on the red carpet in fall’s hottest looks. Here are two trends we want to see more of, plus one style we’re ready to retire this week:
Down: Asymmetrical hemlines: Short in the front, long in the back dresses were everywhere this summer, but the breezy style just doesn’t feel right on a formal satin dress like Salma Hayek‘s. You can still wear high-low hemlines, just save them for a more casual setting.
Up: Sexy evening pantsuits: Menswear-inspired looks such as boyfriend blazers and jeans have been big for a while, but now the trend is ready to party. Kate Hudson wore a sleek white Alexander McQueen pantsuit with black detailing on the lapel and leg paired with a lace Cosabella camisole to Wednesday night’s Glee premiere. And other fashionistas — including Elle Fanning, Halle Berry and Naomi Watts – seem to be following suit (literally).
Up: Racy side cleavage: Jaime King‘s citrus sheath would be pretty demure if it weren’t for that eye-catching flash of skin. It’s an unexpected way to do sexy, but if you try the trend, you should pick up some double-sided tape to prevent a wardrobe malfunction.
