Update: Mini Makeup Maven Talia Castellano Becomes an Honorary CoverGirl
The freshest face to represent the cosmetics brand, however, isn’t a leading lady you’ve seen on the big screen or on the stage. But maybe she’s inspired you — either to switch up your eye shadow routine, or even just smile.
Remember Talia Castellano, the 13-year-old from Florida battling two forms of cancer with a full face of makeup on (and a YouTube page detailing the natural beauty’s favorite tips and tricks)? Now an honorary CoverGirl, the preteen was crowned with her own brand portrait by idol DeGeneres on her talk show Thursday.
“How do you stay so positive?” DeGeneres asked Talia, whose cancer treatment options, including a bone marrow transplant, are running low.
“When people ask me that, I’m just, ‘What do you want me to do? Be depressed?” said Talia, who’s back from a summer at Sunrise Day Camp, a program dedicated to children with cancer.
In a nod to 2003’s animated Disney flick Finding Nemo, she quoted the sea’s resident optimist, Dory, voiced by DeGeneres: “A little fishy told me, ‘Just keep swimming.'”
CoverGirl also gifted Talia a makeup table, stocked with the brand’s must-haves, and $20,000.
“I’ve always been a really bubbly girl, and my mom always tells me to think about the positive,” Talia, who was diagnosed nearly six years ago, told PEOPLE last month. “Even though cancer is a negative, horrible thing, there are positives. For people to see that there are kids that get cancer … it’s just a true fact. Me putting a face on it makes a difference.”
