Katie Holmes ‘Isn’t Afraid to Fail’ in Fashion

In an exclusive interview published today in WWD, Katie Holmes announces her next move: her first-ever cosmetics deal. It’s a big boon for the actress, who split from husband Tom Cruise in late June.

As the brand’s first celebrity face, Holmes will begin appearing in Bobbi Brown’s ad campaign next spring. By the following fall (2013), her name will appear on a capsule collection of color cosmetics. The multi-year partnership, according to WWD, is estimated to be worth between $2 million and $3 million.

The deal came about just two months ago, after Holmes and Brown were introduced by a mutual friend. “We bonded,” Brown tells WWD. “And then it was, ‘Oh my God, you would be the perfect face for Bobbi.’ We weren’t looking for a celebrity, just a cool, amazing woman who would fit with our brand. And she’s just ridiculously naturally beautiful.”

“This is my first foray into beauty products and the evolution of a look,” says Holmes, who shares an easygoing style philosophy (and Midwest upbringing) with Brown, who made her name with her clean, easy-to-use products.

The beauty contract marks another step for Holmes as she builds her résumé in the fashion and style industry. Next up, she’ll present her ready-to-wear line, Holmes & Yang, on Sept. 12 at Lincoln Center in one of the most buzzed-about shows of the season. And not surprisingly, Brown will be doing the makeup for the presentation.

While she’s excited, Holmes admits she’s still learning the ropes of Fashion Avenue — especially when visiting store buyers for the first time.

“When you go in and you show your clothing, you think that they’re going to buy the whole collection,” she tells WWD with a laugh. “And when they don’t, you’re like, ‘What do you mean? It all goes together. So what do we do with this?’ So that was new, but I think that’s kind of a life thing — ‘What, you don’t want all of me?’”

Whether discussing her fashion line or her upcoming acting projects, Holmes says her goal is to keep trying something new, and not “being afraid to fail.” “Who cares?” she says. “At least you tried. It’s usually the people who haven’t tried who are the naysayers.”

At the moment, Holmes is trying to integrate herself into the tight-knit New York fashion industry; on Wednesday night, she was on hand at the 9th annual Style Awards at Lincoln Center (left), presenting Carolina Herrera with the designer of the year award.

The two chatted backstage before the show, Holmes posing for photos with Herrera, who told the actress she wore her Carolina Herrera ensemble “very well.” Before leaving the venue, Holmes stopped to talk to Smash star Katharine McPhee, telling the starlet, “You look gorgeous.”

A source who saw Holmes told PEOPLE that “she seemed like she was in a great mood. Everybody knows she loves fashion, so she was happy to be here.” Catch the Style Awards next Friday, Sept. 14, on the Style Network, and hear more from Holmes (she reveals her love of a major pop star!) in the clip below.

I love Bobbi Brown and Katie Holmes will be a great addition!

“Everyone knows she loves fashion…” – then why does always look so frumpy. Even that outfit in the picture doesn’t really look good on her.

Annie on

What’s the matter – the acting career isn’t going anywhere so now she’s doing this?

Rebecca on

Good for katie…tom cruise who? She is beautiful!

sally on

She looks really good here. Love the skirt! She’s perfect for Bobbi Brown!

jessica on

Her make-up always looks great. She’ll be a great face and name to attach to the brand.

Alexa on

Katie is really beautiful. What a woman! Good luck to her.

steve hernon on

Hard to get more ludicrous than that! Not afraid to fail with another foolish meaningless cosmetic/clothes fashion idea from a nobody who has never done anything. LOL
It is like Serena Williams being a fashion designer.

Ivytwine on

I like Katie however the only reason she is still in the news is because she was married to TC. If she had not done that few of us would still remember her..

Jenny! on

I’m sure she won’t fail, her name alone will sell w/e

great fit for bobbi brown… KH usually looks fresh and pretty. I wish I had her recent financial windfall to not be afraid to fail. Tom Cruise: what a lottery ticket!

I want to like Katie Holmes but I keep feeling like she ‘played’ Tom Cruise, the media, her fans. Her moves seem calculated and fake. She plays up her ‘mid-western’ values, but something just doesn’t ring true. I know and understand what I read is just ‘gossip’ and I don’t know the real Katie or the real story – its just my personal feeling that I am sharing.

Ninjababy on

Lol, well i wish her luck, but truly i can barely remember her name. I have often refered to her as ‘the chick who married Tom Cruise”, she is so beige. truly forgettable.

Katie who?

we know honey……..

Honestly, she looked frumpy when she was with Tom, since the divorce she looks amazing! She really is turning into a beautiful woman!!!

Sam on

Her clothes always look so unstylish. She needs fashion advice badly. Just look at the picture above. I do not call that fashion, I call that a major flop!!

Norah on

Though quite lovely, she always looks like her clothes are one size too big, which gives her a ill-fit, frumpy, hardly put together look.
I do wish her well. Much happiness, success and blessings to her.

Kudos to Katie! Such a natural beauty!

Donna on

Ok, you obviously didn’t read the article. Her outfit is an original Carolina Herrera to whom Katie presented the award for designer of the year. Hardly frumpy and hardly unstylish. I’d like to see all of your fashion credentials. Katie is a stunning, natural beauty–a perfect match for Bobbi Brown cosmetics. And Katie is also an amazing actress. Unfortunately, her career was sidelined when married to that loon Tom Cruise. She was the one played–not the other way around. Good for her for moving on with her life and following her passion.

Lisa on

She dresses like the little midwesterner she was raised as. I’ve always thought that. It was actually kind of heartwarming to me because it seemed like it was a part of her she didn’t want to let go, and I admire her for that.

sally on

She sure looks GREAT since the divorce! She is glowing and smiling! I am happy for her!

NYChix on

Oh Donna, just because you adore Katie doesn’t mean everyone has to. People have their own opinions on what they like in fashion and how they feel others look. If Katie hadn’t married good old Tommy boy and then divorced him, no one would be giving her a second thought today.

Sam on

Where is HER fashion sense?? I never see her wear anything cute or in style…

MD on

What color lipstick did Katie wear to the Style Awards last night? I love it. Is it Bobbi Brown?

Donna on

NYChix~ that’s my point. She had a movie career going when she met Tom. I am quite confident that we would all know who she is because she’d have a career on her own. I just don’t think people need to be so mean. It’s not necessary, that’s all.

Dianne on

What’s with the “crooked smile” – I never saw it in her “early” years and photos. Now I see it all the time and I don’t think it’s very attractive.

Paris on

It’s not a smile, it’s a smirk, and I agree, it’s not very attractive.

Pam on

She’s always had that crooked smile

Pam on

Please throw out those tan boots then! We’ve seen those on you in every single picture for months. Don’t you have enough money to buy another pair of shoes? Or a million shoes for that matter. Frumpy momma!

MAZEY on

She doesn’t know much about fashion, she looks frumpy and not polished always.

anest36 on

She looks classy, just gorgeous! WTG girl!

cris on

I think she’ll be great…

danielle on

I don’t get why the media constantly push this woman as fashion forward. She is so fashion backward that it is excruciating at times to view her. Often her outfits clash, don’t flatter her figure, the pieces don’t go together, sometimes they are wrinkled, stained and dirty (mainly jeans), and she has a habit of wearing her pants way too tight – you can tell because the seams start to twist around her leg. That is tight! And let’s not get started on those filthy boots! Her hair is often dirty, messy, and unbrushed or groomed. She often looks as though she didn’t wash her face. So how can any fashion publication, blog or make up manufacturer talk about her having a look, being a fashion icon or even relevant in the fashion world?

costateofmind on

These pictures on this page look good. She actually has some style. Most photos show her wearing some oversized denim shirt or other frumpy attire. She usually couples that with an unenthused facial expression. If this is her business, you would think we would see it carry over to her personal life as well.

NYC on

I thought she already failed in fashion.

Sarah on

It’s no surprise that Katie would delve into the fashion industry. She’s an avid seamstress and learned this from her mother at an early age. I have read that she is very creative in this department and has been sewing dresses and other apparel as a hobby for a long time. She also looks fabulous in anything she wears. And the Bobbi Brown cosmetics line is a perfect fit for her, as she is a natural beauty and the perfect representative for this product.

Be carefull. One of the fiiinaslng factors to closing mk80 chemical research was a seperate branch of the research that dug into dream research and electronic signals artificialy induced synapses. Try and remember this within the next week you will dream about me. When you do, it was NOT with the assitance of your mobile signal. I dont beleive in artificial stimulation. You might say, I beleive in staring at goats. Simular to what is happening to the software industry, the NSA, CIA, FBI, have been going through a transition that invites abuse. Where a programmer wants people to see his work, and get paid, the company wants the rootkit, spyware, and espionage unofficially ofcourse. Back to your subject, the monarch programming was unreliable with artificial tools but very successfull when using the old ways , dream couching. So when you have that dream I mentioned, remember Queensriche and Silent Lucidity.
