Many celebrities are loyal to designer friends, but Heidi Klum holds an extra-special place in her heart for Project Runway alum Christian Siriano.

“I’m very proud of him,” she told PEOPLE Wednesday night at the opening of the designer’s New York City boutique. “I always knew that he was going to get places because he is just a real hard worker.”

His talents extend past designing, too, said the supermodel, who wore a BCBG Max Azria dress and tried on several of Siriano’s creations throughout the evening. “I think that there are a lot of great young designers out there, but he really works outside of just doing clothes,” she explained. “He’s always out and about. He’s very friendly to people.”

And he takes care of V.I.P.s — especially one German blonde in particular. “When I need something, he always sends things,” she shared. “He calls all the time asking if I need anything. That’s important because there are so many people out there, so if you don’t squeak then you don’t get the oil. You have to be the squeaky wheel or people will forget about you, and he does that really well.” Tell us: Are you a fan of Siriano’s designs?
