Kellie Pickler Shaves Her Head in Support of Cancer-Fighting Friend

I’ve always thought Kellie Pickler was a bit of a ditz, but obviously she is a dedicated and thoughtful friend. Good for you, Kellie, for being supportive, and best wishes to Summer Miller on a successful treatment and speedy recovery.

I did the same thing for my best friend last year. At the age of 35 she was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer, it was my way of showing that she didn’t have to fight the fight alone.
It warms my heart to see that there are other woman who support their bff the same way. And they’re right, its JUST hair…it will grow back.

Kellie Pickler did a very SELFLESS thing! The fact that her friend probaby feels less of a woman physically due to the loss of both breasts and shaved her head before she began to lose her own hair. GOD BLESS KELLIE for loving her friend so much to be so loving and caring to change her image. That is a true friendship and true love!

It is easier to shave it off than pick it up off your pillow. And how blessed to have a friend like that. It grows back, sometimes thicker, sometimes curly and god bless you and fight the good fight, from one survivor to another.

I lost my mother to breast cancer in August 2008. She was very self conscious about her baldness, so I shaved my head as well. I encouraged her go hat-free and be comfortable in her own skin. By the end, she would also appear in public hatless. I really understand Kellie’s choice and I hope her friend’s treatment is successful. Both of them are beautiful warriors!

I really think that this is inspiring. Not many people I’ve seen would do this and for a singer, or anyone else in the show business, to do this, makes me smile. It shows that there is still hope in this world. Go Kellie! And go Summer! You both truly are inspirations! :)

I think it’s awesome that Kellie Pickler shaved her head in support of her friend. They are both beautiful women and look awesome! My mother was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2010 and is cancer free today. :) I know Summer has a long road ahead of her but with the love & support of family & friends, she’ll get thru the tough times. I also highly recommend acupuncture! It helps in preventing nausea. Good luck!

I’ve always thought Kelly Pickler was a wonderful person and this just reaffirms that belief. They are so lucky to have each other. All of us girls offered to shave our heads too when my sister lost her hair. They both look absolutely beautiful. I pray for her recovery and an end to cancer.

Kelli Pickler hits me as somebody who has to scream to get a constant flow of attention. Her career is stalled, perhaps for good, so she has to resort to some drastic measure to get the camera on herself. I think it’s nice she does this, but – why? It won’t cure the cancer. Sorry – but if she wants to support breast cancer there are better ways to do it. If we all shaved our heads everytime a good friend got such a horrible diagnosis (and it is a horrible thing to have cancer) the world would become quite the unattractive place. Attention getting is what Ms Pickler is all about, I am sorry but it’s true.

I was very fortunate when I was diagnosed 25 years ago to not have to undergo chemo or a mastecomy. I was 36 and my dr. at that time was not co-operative about giving me a mammography. I am glad I was proactive because it saved my life. I wish Summer the best and Kellie is a friend, the BEST of friends. I have seen spouses do the same for their wives and its amazing what we do to be supportive. And to cast a stone as being a ditz….well then…so what! I love Kellie and she is a loving, caring friend.
I hope Summer has a healthy life going forward. I am now 61 and breast cancer can be beat. God Bless

As a cancer survivor I know that the support of family and friends is so very important to anyone going through cancer treatment. I’d have to agree that shaving your head is much better. I cut mine shorter but waking up to all the hair on your pillow is disheartening so I shaved the rest off. I felt so much better. Kelly you are awesome! Both women are beautiful, hair or no hair, their inner beauty shines through! Take care and stay strong!

Six yrs ago I went through the same thing. When I first started shedding I got a really short cute do. Then five days later I had to shave my head too. Whiloe I didn’t especially like the wigs, no hair was kind of liberating. And it grew back curly! Best wishes to you. From now on you will always be a survivor!

LOVE Kellie! She is real down home people! I can relate to her empathy for her friend. My sister died from breast cancer at the age of 27. I watched her take her last breath and soon thereafter, I had my first mammogram done at age 25. I pray for a cure for this horrific disease. My prayers go out to Summer and her loved ones. Some people might view what Kellie Pickler did as taking attention away from the actual patient. I guess you’d have to ask her friend how she felt about Kellie shaving her head. If the patient is okay with their friend shaving their head, then I see nothing wrong with it.

Special friend to do that in honor of her friend’s fight with breast cancer. Great support system. Kelli you rock. I hope and pray that Summer gets through this and becomes healthy again.

Go Kellie!!! I admire her for this and so many other reasons (her red high heels and the story behind a very special song)! Cancer should never be faced alone and this would be considered by many to be the ultimate sacrifice! Such an amazing thing to do. Our 8 year old daughter shaved her head at the end of March and raised money for childhood cancer (on her own..not doing it with any group). So, when I see others doing the same thing, I can’t help but smile and think how wonderful they are.

Ok, I’m shocked. The only thing I’ve heard of Kellie Pickler is the constant surgeries – from a beautiful girl that was on American Idol to a plastic doll. Thought she was very insecure and ditsy. She really showed me! I guess we shouldn’t assume the worse about people. What a great friend! So thoughtful and selfless. I hope I could do the same but I’m not sure if I would! In May 2011, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemotherapy treatments from June 2011 through September 2011 with a double mastectomy in November 2011. My hair has grown back AND as I say . . . I’m on the other side of breast cancer! Best wishes and prayers to all diagnosed with this dreaded disease.

I considered doing that back in college when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a short, pixie, “boy” cut so it was easier for her. In the end my mom told me not to since I have really long hair. I sometimes wish I had done it in unison with her. Great for Kellie!! I envy her strength!

I’ve always wondered if this made the person with cancer feel better or worse. That is, does it really feel like support or does it feel like someone is taking attention from your cancer to make them look like a good person? How about if your friend is a celebrity, does it feel more like PR and a career move or does it genuinely feel like they care about you?

Well good for her and I think she looks very pretty. She should consider a short hair cut when it grows back in. she looks great with no hair.

When my hair started falling out I shaved it all off too but bald did not look as good on me as it does on these two beautiful women. Since Idol I have watched her give back to the soldiers with her USO tours, so I don’t think she would hesitate to help a friend!

This is the first time I’ve ever been impressed with something she’s done. Every time I’ve seen an interview with her, etc., she always comes off sounding so….well….unintelligent? I’m not trying to be mean, but it’s been true. This article has given her a new light and I’m sure her husband is very proud of his loyal and devoted wife :)

As a survivor who was diagnosed with breast cancer in my 30′s, I find it insulting when someone shaves their head to “support” cancer patients. It minimizes what we go through. You are not sharing our experience by being bald. It may look like the major thing we go through to outsiders, but it is not the big deal of our ordeal. Try having your breast cut off, going through premature menopause, having your veins turn brown and your cognitive function diminsh from chemo; THEN you’re sharing in the experience.

This made me tear up but not because of what Kelly did, it’s the people putting her down. Unless you go thru cancer you don’t know how it affects you. Things that didn’t mean much before cancer means so much after. You have people telling you what you have to do. That was the hardest part for me. Doctors, nurses, specialists all tell you what you need to do. So Kelly shaving her head is an act of love and honor. My husband and son shaved their heads. My hair came back in curly then found lung cancer and shaved my head the second time. So now I’m bald again. But it will grow back. I’ll pray for you Summer, and Kelly God bless you!!

Kudos to Kellie! My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in Feb and is getting close to being finished with chemo. Her hair was well below her waist and when the time came, she had it cut off and then I shaved her head and I shaved mine too. I know what that means to Summer, to have a “real” friend like Kellie and we wish you both the very best!

Having battled breast cancer over the last year (dx at 39, chemo first, then surgery, followed by radiation), I think what Kellie did is amazing. I wish Summer the absolute best in beating this disease. There definitely needs to be some review of the “age” requirements regarding mammograms.

What a great friend!!!! Summer I am 45 and going through my second battle with breast cancer. I have lost my hair twice and really it’s no big deal in the grand scheme of things. I am a breast cancer survivor!! I could NOT disagree with Mindy more!!! A friend of mine was going to shave her head for me and I would not let her. Yes, it is invigorating after you shave you head but it is a scary road ahead. Even though the chemo feels like it is making you worse off out IS making you better. Kellie shaving her head is just saying that she is there for a friend and there to support her…good times and bad. Mindy,you need to find a support group our confide in someone. After I was all done I ended up having to talk to a therapist. It changed my way of thinking. Life is too short. Savor every moment. Xoxo

I always thought that Kellie seemed like a sweet down to earth girl. While I watched her on American Idol I was not a big fan…..until now. What a friend. My wife just went through everything Summer went through. I shaved my head with her when the time came, but being a guy I never thought it was a big deal. For Kellie to do it just amazes me and she seemed more than happy to. It’s a horrible disease and the more cheerleaders and support you have the better recovery goes. I’ll be praying for Summer during her chemo. Chemo is not a lot of fun and she’ll need her friends more than ever. I hate cancer of all kinds.
