Kellie Pickler Shaves Her Head in Support of Cancer-Fighting Friend

Now this is friendship. Kellie Pickler appeared in a video clip on Good Morning America Wednesday sporting a very different look: a totally shaved head.

The country starlet buzzed off her blonde locks on Tuesday in support of her best friend, Summer Holt Miller, 36, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and is starting chemotherapy treatments on Thursday.

“Cancer does not discriminate,” Pickler said in a release. Added Miller, “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.”

Miller — who has a family history of breast cancer — has always been vigilant about self-exams, and asked her doctor for a mammogram when she felt something might be wrong. After doctors did find a tumor, the mother of two underwent a double mastectomy, and was declared cancer-free in August (her chemotherapy treatments will help ensure the cancer doesn’t come back).

Pickler called Tuesday a “life-changing day,” and Miller made the reasons for shaving her head clear on her Caring Bridge website. “I was told that it was mentally much easier to do it this way than to wake up with my hair on my pillow,” she wrote. “I’m really not that apprehensive about shaving my head. It is hair and it will grow back.” Catch a behind-the-scenes clip of the women shaving their heads on Tuesday hereWhat do you think of Pickler’s move? And leave your well-wishes for Miller in the comments below!

I’ve always thought Kellie Pickler was a bit of a ditz, but obviously she is a dedicated and thoughtful friend. Good for you, Kellie, for being supportive, and best wishes to Summer Miller on a successful treatment and speedy recovery.

whatever on

What an AMAZING thing to do and what amazing people!!!

I did the same thing for my best friend last year. At the age of 35 she was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer, it was my way of showing that she didn’t have to fight the fight alone.
It warms my heart to see that there are other woman who support their bff the same way. And they’re right, its JUST hair…it will grow back.
Best wishes to Summer!

myla on

Made me tear up… <3

Kellie Pickler ROCKS with no locks!!!

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at 37. By 48, she was gone. Anything that will bring awareness to breast cancer or any cancer research and treatment is a plus! Go Kellie and good luck Summer!

Sherri on

As a breast cancer survivor I think that is AWESOME! I have a new respect for Kellie. Wishing her friend all the best!

Erica on

Wow I have never been a Kellie Pickler fan AT ALL. I actually find her annoyingly ditzy, but I have to give her major props on this. That’s amazingly sweet and kind of her.

Kel on

THIS is love and friendship! Stay strong, Summer! You’re both amazing women :)

Sara on

I agree with Mrs. P, good on her for doing that. That takes a lot of courage, especially being in the spot light like she is. I have a new found respect for her. Kudos Kellie.

Cynthia on

We’re all rootin for you!!! Fell better soon beautiful!

Jennifer on

Many Prayers for you Summer and Kellie you are a true friend. The two of you are beautiful!!!!! Much love.

Skae on

Part friend, part major PR stunt IMO. I have had many friends who have survived or died from cancer (as recently as this summer, my SIL died) and they would NOT want me to shave my head. There are so many other ways to be supportive.

Sorry Kelly. If you weren’t a celeb, you probably would not have done this.

jerseygirl on

kudos to Kellie. thats nice she did that for her BFF. I am also a 2 1/2 year breast cancer survivor.

brit on

Its amazing how beautiful she looks :) Good luck Summer

JKW on

Two very beautiful women. God bless both of them. Prayers for Summer.

Jody on

I’ve always loved Kellie Pickler since the AI days and now this is one more reason to love her even more!! What a great friend!

George on

BRAVO, Kellie! What a fabulous way to support your friend. I don’t know many women who would be so brave as to shave their head for a friend. God bless!

Teneisha on

she’s a cool and real friend to do that for her !!!!!!

Shannon on

Kellie Pickler did a very SELFLESS thing! The fact that her friend probaby feels less of a woman physically due to the loss of both breasts and shaved her head before she began to lose her own hair. GOD BLESS KELLIE for loving her friend so much to be so loving and caring to change her image. That is a true friendship and true love!

michaelia on

awesome! i love hearing stories like this! the news has so many bad stories and it drags me down lol its nice to read about someone doing something so thoughtful for someone they love! I have 2 best friends and we’ve all been friends for 11 years now and they know my hair its my favorite thing about myself.. but i don’t think they know that i would definitely, without hesitation, do this to support them! The best thing you can give someone in their time of need is support! Way to go Kellie! Youre showing women and young girls how to have fearless love for one another! Such a wonderful thing to show off!

Lisa Grassa on

It is easier to shave it off than pick it up off your pillow. And how blessed to have a friend like that. It grows back, sometimes thicker, sometimes curly and god bless you and fight the good fight, from one survivor to another.

Toni Foster on

Kellie is the “typical country girl” not just singing like an angel but also being one to her friend…Kellie may not have known about calamari but she knows what the important things are and if shaving her head made her friend feel better (along with a lot of other people) it’s a “good thing”…Best Wishes to Summer

Sheila Lundlee on

I lost my mother to breast cancer in August 2008. She was very self conscious about her baldness, so I shaved my head as well. I encouraged her go hat-free and be comfortable in her own skin. By the end, she would also appear in public hatless. I really understand Kellie’s choice and I hope her friend’s treatment is successful. Both of them are beautiful warriors!

Jessica on

They are both beautiful with or without hair! Good luck to you Summer. It is wonderful to have such a great supportive friend to help you along the way!!

DebbieinJuneau on

I’ve always loved Kelly, I’ve never believed she was a ditz. What a caring, wonderful friend & woman!

sylvia on

Now that is what I call a true friend.

Meredith C on

Way to go Kellie and Summer!!!! So proud of you both! And…yall couldn’t look more absolutely gorgeous!!!! xoxoxo

Cynthia Hardy on

Kellie is such a beautiful person. She has always shown her love and devotion to her friends and family, but this shows how deep her devotion runs. By the way I think she is hot with the shaved head.

timbrooks1957 on

the perfect attention grab…yeah, call me cynical. shaves her head(for a good cause, IMO)and all the cameras turn toward her…calculated? god, i hope not…

Lisa on

I don’t know anything about Kellie but that is such a sweet and selfless gesture. That is a true friend. I hope Summer gets well.

Sara C on

I really think that this is inspiring. Not many people I’ve seen would do this and for a singer, or anyone else in the show business, to do this, makes me smile. It shows that there is still hope in this world. Go Kellie! And go Summer! You both truly are inspirations! :)

Ti on

This made me tear up. This is what friendship is all about. It’s nice to know that some celebrities haven’t forgotten who they are, where they’ve come from and who’s truly important to them. Kudos to Kellie and best wishes to her friend for a successful recovery.

Melissa on

It takes a really awesome person to do this for someone. I dont know much about Kellie but she really is a true friend. Most people would offer a small apology and be on their way but a friendship means so much more than that. Good luck in your remission hun, God bless you!

LuluAZ on

Awesome move!

Linda Marion on

Two beautiful women; healing and peace and love. I could always see the sweetness in Kellie’s heart. I love her.

Merin on

Ms. Pickler, how you have grown since your AI days! So good to see a person change and grow in such a positive way.

Lisa Barrett on

I think Kelly is an Awesome Friend…as vain as the world today ,for Kelly to shave her hair off shows how much Summer means to her! Sending Prayers to Summer , I know you will Kick Cancer in the Butt! I ‘m so Glad you have a friend such as Kelly to Help you through the hard times you will face!! …You Girls Rock!!

Crystal Riley on

I love my hair, but I LOVE my family & friends more… I wouldn’t hesitate to do the same from them!
Such an amazing & touching story – way to go, Kellie – U TRULY ROCK!!
:-)

Christine on

Awww, what an angel. God Bless you both!

kammie jackson on

I never believe in “cancer free” since those cells are just dormant or in remission……but, wow…I think mammos are good at 35 (base screening)…

kelly on

Wow – who needs hair. Those are two really beautiful women there. :) What a great friend. Wish them both all the best.

A on

Now THAT is a friend !!!

A on

Now THAT is a friend !!

Kelly on

I think this is an inpritation to everyone!! I would honestly do the same if it was me…it’s just hair!!

Sonya on

I think it’s awesome that Kellie Pickler shaved her head in support of her friend. They are both beautiful women and look awesome! My mother was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2010 and is cancer free today. :) I know Summer has a long road ahead of her but with the love & support of family & friends, she’ll get thru the tough times. I also highly recommend acupuncture! It helps in preventing nausea. Good luck!

Nina on

I think Kellie is a wonderful, caring friend to shave her head. Someone in show business as she is, depends on their looks in part to be successful, and for her to do this shows what a thoughtful, supportive friend she is. God Bless You, Kellie, you show what true friendship is all about.

Debbie on

I think they are both beautiful!

Fran on

I’ve always been a fan of Kellie Pickler ever since she first appeared on American Idol and I continue to listen to her!! I think that was she did was wonderful…it shows her dedication and support to her friend! I wish Summer nothing but the best has she goes through this journey! You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers!!

Donna Schiefer on

Good luck to Kellie and her best friend – what a wonderful thing to do! So much emphasis is on looks and this goes to prove that what is in your heart is much more important than looks.

Kelly on

They both look beautiful! It’s always good to have friends along side you during a battle. God bless!!

Scott Woodard on

Goes to show you that it’s not just the looks that makes Kellie Pickler such a beautiful woman!

Samantha on

Kellie can rock a bald head! I think she is beautiful and totally selfless to do something like this for her friend. Best wishes to Summer as she begins the roller coaster of chemo.

Vera on

Sending every possible good wish to Summer. I look at your photo and see a positive, vibrant woman who is beating this disease with everything she has. I love that Kellie supported you this way. For me the story is less about hair and more about regaining your good health with the support of a good friend. You go, girl!!

Mary on

This is awesome! Way to go Kellie, and she looks beautiful with no hair. Wishing Summer a speedy recovery. Cancer sucks!

Linda on

Well wishes and prays to Summer and all women suffering from breast cancer. Kellie, you are a great friend and I’m sure Summer is comforted by your friendship.

Jennifer on

I really wasn’t a super fan of her music. But now I’m a super fan! We in the world need more people like her!! Kelly you are amazing!!

Jackie Lemmink on

Hair is a pain in the ass for women. Takes so much time. I hope they both enjoy the break from it. That is the only good thing about cancer. It brings out the love in people and it should..

Linda on

Well wishes and prays to Summer and all women suffering from breast cancer. Kellie, you are a great friend and I’m sure Summer is comforted by your friendship.

***You know…these two women are very beautiful even without hair!

Krista Callahan on

My prayers for you Summer and how amazing Kelly to support your friend in this way. True beauty comes from the inside and you have shown just how beautiful your heart is. God Bless You!

Shannon on

What a great friend!!! You go Kellie and god bless you both!

LoriD on

To all the sad and apathetic commentors about it being a publicity stunt, I say…WELL DUH HUH! That’s is the POINT! We all need to be reminded everyday of those who fight the fights we don’t, whose sacrifices and struggles advance our world so that hopefully others don’t have to face these things. My GOD I would hate to see the world through your eyes. GOOD JOB Kellie! Now your friend will recieve tons of prayers she might not have otherwise gotten. It’s called support people, if you can’t do it yourself, don’t dump on those who do!

Jamie on

There goes Kellie’s career!

Shannon on

What an awesome friend she is!! God bless them both!!

I’ve always thought Kelly Pickler was a wonderful person and this just reaffirms that belief. They are so lucky to have each other. All of us girls offered to shave our heads too when my sister lost her hair. They both look absolutely beautiful. I pray for her recovery and an end to cancer.

Emmalee on

Nadine on

WOW !!! That is true friendship for sure….just to show that doesnt matter if you have hair or not that doesnt change the beauty that one has….Kudos to Kelly you the definition of a true friend….Good luck to your friend and hope everything is ok with her

otherguest on

I don’t understand it I guess. She’s just as good a friend without shaving her head. Hopefully it was donated or something.

Pat on

I am a breast cancer survivor who lost her hair and was blessed enough to have people who loved me do the same so I didn’t feel like the odd person. God bless kellie for being such a loving and amazing friend!

Jennifer on

This brought me instant tears. :)

sophie on

i met kellie when she was doing AI and she had an absolute heart of gold then. i am so impressed with her for doing this for her friend and sharing it with the public as a reminder to be proactive about our health and that cancer can happen to anyone.

sophie on

and best wishes to summer on a healthy road ahead!

kitty62862 on

What a beautiful gesture. Friendship like that is rare, and precious.

RiverBoatQueen on

Kelli Pickler hits me as somebody who has to scream to get a constant flow of attention. Her career is stalled, perhaps for good, so she has to resort to some drastic measure to get the camera on herself. I think it’s nice she does this, but – why? It won’t cure the cancer. Sorry – but if she wants to support breast cancer there are better ways to do it. If we all shaved our heads everytime a good friend got such a horrible diagnosis (and it is a horrible thing to have cancer) the world would become quite the unattractive place. Attention getting is what Ms Pickler is all about, I am sorry but it’s true.
Godspeed to her lovely friend.

Laura on

I am a breast cancer survivor (8 years). I had a friend who offered to shave her head in support of me. Greatful for her offer to do that but I couldn’t let her do it!! I applaud Kellie for doing this for her friend. It is a blessing to have such devoted friends and it will help her get through this tough time. Best wishses for a speedy recover.

Tony Jenkins on

WAY TO GO PICKLER…THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS TO SUMMER MILLER…I SALUTE YOU PICKLER FOR BEING A TRUE FRIEND…NOT MANY OF THOSE LEFT THESE DAYS…BUT OF COURSE YOU ARE FROM NORTH CAROLINA…YOU STAND A BETTER CHANCE THAN MOST…JUST SAYING

dd on

Now that’s a good friend! So heartwarming…

Amanda on

Such a cool story. THANKS for sharing.

Cass on

As a cancer survivor I have to say that what Kelly did means a lot. Support of family and friends is so important when you’re going through cancer treatment. Both are beautiful women so hair or no hair their inner beauty shines through. :)

Judi on

I was very fortunate when I was diagnosed 25 years ago to not have to undergo chemo or a mastecomy. I was 36 and my dr. at that time was not co-operative about giving me a mammography. I am glad I was proactive because it saved my life. I wish Summer the best and Kellie is a friend, the BEST of friends. I have seen spouses do the same for their wives and its amazing what we do to be supportive. And to cast a stone as being a ditz….well then…so what! I love Kellie and she is a loving, caring friend.
I hope Summer has a healthy life going forward. I am now 61 and breast cancer can be beat. God Bless

brian on

what a sweetheart this girl is

Cass on

Thank you Kelly for showing your support for your friend! It shows what a kind and caring person you are. As a cancer survivor I know that the support of family and friends is so very important to anyone going through cancer treatment. I’d have to agree that shaving your head is much better. I cut mine shorter but waking up to all the hair on your pillow is disheartening so I shaved the rest off. I felt so much better. Kelly you are awesome! Both women are beautiful, hair or no hair, their inner beauty shines through! Take care and stay strong!

Kali on

My husband did the same for me when I began losing my hair to chemotherapy. He made sure his hair was always shorter than mine – no matter what length mine was. Kellie is making a thoughtful and empathetic gesture. Her actions will mean more between the women than words can ever say.

MyTwoCents on

Love it! They are beautiful!!

Melissa on

This just made me smile! Good for you, Kellie! You are an amazing BFF!!!! XOXO

Jane Vilfer on

Kellie, you are awesome. Summer, you are right. It grows back.
Six yrs ago I went through the same thing. When I first started shedding I got a really short cute do. Then five days later I had to shave my head too. Whiloe I didn’t especially like the wigs, no hair was kind of liberating. And it grew back curly! Best wishes to you. From now on you will always be a survivor!

Nicki Antrim on

Awesome!!! Way to go Kelly, love your support for your friend, and I will be praying for her…;-)

Cheryl Whitley on

LOVE Kellie! She is real down home people! I can relate to her empathy for her friend. My sister died from breast cancer at the age of 27. I watched her take her last breath and soon thereafter, I had my first mammogram done at age 25. I pray for a cure for this horrific disease. My prayers go out to Summer and her loved ones. God Bless!

lainey on

Kellie Pickler, you are the true definition of a friend. How amazing to do that for someone you love.

I’ve always thought that Kellie was one wonderful person. She is loving, kind and just plain great. I’m not surprised that she shaved her head to support her friend. I’m very proud! Love you Kellie and I’m praying for you Summer!

hopeful7726 on

Wow! I give Kellie a lot of credit. Not a lot of women would have the guts to do that.

TMTyler on

Thanks, Kelli, for the encouragement for women to have mammograms before the age of 40. My cancer was detected through a mammogram. Thank God, I am now cancer free as well. All the best to Ms. Miller, with treatment and recovery!

Melissa on

They are both beautiful! People might think Kellie is a “ditz”, but I think she is a very real person. She is not afraid to be herself and I am thankful that she uses her celebrity status to bring attention to issues such as this. I love Kellie and I love that she is a Carolina girl!!!

Amy on

And they both look stunning!! I’ve always said, if I had a friend going through this I would do the same thing! That’s some serious support and great everlasting friendship right here! God Bless you both and may he be with Summer always, and help her get through this!

Good for her. That is friendship to the fullest! I admire her for supporting her best friend during a difficult time.

What an inspirational story. Best wishes to Summer and Kelly, there is no words to express your dedication and kindness. If you have time, check ou Hope’s Story. She was televised on WBTV Charlotte. The Lord called her home several years after the 1st televised story but she lives on today. Every yearthere is an outpouring of support for the cause of cancer.

ashley on

She looks stunning

Cat on

Beautiful friends.

Anonymous101 on

Some people might view what Kellie Pickler did as taking attention away from the actual patient. I guess you’d have to ask her friend how she felt about Kellie shaving her head. If the patient is okay with their friend shaving their head, then I see nothing wrong with it.

thedreamyfish on

What a wonderful, selfless, supportive thing to do as a best friend. I wish Summer the best!

denise on

Special friend to do that in honor of her friend’s fight with breast cancer. Great support system. Kelli you rock. I hope and pray that Summer gets through this and becomes healthy again.

sarah on

She is only seeking attention, too bad she’s using her friends cancer to get it.

Happy Mamaw on

Go Kellie!!! I admire her for this and so many other reasons (her red high heels and the story behind a very special song)! Cancer should never be faced alone and this would be considered by many to be the ultimate sacrifice! I LOVE her show of support for her friend and I wish her successful treatment followed by years of health and happiness! These kinds of stories are why I work with Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society ~ we like helping to make more birthdays :)

Lara on

Way to go Kellie, you could even borrow some of Dolly’s wigs:) You are a truly blessed friend!! God bless Summer:)

hairy krishna on

so now folks have to have legitimate reasons simply because they made a decision to shave their heads? so that Britney Spears did it, it was a bad decision, but that Kellie Pickler did it, was a good decision? i know a guy who shaved his head because he felt like it, big deal so what. it grew back. that all of your comments praise pickler is ridiculous.

Tara on

Such an amazing thing to do. Our 8 year old daughter shaved her head at the end of March and raised money for childhood cancer (on her own..not doing it with any group). So, when I see others doing the same thing, I can’t help but smile and think how wonderful they are.

What a WONDERFUL thing to do to show support for her friend. Not many people would be willing to do so and I think this shows her love and concern. To Summer: Keep fighting the battle and best wishes to you :)

Julie on

You both look beautiful!

Why are people posting…..i’m not a fan but…..
Don’t post or read articles about Kellie if you are not a fan!
Unneeded postings!
Kellie has done a most honorable thing by shaving her head in support of her best friend! Cancer is nothing to mess around with and whatever anyone can do to make someone feel better is great.
Don’t post negative stuff….keep it to yourself!

Crystal on

Kellie has my total respect! I shaved my head as a fundraiser for cancer awareness bacuse cancer runs in my family. More power to her! Hopefully she bought a cap, cause her head will get cold!

True love for someone takes the fear out of doing something like this for support! May God bless Summer and keep her on her journey of healing. They are both beautiful!!

Tammy on

They are both beautiful women, with bright faces, pleasure not to have to do your hair int he southern humidity!

Cindy on

I think what Kellie did was beautiful. I waited too long to shave my head and suffered through panic and anxiety attacks finding hair in clumps….I got lucky and had my husband shave his head along with me.

It truly makes you feel warm inside to know someone will go that distance with you. Good for you Kellie and best of luck Summer!

Elizabeth on

They both are beautiful!

Kristen on

What a wonderful friend! Best wishes to Summer!!

Sharon on

I too had breast cancer and having friends stick with you is so very important. My friends were dynamic and I’m thankful to have them in my life. Pickler showed her friendship and I commend her for it. More people should SHOW their friendship instead of TALKING about how close they are t someone.

silvershamrockd on

Awesome. BOTH women are amazing.

I feel sorry for SKAE, you obviously missed the point.

I think it is a class act!
My wife’s son Mitch and myself did the same thing in 1991.

I don’t get the sympathy head shave thing. Does a friend care less if she keeps her hair? But I wish Summer 100% success in her treatment.

TMZ leaked friend with cancer is a front. Per hospital records, Pickler diagnosed with stage 2 hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Marlene Braly on

I think Kellie Pickles is an amazing person to do that for her friend , I have my oldest sister who is 41 and she also has breast cancer not in remission yet but is going through chemo and if I even thought there was a chance she was losing her hair I would shave my head for her also

Fran Foor on

I always like Kelli now she just went to a higher level in my eyes. She is someone very special to do what she did. God bless her and especially her friend Summer.

JOHN on

SHE IS STILL BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT. I WANT TO SHAVE MY HEAD NOW, WHERES MY SCISSORS ? : o )

Congratulations Summer on being cancer-free and for being so diligent about self-exams! And even though you got breast cancer at such a young age, you are a very lucky woman to have a friend like Kellie that loves you so much. I don’t think I’ve EVER had a friend like that. God bless you all!!! <3

Sarah on

That is very admirable! Makes me respect Kellie Pickler a lot for doing this. I don’t think there are very many other celebrities who would dare do this.

Gosia W. on

Ok, I’m shocked. The only thing I’ve heard of Kellie Pickler is the constant surgeries – from a beautiful girl that was on American Idol to a plastic doll. Thought she was very insecure and ditsy. She really showed me! I guess we shouldn’t assume the worse about people. What a great friend! So thoughtful and selfless. I hope I could do the same but I’m not sure if I would! Both girls look gorgeous!!! Best wishes to Summer Holt Miller!! She must be a very special person.

Oddly enough, Kelly Pickler looks better with a shaved head. Her attempts to look like Carrie Underwood have missed the mark. But that’s a secondary benefit, next to supporting a friend.

I was also 36 & mom of 2 when I had my first Breast Ca diagnosis on 10/04/2002. I lost my hair twice & still get treatment, but am so blessed to still be here. The support of family & friends in the fight is so important. Kellie is a true friend & her friend is so lucky to have that kind of support. I wish her friend all the best. :-)

Danny on

I hasve been a Kellie Pickler fan since her appearance on American Idol. In spite of her professional success, she obviously remains a humble, caring individual. Thank goodness that she knows the correct way to use her celebrity status in an attempt to influence others. I give her a private standing ovation.

Janice on

She must be a genuinely good person!

Mariel on

Now, that’s putting your money where your mouth is…or maybe putting the razor where your head is. Girl power at its strongest. Kellie is a very supportive friend. Here’s to their special bond and especially to Summer’s treatment/recovery!

This story made me cry. That was a very sweet and brave thing for her to do for a friend. As someone else mentioned I thought she was one of those ditzy girls but this really shows a different side to her. What a sweet story. Hope you recover faster than the speed of light Summer!

I loved Kellie on American Idol because she seemed like such a sweet kid. She continues to show she is a great person and an inspiration. We need more people like Kellie in this world!

In May 2011, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Chemotherapy treatments from June 2011 through September 2011 with a double mastectomy in November 2011. My hair has grown back AND as I say . . . I’m on the other side of breast cancer! Best wishes and prayers to all diagnosed with this dreaded disease.

My hats off to you Kellie. Not only are you a very beautiful woman, but you have a heart of gold too.

Gloria on

Kellie looks absolutely beautiful! This is what I call friendship!

Marge on

I considered doing that back in college when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a short, pixie, “boy” cut so it was easier for her. In the end my mom told me not to since I have really long hair. I sometimes wish I had done it in unison with her. Great for Kellie!! I envy her strength!

Marge on

timbrooks1957- Are you that dense/dumb? This WAS calculated. To raise awareness for breast cancer.

Ella on

Such a sweet and inspiring thing to do!

Misty on

They are both beautiful ladies! My mother is a survivor of breast cancer, and I wish I would have done this! One more thing I could have done to fight the good fight with her! She fought and won!!! Good Luck on your chemo! Kick Cancers Butt!

Mary on

I wish I had that kind of friend.

Christina Renfer on

I wish I had done what you did Miss Miller, when I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer 5 years ago. I waited thinking I wouldn’t lose my hair and then one day, in the shower, it was coming out in clumps. I cried as my sister shaved it but felt so empowered afterwards. Still cancer free {knock on wood}. You will be too!! And, yes, the hair grows back :)

Patrick on

KP has one of those “Southern Hearts of Gold” and she is just as “cute and lovely” without the hair as with it. That “halo” over her head doesn’t hurt either!

Anonymous on

I think Kellie is a class act! People are way too hard on her. She is obviously a very sweet and caring person. Good for her, and best of luck to you, Summer!

BBB on

I’ve always wondered if this made the person with cancer feel better or worse. That is, does it really feel like support or does it feel like someone is taking attention from your cancer to make them look like a good person? How about if your friend is a celebrity, does it feel more like PR and a career move or does it genuinely feel like they care about you?

Kelli on

I am so moved by Kellie Pickler’s show of support for her friend! Way to go girl!!! Ms. Miller, you are in our thoughts and prayers for a treatment with hopefully mild side effects and a speedy recovery!

Lillith on

Well good for her and I think she looks very pretty. She should consider a short hair cut when it grows back in. she looks great with no hair.

I did a head shaving event for St.Baldrick’s three years ago to help raise money for childhood cancer. It is a wonderful experience as a woman to be able to make such a bold statement. I think Kelly and anyone like her should be proud of what they have done and BALD is beautiful, but helping to save a life and cure cancer is gorgeous!

guest on

Goose bump. How nice of Kellie to shave her hair.

arealfriend on

I am a BRAIN CANCER survivor and would not want anyone to shave his/her head – pls donate money for research instead.Sorry to hear about Summer’s cancer. Not sure Pickler’s intention was 100 percent pure. She is getting mentioned everywhere but so little focus is on Summer. Why did KP also feel the need to wear a very low cut top to nearly expose her surgically enhanced breasts? Best wishes to Summer for a full recovery.

Martha on

This is truly a friendship that I yern to experience one day. To see your friend endure a cancer prognosis, then a mysectomy, and chemo is unimaginable. Showing your commitment and support by shaving your head too…. That’s just beautiful. They look fab, and elegant. Way to go girls.

Katie on

What a selfless move!! Does anyone think Kim Kardashian would do something like this? I doubt it, she is too vain.

first, prayers and blessings to Ms. Miller in her continued recover and fight! May God watch over you and give you the strength you need. As a cancer patient, having the support of friends and family is so needed during this time. What a good friend Ms. Pickler is to support her friend in this manor! Since Idol I have watched her give back to the soldiers with her USO tours, so I don’t think she would hesitate to help a friend!

Rhey are both beautiful. The epitome of friendship.

This is the first time I’ve ever been impressed with something she’s done. Every time I’ve seen an interview with her, etc., she always comes off sounding so….well….unintelligent? I’m not trying to be mean, but it’s been true. This article has given her a new light and I’m sure her husband is very proud of his loyal and devoted wife :)

Kellie on

I would never shave my head for a friend who has cancer like seriously Kelly prob just did it because she’s famous and can afford a good enough looking wig.!

guest on

Kelly is a true, supportive friend. Kudos to her!

dee on

Now that’s a great friend.

mindy on

As a survivor who was diagnosed with breast cancer in my 30′s, I find it insulting when someone shaves their head to “support” cancer patients. It minimizes what we go through. You are not sharing our experience by being bald. It may look like the major thing we go through to outsiders, but it is not the big deal of our ordeal. Try having your breast cut off, going through premature menopause, having your veins turn brown and your cognitive function diminsh from chemo; THEN you’re sharing in the experience.

Rose McGinnis on

What a great friend. Kellie i have always loved your music. I think you are a wonderful friend. my prays and thoughts are with you and your friend. god will take of your friend. she is in good hands. love to all.

Kellie You are amazing!! Your friend is lucky to have you by her side. Best of luck!!!

Love you more than ever Kellie!

Kathy on

This made me tear up but not because of what Kelly did, it’s the people putting her down. Unless you go thru cancer you don’t know how it affects you. Things that didn’t mean much before cancer means so much after. You have people telling you what you have to do. That was the hardest part for me. Doctors, nurses, specialists all tell you what you need to do. So Kelly shaving her head is an act of love and honor. My husband and son shaved their heads. My hair came back in curly then found lung cancer and shaved my head the second time. So now I’m bald again. But it will grow back. I’ll pray for you Summer, and Kelly God bless you!!

Jenn on

God bless you Summer…moving story.

Paul G on

Kudos to Kellie! My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in Feb and is getting close to being finished with chemo. Her hair was well below her waist and when the time came, she had it cut off and then I shaved her head and I shaved mine too. I know what that means to Summer, to have a “real” friend like Kellie and we wish you both the very best!

Lori B on

God Bless Kellie for her heroic kindness, I have a Son in remission from Leukemia, We have 2 more years of treatment left. But he didnt loose all his hair, it thinned out alot. But if he had wanted me to shave mine I would have also. Good luck & God bless you Summer. & Kellie.

Having battled breast cancer over the last year (dx at 39, chemo first, then surgery, followed by radiation), I think what Kellie did is amazing. I wish Summer the absolute best in beating this disease. There definitely needs to be some review of the “age” requirements regarding mammograms.

This was my story last June at age 36! Double mastectomy in July 2011 and cancer free 8-10-11! Just had my one year anniversary and my final reconstruction surgery! This was an awesome show of support and I know from experience that support like that is what Kellie’s friend will need to get her through this battle! I’ve always been a fan but this makes me so proud to see and so thankful to be a survivor!

Karen Davis on

What a great friend!!!! Summer I am 45 and going through my second battle with breast cancer. I have lost my hair twice and really it’s no big deal in the grand scheme of things. Kudos to you for having the mastectomy. I did the same two years ago. I too have a lenghty family history. Please feel free to contact me. I’m not sure if you are local but I live in Asheboro NC and my husband’s family is in Albemarle. Because of that I have kept up with Kellie since American Idol and must say she has just won a whole new level of respect!!!! Hang in there my sister in pink :) p.s. you totally rock bald!!

Erin Davison on

I love the story about Kellie Pickler and Summer Miller. I was diagnosed with Large B Cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in July and I am finishing my second round of chemo this week. I shaved my head two weeks ago, once my hair started falling out. It was a liberating experience, and I am going more bald than wearing hats or wigs. My husband finds me extremely sexy with my shaved head and I want to empower other women, who are living through cancer, that bald is beautiful!! WTG Kellie, you are a wonderful friend!!!

Constance Fry on

Kelly, I knew your down home style was lost on American Idol, but it got you noticed by the record companies. Women are such strong role models and you are one of them to many young ladies, including my daugter (Sydney, age 10) and she was so impressed with what you did she is now considering cutting her hair after it grows some more to donate to locks of love. You are such a great influence for kids and parents and young women alike…….and I am proud that you are one of my daughters role models!! I am a breast cancer survivor!! I could NOT disagree with Mindy more!!! A friend of mine was going to shave her head for me and I would not let her. Yes, it is invigorating after you shave you head but it is a scary road ahead. Even though the chemo feels like it is making you worse off out IS making you better. Kellie shaving her head is just saying that she is there for a friend and there to support her…good times and bad. Mindy, you need to find a support group our confide in someone. After I was all done I ended up having to talk to a therapist. It changed my way of thinking. Life is too short. Savor every moment. Xoxo

I always thought that Kellie seemed like a sweet down to earth girl. While I watched her on American Idol I was not a big fan…..until now. What a friend. My wife just went through everything Summer went through. I shaved my head with her when the time came, but being a guy I never thought it was a big deal. For Kellie to do it just amazes me and she seemed more than happy to. It’s a horrible disease and the more cheerleaders and support you have the better recovery goes. I’ll be praying for Summer during her chemo. Chemo is not a lot of fun and she’ll need her friends more than ever. I hate cancer of all kinds.

I happen to be a real fan of Kelly’s from when she was on American Idol, I find her to be delightful & real, nothing phony about her! This was a true act of love! She was on Ellens show & I am so angry with Ellen for her show of cruelty & disregard for Kelly’s feelings and how she humilliated her on her show that day by insisting on shaving her initials in the back of Kellys head! Ellen made a total mess of the beautiful job that the lady had done and Kelly kept telling her just so she couldn’t see it!! Ellen kept doing more and more till it was on the side of Kelly’s head. It was disgraceful, she should be ashamed of herself for embarassing Kelly like that!!

I have not found many blogs that deliver such consistently readable and interesting content as is on offer here, you deserve the time it takes to express my admiration at your hard work. Many thanks.

Should the commenters of this blog aspire to receive backlinks then they might want to at least have the sense to try and post a themed and readable comment. All comment spam does is maybe hurt your SEO attempts and generates worthless backlinks. The only way to behave is to make friends with other bloggers who have blogs of a similar niche and generate genuine targeted traffic by making a well thought comment. I hope future commenters might even realise this before posting below me, I will not be holding my breath.
