We admit that when we first noticed this shoe becoming a thing, we were hesitant to recommend it. After all, cowboy boots can be tough to pull off without looking like you got lost on your way to the rodeo.

But since they’re slated to be huge for fall (and we do love the kicks!), we called on celeb stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliott to find out how to rock the tricky trend — and look as effortlessly cute as Anne Hathaway (who’s wearing Justin Boots) and Camila McConaughey.

Here’s the key, according to Current and Elliott: choose a style that hits at mid-calf. “The lower the shaft of the boot, the better it’s going to look on your leg,” the duo tells PEOPLE. “Camila’s boot height is really flattering and easy to wear.” Choose something higher and yes, it may look more authentic, but you run the risk of looking stumpy.

To avoid coming off as costume-y, be sure to offset the booties with something flirty and slightly girlie. “Make the cowboy boot the only Western-inspired piece in your outfit,” recommend Current and Elliott, who dress stars like Mandy Moore, Sophia Bush and Emma Roberts. “To keep it feminine, pair the boots with a dress or flippy skirt.” In other words, leave that 10-gallon hat and the leather chaps at home.

So, to recap: mid-calf cowboy boots + a cute dress = a great look for fall. Count us in. Tell us: Will you be trying this trend anytime soon?
