Plus-Size Model Excited to Inspire Fashion’s Next Generation

Aussie Robyn Lawley has a lingerie campaign, covered Vogue Italia last year and is one of the newest faces of Ralph Lauren. She also happens to be a size 10 (update: actually a 12/14 in the U.S.), considered a plus size in today’s fashion world.

“I had to go through my own self-love, self-hate to get to where I am,” the 23-year-old tells PEOPLE. “It took me years to watch other plus-size models be so confident with themselves. But then I realized that I could use my voice to be a positive role model for girls. When I found plus-size modeling, it was such a relief to be just me.”

At age 16, Lawley entered a modeling competition, eventually signing with an agency at 19. Now, she’s a Wilhelmina model, traveling the globe to shoot ads with some of fashion’s biggest names.

“It feels really good,” she says of her recent success. “I feel it’s been a really long time coming, but it feels like it was meant to happen now.”

In her earlier days, Lawley admits she was pressured to lose weight. “I was told I’d be a huge success,” she says. “I was told to eat less, exercise more. But the thing with my body is that I’m big-boned; I have broad shoulders, I’m really tall, have big hips — it’s just not my body. And I love food! I don’t want to give it up for something that would make me unhappy.”

Indeed; the model runs a mouth-watering food blog, full of photos of her kitchen creations and on-set snacks. “It’s a nice hobby; it challenges me and I get to do my food photography, which I love doing,” she shares.

Inspired by “strong, not-too-skinny” models of the 1990s, like Linda Evangelista, Lawley hopes she can be a source of inspiration for others, as well. “I do try to respond to comments I receive on Facebook,” she says. “Some girls struggle with confidence, so it’s nice to be able to talk to them.”

She’s excited to have her body representing the “real woman,” too. “When I signed on as a plus-size model my friends and family were shocked because I’m a normal girl,” she says. “My friends are my size. They see their bodies in mine, so it gives them hope. They can see me in a lingerie ad and say, ‘I want to buy that lingerie, I’ll look amazing.’ If people can relate to me, it’s a good thing.”

And if modeling doesn’t work out, Lawley can always fall back on a second career in the food business.

“I hope I’m one of those people that if it doesn’t keep getting better, I will switch careers,” she says. “I can see myself really enjoying opening restaurants, doing cooking shows.”

But for now, she’s a model on a mission. “I genuinely want companies to take notice and start being more realistic about who their customer really is,” she adds. “I hope to keep breaking down those barriers.” Hear more from Lawley in an upcoming issue of PEOPLE.

She looks great.
I’m a big fan of all sizes of models, from thin (I’m a size 1 so easier for me to relate to) to average – plus (for others to relate to). My main concern is that they show HEALTHY women. Not underweight and not overweight but healthy, and beautiful being who they are.

She says it right in the article…she’s tall and big boned (i know some use that term incorrectly but there are such things larger and smaller body frames) so a size 10 is probably perfectly fit and healthy for her. Maybe on someone 5’2 and a small frame a size 10 would be plus size. I agree, this woman does not face the same clothing challenges as most women shopping for plus size clothing. Still glad to see a model thats not a skeleton though!

I cannot seriously believe that a size 10 is considered a PLUS SIZE….that is what is wrong with the fashion industry today…they think that uber-skinny models are it…It is definitely sending the wrong message to all the young girls today! My hat is off to Robyn…You go Girl!!!!

Hey, I just found out I’m plus sized!!!

Ridiculous. She is a very pretty girl with real curves…I dont think Plus sized is an acurate description. Its actually very bothersome that society considers this as plus sized…

10 is a plus size?! Good grief. Soon 8 and 6 will be plus size too at this rate.

Ok….so everyone’s agreed that this beautiful girl is NOT a plus size. When is the industry, the people who are responsible for this mindset, going to wake up and get real and help change the Image damage they have done? I think it’s really sad that this model believes that she has a plus sized body.

Something wrong with our society if this woman in a size 10 is plus sized. She looks gorgeous and fitter than most women I see daily.

Apparently she used to be a 16 during her career but has since go down to a 10 through physical exercise and healthy food choices. I think she is gorgeous and slowly changing the fashion industry from super thin to more of a variety of beauty – which comes in all shapes and sizes. Its really sad to know that anything over a size 6 is considered plus sized in the modeling world. I think it should be consistent with what is actually considered plus sized.

She’s absolutely gorgeous … but that’s a “plus size” model?

In the normal world a 10 is not a plus size but in the magizine/model world it is a plus size. Remember when it was all over magazines, pictures of Jennifer love hewett in a biniki and how fat they were saying she was and she was a size 4. All magazines & stores ads are of models who are a size 0. it’s will be nice to see someone be a normal size model so when you go to buy the outfit, your not surprised how different it looks on you then in the picture.
