How Baking Soda Fits Into Julia Roberts's Beauty Routine

Julia Roberts received one of her best beauty tips ever from her grandfather.

“I brush [my teeth] with baking soda,” she tells InStyle in the magazine’s September issue. “[My grandfather] would put a big heaping mound of it on his toothbrush. He had only one cavity in his entire life.”

Because the actress is so loved for that big, sparkling smile, she’s sure to take care of it. “Sometimes that’s all I do as far as a regimen goes,” the busy mom says of tooth brushing. “Look, I’m happy if I have on moisturizer and ChapStick! When you’re dressing three people besides yourself, something has to fall away. I’ve learned to always have a big pair of dark sunglasses within arm’s reach before going out.”

When she does have time to primp, Roberts relies on a tip from the late makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin: “‘Mascara, mascara, mascara!'” she recalls, naming LancĂ´me’s Hypnose as a favorite. “It just makes you look like you’ve had a good nap.”

Would she ever rely on Botox or plastic surgery for the same effect? Probably not. “I’m pro whatever works for you,” she says of such procedures. “For me, at this point, I’m clinging to my good genes and lots of hugs and kisses from my husband.” Hear more from Roberts in the September issue of InStyle, on newsstands Friday. Tell us: What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Christy Brinkley said that she exfoliates every day with the roughest stuff she can find. I use Mediterranean sea salt on my face when I shower. Also oil of okay to follow, no sun and lots of water helps too. I’m 40 and everyone guesses me at 27-28.

I have very dry skin and those little bumps you sometimes get on the outside of your arms, and I have found that using a simple plastic scrubbie that you’d scrub your pots and pans with works best for me. I take a gentle soap like Caress or Dove, soap the scrubbie well, then exfoliate my arms. I just press hard enough to feel the circulation, and when I rinse off, my arms are as smooth as a baby’s hiney. Then I slather on a thick Aveeno dry skin cream. I’ve paid as much as $7.99 for a loofah-type exfoliator, but I pay less than $2.00 for FOUR of these plastic scrubbies at the dollar store. And I get a better result! I exfoliate like this every couple of days to keep my skin looking good. I use a pair of exfoliating gloves that you can buy in WalMart on my face, using the same procedure. The scrubbie is a little too rough for the tender skin on the face, I think. Beauty tricks do not have to be expensive or complicated to get the job done

Really? Well, ive seen whiter teeth than hers, my sister has very white teeth, and she just uses regular cheap toothpaste, and she doesn’t have any cavities and has never had any. Ive heard of people using baking soda in their hair, but i dont remember why.

Just want to start off saying I hate Laura who’s 40 and looks 27-28!! UGH! :)
Props to Julia for not being a slave to makeup. It’s much better to be a slave to your kids!

This is from the same woman who proudly doesn’t shave her arm pits?? Come on people. We don’t need to be slaves to name brands but her dentist is a very well known name who gave and gives her that million dollar smile…. Not baking soda!!

I use baking soda in my hair once a week. It removes the build up. And I also use to as face scrub. It works great on both!
