How Baking Soda Fits Into Julia Roberts’s Beauty Routine

Julia Roberts received one of her best beauty tips ever from her grandfather.

“I brush [my teeth] with baking soda,” she tells InStyle in the magazine’s September issue. “[My grandfather] would put a big heaping mound of it on his toothbrush. He had only one cavity in his entire life.”

Because the actress is so loved for that big, sparkling smile, she’s sure to take care of it. “Sometimes that’s all I do as far as a regimen goes,” the busy mom says of tooth brushing. “Look, I’m happy if I have on moisturizer and ChapStick! When you’re dressing three people besides yourself, something has to fall away. I’ve learned to always have a big pair of dark sunglasses within arm’s reach before going out.”

When she does have time to primp, Roberts relies on a tip from the late makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin: “‘Mascara, mascara, mascara!’” she recalls, naming Lancôme’s Hypnose as a favorite. “It just makes you look like you’ve had a good nap.”

Would she ever rely on Botox or plastic surgery for the same effect? Probably not. “I’m pro whatever works for you,” she says of such procedures. “For me, at this point, I’m clinging to my good genes and lots of hugs and kisses from my husband.” Hear more from Roberts in the September issue of InStyle, on newsstands Friday. I use baking soda and washing soda for so many things. Washing soda for dishwasher and HE laundry. Baking soda and water for shampoo and cider vinegar and water for conditioner. The baking soda and vinegar rinses for your hair don’t strip it of its natural oils. It also helps with dry scalp, my Dad even uses it for scalp psoriasis. Baking soda is good for brushing your teeth, even though it doesn’t taste that good. Also, a tsp of baking soda in 1 cup of water can help relieve symptoms of UTI until you get to your doctor.

This is not news. Brushing your teeth with baking soda has been around forever. Let me guess, she also uses toilet paper to wipe herself

Man there are so many haters out there!
You ladies should be ashamed of your selfs!

Not so true…I know she uses for sure Mary Kay products!Whenever she’s in Montreal she needs MK…so she may use Lancôme’s Hypnose but i was wondering if she says it just because Lancôme gives her everything for free…nice try though…

I used to have problems with my skin (and not the light break outs that just require cleansing or proactive) and my dermatologist put me on amoxicilian and now I don’t have any pores! Its fabulous (before all the people start with the over use of antibiotics, Cystic acne was ruining my life, this gave me back my life and skin were all my make-up artists are in love with….smooth and alabaster!) Decide for yourself what is right.

@sharon, I agree with you 100%. Plus it’s also been around for a hundred years that baking soda is too abrasive to use regularly, just asked my dental hygienist last week about it again to double check, as I had been using it once in a while lately. I swear it works though, and I am going to try to use it more often. I think it really helped whiten my yellowy teeth from using it just a few times. I am afraid if I use any OTC chemical products I will end up with sensitive teeth, which my hygienist also warned about as a side effect of using them too much.

Gee this is what most people do

Nina, the little bumps on outer arms (and occasionally cheeks) are called keratosis pilaris. Excess keratin production. They make a special cream for it, but it’s so friggin expensive. Anyway, my derm said that using anything scrubby on it will make it worse.
