FIRST LOOK: Natalie Portman’s Ethereal White Wedding Dress

08/06/2012 at 04:30 PM ET

Natalie Portman Wedding DressFameFlynet

When Natalie Portman needed a wedding dress appropriate for a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony in California’s chilly Big Sur, the actress called on her friends. Her fashion friends, that is.

A source tells PEOPLE that Portman tied the knot in a dress by Rodarte, the label run by Portman’s longtime pals, sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy. The frothy white A-line frock, left, was tea length, and featured a sheer overlay that covered the star’s chest and arms. She accessorized the simple gown with nude shoes, a veil and what appeared to be a floral crown.

The actress has been a fan of the young line for several years, wearing Rodarte creations on press tours for The Other Boleyn Girl, Black Swan and for the 2011 Oscars, where she nabbed the best actress statuette.

Portman and dancer Benjamin Millepied wed Saturday night in a moonlit ceremony attended by family (including their 14-month-old son, Aleph) and friends, such as Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner and Macaulay Culkin.

The pair met when Portman was filming Black Swan in the fall of 2009 (coincidentally, Rodarte designed her iconic tutu for that film) and announced their engagement and pregnancy in December 2010. Tell us: What do you think of Portman’s wedding dress?

Horrible dress! She looks like she’s 8 years old!

AvaNubrock on

She is so beautiful, but this might be the worst wedding dress of all time. It doesn’t even look like it fits her properly.

Fashionwidget on

Reblogged this on Fashionwidget and commented:
She looks like Natalie Portman which is great, the worst that could happen would be to try so hard to look like someone else on your wedding day. Congrats newlyweds.

hodge on

No. Just, no. This is definitely not an ICONIC look that anyone is likely to emulate. If she can’t make it look good, who could? Yup, no one.

classy on

I love it. Natalie looks classy. I welcome a return to modest wedding dresses.

Shea on

I think she is pregnant.

Paulette Loren on

money doesn’t buy taste.

ella on

eek! She’s so pretty, he’s so handsome, but I hope it was nicer in person because the dress sure doesn’t photograph well.

freddy on

Mazel tov……

freddy on

Vive la Marier …..

Usef Ali on

I Love Natalie Hershlag but This marriage will not last because it was doomed the day she met him. If you think I’m wrong watch, but hey she don’t care so long as the camera is focused on her in spotlight.

Purplepooch on

It’s her mother’s wedding dress. It is often a tradition to do this and the style would fit the time. AND that sourceless quote mentioned elsewhere on the web on the fact that ‘[Natalie] may not even wear a new dess.’

teegirl91 on

i love her , but the dress is a disastrous !!

bree on

Doesn’t fit well.

Jaa on

It’s not her mother’s wedding dress- it was designed by Rodarte– the Mulleavy sisters.

Laurie on

Refreshing to see something different than the oh-so-tired strapless look that we always see. I love the fact that she is confident to be an original…I think it suits her wedding perfectly!

mochababe73 on

Natalie looks like more like the flower girl.

really?? on

ew ew ew. looks like a little girl dress –where’s the patent white leather Mary Jane shoes with the straps? There are so many gorgeous dresses, this one is already forgotten. A simple white silk gown with a slight train would’ve been stunning at Big Sur….sigh.

Sarah on

The dress? Not the greatest not the worst. I like the bottom half the top half doesn’t fit her. Second I have an issue with the article. I’m sorry but how is it “ironic” that the people who made her wedding gown also designed her tutu? Seriously people misuse that word all the time its so irritating!

Kathleen Sauer on

One never sees her smiling so broadly… I’ll bet in this shot she just caught sight of Aleph! But I agree… hopefully, at a different angle, the dress looks better than here.
Hope they’ll be happily wed for a long time.

Gina on

This wedding dress is a refreshing change from the monotonous strapless wedding gowns that have predominated the past decade and been flattering on maybe .01 per cent of the brides who have worn them.

CRH216 on

Wow I am surprised. It wouldn’t be so bad if it actually fit. Didn’t they do a fitting? Also the hair and headpiece doesn’t look right with the dress. Only way you get away wearing that is wearing something actually ethereal to go with it. maybe a something that draped or a dress with an empire waist and cap sleaves or something. It’s her wedding though and as long as she’s happy with it that’s all that matters.

Valani on

Hate d dress!!

Amattie on

Wow…what a dress… (gag)

Courtney on

that looks more like a tacky 80′s prom dress than a wedding dress. Natalie deffinately appears to be expecting again her face is chubbier than normal

Kristin on

wow, she could have done so much better. but she looks happy, and that is what’s most important!!

Erin on

would have looked better without the sleeves, I think.

Leslee on

This is a good example how proper fit can make all the difference. She has a great figure and this dress makes her look several sizes bigger. Anything that makes her smile like that is the perfect dress though.

Booka on

The sleeves look ill fitting and the garland around her forehead looks pretty bad, but she looks happy and that’s what really counts. A wedding dress is only one day; a marriage is (hopefully) forever.

Logan on

You mean “coincidentally,” not “ironically.” It drives me crazy that so few get that right.

Carole on

Doesn’t seem to fit properly and doesn’t look at all like a wedding gown. More like she is playing dress up. Think it would have looked better with 3/4 sleeves and no veil, just the flowers.

Katie on

She could have done something much better than this dress.. like everyone said it doesn’t suit her very well and her age just isn’t reflective of the dress well either.

Rhiannon on

She looks happy. The dress looks like it belongs on a flower girl more than a bride. Congrats to the couple!

catca on

I think she looks stunning.

DHayes on

Nice dress for a virgin bride under the age of 20. I think something more age appropriate would of been better.

Julie on

The dress wouldn’t have been so bad if she didn’t pair it with both the crown of flowers and a veil. If she kept it simple with just maybe a cuple f flowers than it would have looked soo much better. The dress is pretty but the accessories ruined it.

jack on

HORRIBLE LOOK

Jerzey on

U.G.L.Y.

Alicia on

I’m not going to pick apart her dress..it’s the happiest day of her life, she can wear whatever she wants. That said, I love the style of this dress. In this day of overly-sexy wedding dresses, it modest and lovely. Very Audrey but whimsical with the floral crown. I LOVE the fact she didn’t feel the need to wear towering heels. Embrace your height. Love the flats.

alex on

I dont think the dress is becoming. It is far too puffy but if she likes it then oh well.. She is a pretty lady regardless.

Sherron on

I think the dress looks great! It looks a lot better than the strapless dresses girls wear now. She looks beautiful in it!!

rebecca on

Looks like her first project from Home Ec. class circa 1962

sookie on

Looks like a First Communion dress but she looks happy and that’s what matters.

Laura Conlon on

It is a nice change from those strapless dresses that everyone wears now. She looks happy and that is all that matters.

Lois on

The dress was bad and she did look lovely. But the wedding was not kept quiet at all. It was told a month ago. You did announce it until now. Why didn”t have the weddimg somewhere else? Imstead of where she live. New york would been a better place to have it at . What was the rush anyway. Thete was no plannimg at all. She did it all herself with no help. She walked around like she wad not going to get married at all. There was nothimg too much said about it at all. It was a cheap weddding !

linda on

thank goodness someone had the nerve to wear a dress that doesn’t look like she is trolling or asks for payment up front. no boobs hanging out or shoulders bare where anyone can see all her tattoos (classy!). don’t know if ms. portman has tattoos but just making a point.

me on

his last name is Millapied like the bug?

I don’t know why I even responded Natalie Portman is a phony.

Star on

Horrible. She looks like a little girl doing Communion. She’s so pretty she could’ve made a beautiful bride in a different dress.

Star on

She looks like she’s doing Communion. Not a fan of it.

Jennifer on

That’s a horrible dress..really, really horrible.

nisha on

Not bad. If she likes it, who am I to say its a horrible dress. Its her special day, not mines

Kim on

She’s a lovely young woman, but the fit of this dress is poor. The sleeves look a bit long and baggy, and ‘tea length’ is not flattering on anyone.

Tiffany on

Not pretty, at all. But it doesn’t mstter what we think. She liked it and that’s what matters.

Daphne on

I agree she looks like she is eight years old. More like a first communion dress. But she looks so happy.

John Sadler on

Absolutely the WORST wedding dress in all of eternity! She could have probably MADE something better than that…

Suze on

Horrible! Makes her look dumpy and frumpy, and what’s with those ballet slippers?? Is she channeling her Black Swan role? Natalie, you jumped the shark on this one my dear.

Winter on

No heels on her wedding day?! Oh my gosh. There is a first for everything.

PB on

I think the dress is ok. Would have liked to see her in a long slimming dress to show off her pretty figure. But her hair & that flower halo is for a flower girl… Lol… If she had it up with some lil curlys around her face, & a pretty necklace on then it might have looked right on her.

Mr.Mint on

Well.. Its not actually her most flattering photo compared to most of her perfect ones.. Im sure the dress was well thought of given her taste. She looked so happy like a kid in Coney Island though
.. Which should be a good thing.

Maria on

So many irrelevent opinions on here about HER dress! Individuality is what sets her apart from the rest of the look alikes in this world. Congrats to her! :)

Kate on

It’s not my style, but I think she looks beautiful! She looks so obviously happy. I do think the dress would be much better if just the sleeves were fitted to her arms. They look way to baggy on her.

whatever on

ummmm, no

Emily on

Is she the bride or the flower girl?

Jen on

Ok, apparently money will not buy you good taste in fashion.

Terry on

She is stunning, but the dress doesn’t do her justice

Sarah on

It looks like a flower girl dress or a really bad bridesmaid dress. It might not be too bad if it didn’t have the sheer overlay, though. Natalie wears gorgeous clothes, but this wasn’t really her best choice. :(

Daffygrams on

The important thing here is SHE loved the dress. Everyone else’s opinions don’t matter.

ESTHER STARKMAN on

THE BRIDE IS BEAUTIFUL, AND BEN IS GOOD LOOKING.
THEY BOTH HAD A HAPPY FACE, THAT IS WHAT COUNTS.

Anabel on

It looks like a first communion dress.

Pyrochic on

That dress reminds me of something from the 80s. But hey it’s her wedding day and her choice. So it really doesn’t matter if anyone hates it or not.

Kimberley on

I’m not bothered by the dress. What bothers me is that it looks like the photographer had to climb a tree to get this shot. Creepy. :S

Amy on

It looks like she is going to her confirmation!

Tracy on

It’s not an appealing dress, but then again, this picture is not very flattering. However, it was her decision, and as long as she was happy to wear it, that’s all that matters.

Pyrochic on

@ purplepooch.

Did you read the story. The dress is not her mothers. It is new and was made by Rodarte. Where did you get the info that she wore her mother’s dress?

R U Kidding Me on

Who cares what she wore as long as she and her husband are happy that’s all that matters. And, judging by the smile on her face, she looks very happy.

Best Wishes to the happy couple!

Anon on

The dress is lovely, but it wasn’t the right one for her small frame and 5’3″ height. Pairing it with flats, the ensemble unfortunately makes her look like a large child.

km on

This would have been lovely if it was a sleeveless gown. The sheer sleeves ruin it. Ditch the crown of flowers and a simple cluster of flowers on a loose chignon would have made her look age appropriate instead of looking like a 2nd grade girl making her First Communion. And People got it wrong- this dress is hardly “ethereal.”

Krista on

She looks beautiful, what’s up with all of the negative comments?

MiaSara on

Ethereal? Matronly and dowdy but certainly not ethereal.

Brandy on

Natalie was herself and not someone else on her special wedding day .She looked fantastic and down to earth .I wish them both happiness and a long marriage together through the years .I loved the simple dress and flowers in her hair .Why do people think every movie star has to be in a way out dress and $$$$$$$$$$ ceremony ,they did it their way .

Kathy on

you know if you have nothing nice to say about SOMEONE ELSE’S WEDDING, dont say anything. Have some manners will you? Its HER wedding.

CO on

It’s boring…she could have done better. Her Oscar dress was much more elegant than this get up.

Jen on

I like it, don’t love it. Sooo glad she is not going with the boobs first look that so many are using now and looks cheap. The look suits her and her beliefs. Most importantly, she looks very happy. God bless them.

or on

love it!gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guest on

I think that all the negative comments are useless. It’s HER dress SHE picked it, so she likes it.

Dania on

Natalie is very pretty but when i first saw this dress i thought it looked a bit like a communion dress.

Elizabeth on

I think her dress is appropriate for a traditional religious wedding and I believe Natalie is honoring her parents by dressing modestly. I also believe she asked for a dress that would not be snug and would allow her to move comfortably. This is not a beauty contest, nor a movie premier. She didn’t sell her pictures, nor did she make her wedding public.

Mary on

The dress is really sweet. Everyone posting negative comments is just not used to seeing someone dressed without their bustline hangin out, or wearing a super tight fitting dress. To me, this shows that Natalie takes her vows seriously and was not looking for the spotlight.

ann brown on

I like it, sweet and simple! Best wishes!

JS on

Don’t like the dress at all. Definitely would have axed the flower crown as well. It just doesn’t look right and doesn’t go with the style of dress either. Isn’t it interesting the choices people make when they have literally everything within the realm of possibility to select from? However, CONGRATULATIONS to the couple! :)

fanofboardwalkempire on

Natalie is so beautiful and I am sorry to say that I don’t find this dress very pretty or appealing on her at all. It is simple and sweet but not that great dress I thought I would see!

Amazed on

It doesn’t matter what we think. What matters is that Natalie chose it because she liked it and it was appropriate for the occasion. So that being said I wish them many blessings on their future together.

Pam on

Every bride is beautiful and Natalie is no exception. But she could have done a bit better on the dress.

Sharon on

She looks so happy and that is all that counts, but I would have to agree with other post on here that the dress does not look right on her.

Daria on

I’m thrilled she looks so happy and is married to someone who so obviously adores her. The dress, however, does her no favours. Mazel tov to the newlyweds.

Ginny on

What is this? My Big Fat Greek Wedding?

Kali on

I appreciate wanting to cover up – chilly or otherwise – too many wedding dresses these days show way too much skin on the top. But as wedding dresses go … um … no. Looks like the organza dresses young girls used to wear to church. Longer skirt, better hemline, a bit more lace here and there .. needs help.

DK on

She is so beautiful but that dress is horrendous… and white? come on…

ImALadyToo on

I think that she must have worn this for religious reasons, because it is really, really modest. It doens’t do anything for her, because she is really beautiful, so think how bad it would look on the average woman.

Jasmine on

When bad wedding gowns happen to good people. However, it doesn’t matter how any of us feel because it wasn’t “Our” wedding.

Shari J on

I don’t like the dress AT ALL

annie on

HID EE OUS dress. YIKES. Worst dress ever. looks like she’s hiding a bun in the oven maybe?? Why else would it be so baggy and loose since she has such a good figure….WOW

Unknown on

Natalie’s dress is ok. Seems too young for her BUT more power to her and congrats to the happy couple.

Sally on

I think the dress would have been prettier had it been a formal straight skirt, no A-line. I’ve seen prettier dresses on the red carpet.

Kristina on

I think that she should have a strapless dress and a long train. That dress looks like a bridesmaids dress. Not a good choice. But she is pretty!

sonia on

Glad she is married..horrid dress, mostly because of the fit.

Peque on

She looks fat!

Elise on

Not impressed, looks like she’s a junior bridesmaid at the royal wedding.

Xoxo on

Horrible dress…….

Mimi on

She is beaming, such joy on her face.

deb on

Beautiful!

Arianne on

I cannot believe it!!!!!!!! what kind of dress is that??? I mean, may she just wanted a private and not over the top wedding, ok I get it, but that’s not excuse to wear something like that!!!

psy on

the smile is real , and thats the main thing

Kiki on

Looks like she is ready to make her first communion

karen on

I suppose if she did just the veil and no flower ring the entire thing would work but i am not liking it – on anyone :)

Kit Lang on

Looks like a Christening dress or a child-bride. Bizzare…

vampkel on

yuk

vampkel on

yuk.

Bcliles on

Sorry but that dress looks like something Hassie McCoy would wear.(Look it up).

Mimi on

This is the ugliest wedding dress I have ever seen on a celebrity. She always looks so beautiful but honestly…..what was she thinking with this creation? I know she was going for a modest look but this is just too much. Sorry girl!

Tasha on

OMG…I can’t believe you guys are busy looking at the dress that you totally missed the huge smile on her face. She looks so happy at HER wedding in the dress she wanted. Congrats!

Sarah on

Wow. This is the creepiest, stalkiest wedding photo ever. What did the photographer have to do to get this shot? Crouch under a bush 5 blocks away? Yuck.

doodlebug on

I love it. Finally someone who is not trying to show off their boobs during a wedding ceremony! So tired of the overdone strapless dresses. Bet the fabric was beautiful in person. Not a good photo, but I really applaude her individuality.

Eliana on

omg, ew…wtf is that? sorry, I really thought she would have picked something more beautiful and not look like she spent an hour getting ready because that’s what it looks like…I don’t know what THAT is, looks like a communion dress…and what’s with the head piece?

Lisa on

I love her but this looks like a flower’s girl’s dress…not the bride’s dress. A little too young looking.

annmarie on

I hope the color of her dress isn’t white!!

Guest on

I don’t like that dress on her, I’ve seen her wear much more beautiful gowns on the red carpet. This I feel ages her. Disappointing. Still wish her well and a long and happy marriage.

CC on

Don’t like the dress. It’s horrible. She looks like a 7-8 year old bridesmaid.

Anonymous on

I find Natalie to be extremely beautiful and usually approve of her fashion choices. However, I’m not lovin’ this wedding dress. It just doesn’t seem to flatter her properly. But hey, if that’s what she’s comfortable in and likes, go right ahead! Every bride has the right to wear what she wants on her special day.

Jenny on

Blah, blah, blah! Is that really the best she could do? It looks more like a little kid’s flower girl dress!

Audrey, CA on

YAWNNNN

Audrey, CA on

Ethereal???? That’s about as ethereal as a brick wall ! I had a dress like that in Junior High back in the 1040′s. With her money, she could have had a beautiful lace or a pure silk, but that thing???? YUK

Sun on

Beautiful but the wedding dress look like it’s for 8-12 years old little girls.

Shea on

I’m telling you, she looks pregnant. Seems like this dress has become an icon in itself. If the dress was a person it would baby talk and skip through daisy’s in grassy meadows. If I wore her dress my grandmother would commit me! If I got married in this dress my husband would not have sex with me.

Peg Lyons on

Very unattractive, it makes her look heavy and it looks homemade. Goodness, she had her pick and she picked this?

Bacall on

It’s, um, very modest if that was her goal, but not very flattering. I’ve seen far more flattering and modest dresses on other brides, but it’s her wedding, so if she liked it, that’s all that matters. And she’s beautiful enough to elevate the dress, if not completely redeem it.

Sony on

That is the ugliest wedding dress I have ever seen. I like Natalie Portman as an actress, but I sure do hate the wedding dress she selected. It looks like a communion dress, like she is 13-years old. Natalie in that dress screams, “I need a stylist!”

Jen on

Natalie looks so happy! I am thrilled to NOT see a strapless wedding dress on her. And/or form-fitted with a mermaid hem – overdone to death. This dress has a sweet, retro feel to it and reminds me of my Aunt’s precious wedding dress from 1960. Very Audrey Hepburn.

Astacia on

She looks like she is going to her first communion! BLECH! I guess even with all the money in the world you can still look horrible. Poor thing

Shea on

Please stop saying that the dress looks Audrey Hepburn-esc. Audrey had a better sense of style and sophistication and would not wear a child’s dress to her wedding.

DKK on

That has got to be the ugliest wedding dress I have ever seen. Poor Natalie. Whatever made her choose that one? Well, if she and hubby like it, that’s really what matters, but seriously, the dress is a total disaster.

sabin on

those sleeves make her arms look like an 80′s wrestler ( leg of mutton). you can be modest and have a sleeved wedding dress thats tastefully done and most imp well fitted specially if you can afford couture. that hemline is getting outdated as we speak. what a pity coz she is lovely and dresses well usually. dont let your friends design for you! OY!

Guest on

I think that since it was a traditional ceremony, the dress is appropriate, but it definitely could have been tailored more!! She looks happy, though, which is what matters!!

sue on

WOW ! What a disaster some dress

Ivanna Greencard on

Guess what….i don’t care who made the dress she looks B.A.D. period.

Ugh! on

She looks like she is dressed for a part in Alice In Wonderland. Doesn’t look “adult appropriate”, especially for her wedding. Different strokes for different folks.

James Hoffa on

Webster’s — Ethereal: “marked by unusual delicacy or refinement.” What exactly what Ethereal or even unusual about that dress? Looks pretty boring to me.

James Hoffa on

Oh, and I love the word “white” in the headline. How often is a wedding dress “not white.” Derp.

Rebecca on

Not a comment worthy photo. Was the photographer hiding in the trees? Show us a different view, this one stinks!

joojo gregg on

all covered up and she had a baby out of wedlock . I hate when people act like that. One extreme to the next just act normal.

Cassidy on

Yikes; Why the sleeves- Why?

Kiah on

Ntalie Portman is such a beautiful woman. What was she thinking when she said OK to this blah sack to wear on her wedding day??? The Mulleavy Sisters are no friends to Natalie. Proving this by allowing her to walk down the aisle in this Rodarte 3rd grade sewing project. Modesty pairs with elegance quite beautifully. Sadly, modest frump is what we have here.

Heather on

I think it’s absolutely beautiful and definitely her.

Beth on

Horrible on many levels..Horrible headpiece, Horrible Hair, Horrible dress…ew.

Colleen on

Sorry, I don’t like the dress. I really dislike the sleeves. Sheer sleeves like that shouldn’t be baggy.

Deb on

Who cares what I think of the dress! It’s her special day and all that counts is what she thought of the dress!

cindy on

i would have loved to see her in a prettier dress but she looks so happy that I think we can forgive her this times. LoL

Denise on

what a ugle dress, hope she is happier that it…

Oh My on

I’m proud of her for keeping her tradition–agree with v–worst dress of all time–worst wedding dress too, oh Natalie!!! She’s very happy so maybe she doesn’t care? Good luck Doll–please get R. Zoe to help you next time–with the vegan theme, yes!! Muah

Jen on

Shea – Audrey’s wedding dress worn to marry Mel Ferrer was described as a ‘tea length frock worn with a floral wreath in her hair’. I realize that dress and Natalie’s are different but there are similarities. The wedding dress Audrey wore in Funny Face shares the same simplicity w/o sleeves as well as the lovely dress she wore to accept her Oscar for Roman Holiday. The other commonality would be both of the ladies minimalism. I love the detail, workmanship and fit of vintage dresses were I Natalie I would have searched for the perfect vintage dress to marry in if that’s the look I wanted. I did in fact were a Bianchi gown from the 50′s to marry my sweet hubby in 1997.

Kjjmac on

Paulette: you are right. it also does’t buy CLASS. I am so sick of these women who have one or more children,THEN decide to not only get married(that’s a novel idea) but to wear a white wedding dress. Now, a white wedding dress no longer symbolizes an innocent, pure woman. It demeans the symbol.Shame on her. Talented, beautiful actress, but classy? NOT.

Bennie on

She is usually so impeccably dressed, but this doesn’t seem to fit her properly. The top and the arms are especially badly fitted.

shieroc on

That dress is not cute.

T Cocrhan on

oh wow, this is not a pretty dress! not that my opinion matters, but shes worn such beautiful dresses on the “red carpet”, why oh why did she pick this dress to be married in?? i suppose thats the difference when you have a stylist dress you and when you pick out your own dress. all that matters is that she obviously loved dress

Emily on

She looks like a little girl in the 1970s making her first communion. lol

RTVLady on

I actually looked to see if this was a screen cap from a film she did wearing a first communion dress at age 12.

Sharon R on

Worried about modesty? Any other time hollywood types running around in backless and plunging necklines. Why now? This is more frumpy than fabulous. Sad since she is such a beautiful woman.

Maria on

Dress is not too nice, but she sure does look very happy. , so who cares.

Mona. on

I think she looks lovely.
Congratulations.
Thx.People Magazing for sharing this.

leslie on

hope she didn’t have to pay for that pile of mess-

Gabby on

Unimpressed. Another lacy unsructured whatever. Very disappointing for a woman with that much money and access to all things Haute Couture.

Denise on

To each their own, she would look beautiful in a potato sack. She looks very happy, best of luck!

Purplepooch on

It’s her mother’s wedding dress. It is often a tradition to do this and the style would fit the time. AND that sourceless quote mentioned elsewhere on the web on the fact that ‘[Natalie] may not even wear a new dess.’

ana on

OMG! The dress was up to the food served: HORRIBLE! Maybe she’s wearing someone’s First Communion dress! No taste at all!
@Freddy: If you can’t speak French why do you do it? You should have said: “Vive la mariée!” if you were just referring to Natalie or “Vive les mariés!” if you were referring to the couple. The same goes to the word fiancée (for a woman) and fiancé (for a man).

KIMBERLY HUFF on

Love it! Pretty and elegant! Yet comfortable and easy to have fun in later without tripping over a long train- great for a reception after! Non-traditional is always daring-apparently all the nay-sayers can’t think outside the box. She looks happy and it looks great on her! Anyone who doesn’t like it probably just likes cookie-cutter dresses that all look alike. I think it’s absolutely lovely!

blair on

the dress makes her look like a little kid…….

Lorin on

Natalie would look gorgeous in a paper bag, but, NO, that dress was definately not very flattering on her.

eva on

I love the idea of the dress. The modesty, the midninetees illusion look with the more moden simplcity but it just looks poorly executed. The tea length dress with the floral wreath looks very childish. More flower girl than bride.

Whatupsup on

Oh how cute… she’s the flower girl?

v bennett on

Just proves to show that money does not buy you taste or a decent dress. Where were her friends and family when she picked out this dress? She looks like an 8 year old on her way to her communion. SMH

Katers on

It looks like Little House on the Prairie and Woodstock mated, and then that child threw up on her.

Julia on

This is not “Ethereal.” This is First Communion.

lee on

It looks realy bad. Blessing them both.

Abbie on

I saw some other photos on another website and I thought she looked beautiful… Honestly I think this dress is so much better then Drew Barrymore’s wedding dress, talk about not fitting right, but I like that more woman are changing it up and not going for dress (aka strapless). Not that I don’t like that look, it is just nice to see some variety.

gdenise on

Where were her family and girlfriends when she picked out this horrible mess. It looks Horrible and she looks like a little girl playing a bad game of dress up.

Lorraine on

I think it’s appropriate considering Her religion requirements and the fact that the retro look is in. It’s a great color for her and fits what’s trending now. For those who don’t know fashion/bridal fashion, do the research on what’s trending. It’s cute!

Lucymay on

Oh, Natalie, that’s just not for you. What were you thinking?

Lucymay on

Purplepooch, did you even bother to read the story that goes with the picture?? If it was her mother’s dress, it would probably look better! It is not her mother’s dress; it’s a dress designed by Rodarte.

Poop on

Looks more like a first communion dress

Hoo on

I wouldn’t call it unadorned as unshaped…and why long sleeves in the middle of summer…anywhere? it looks like a borrowed first communion dress that someone else wore better. She does look very happy though.

Mary on

Wow. Worst dress ever. It makes her look pounds heavier and she needed EITHER a flower headband OR a big puffy veil. What a mess.

Frank N on

Natalie Portman could wear a burlap sack and still look good.

Keera on

It looks like a First Communion dress.

Jan on

It’s frumpy and doesn’t do her justice.
Maybe it looked better in real life.

Ran on

Total disappointment. Dressing for your body type is wedding dress 101…..what in the world happened here? Zero flattering elements, except maybe the color?! I think she is so beautiful….too bad the dress doesn’t accentuate that.

Lia on

@Sarah: I don’t think it says anywhere that it is “ironic” that the same designer did her dress and the Black Swan tutu. The article said the tutu was “iconic”.

Jane on

IMO, it looks like what Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge) wore, except a little shorter and a little later. Same with her, LMAO. Not something I’d wear, I don’t hate it but I wish she’d worn better necklace and shoes. Eh.

Kettir on

Not what I would picture as ethereal. Looks old fashioned to me.

jdub on

Frumpty dumpty! Designers at Rodarte are her friends? With friends like that, who needs enemies? Friends don’t let friends wear something like this…horrid!!!! Hopefully it looked better in person.

Lara on

The sleeves look like they’re too big and the dress looks boxy. I only nice thing about the dress is its modesty.

Gdubya on

I like everything but the sleeves! Love the flowers!

Sandy on

Stunning is right… that dress makes her look like a chubby linebacker. What a horrible thing to do to Natalie Portman!!!

Bella Reich on

Natalie looks like she is wearing her “first Holy Communion” dress….Ugh….I don’t have a problem with the modesty part but she looks like a little kid, not a grown woman who is an accomplished actress, mom and now a wife! Those 2 sisters who are designers need to look for another line of work!

jen on

Take the sleeves off. It would have made a bif difference in the dress if it would have been pretty cap sleeves or even no sleeves at all. Those sleeves make herlook large and blocky.

jaci on

wow natalie…..someone should have been honest w/you about that dress….

mbuki_dru on

Ugliest. Wedding. Dress. Ever.

All of them guys who are sad that Natalie Portman is married now will rethink that when they see this picture.

KJ on

She is so gorgeous. That dress is horrible. She looks happy, but seriously…out of any dress in the universe, what was she thinking?!

gyl on

She is so elegant and dresses beautifully albeit modestly, but this dress was too frumpy. I love the nod to the long sleeves, but it was not a good fit. I thought her stylist could have done a better job. I get the simplicity factor, but this was too much.

Karen Howard on

Well- I don’t care what anyone else thinks. Really! She’s Adorable, & she looks Sooo Happy. She’s Wearing It-It’s Her Wedding & As long as She Loves it-That Is All That Matters! Everyone has different tastes anyway & that makes life Interesting. Everyone Does Not Have To Like It. Go Natalie! And The Very Best Of Luck To Both Of You. : D

Jeanne on

Looks like a first communion dress for a kid!

girlfriend on

She looks a lot like Audrey Hepburn on her wedding day! I’m pretty sure Audrey had a very similar dress and floral wreath in her wedding with Mel Ferrer. Funny, because Natalie already looks a lot like Audrey.

OhYesIDid on

Jesus Christ, who cares?!

Julie on

I love Natalie Portman and I can understand a modest dress – but sadly, this does nothing for her. The fit is soso… and the flowers with the veil – not a good look. She should have chosen one or the other not both. Such a disappointment! She normally has such beautiful taste. :(

LLB on

No, it’s not my fave, but for an outdoor wedding in Big Sur I can see how you might not want something dragging the ground, and also something you could wear with flats that is a bit more casual. It’s cute (cutesy might be more like it). I do like how it’s a bit lower in back.

indira green on

Traditional???? Tradition went out the window when she had the baby before marrying the guy!!!

HighPriestess on

She is not going to like this but she looks like she is doing her communion.

anen on

The 80′s fatso girl called she wants her dress back! xP

Shocked on

Well, now we know why she wedded secretly… all of you should be ashamed. She is a stunning woman.

Turandot on

Beautiful Natalie looks like a drudge in that homely, ill-fitted gown.

Perhaps she’ll wear a more beautiful dress for her 2nd and 3rd marriages.

Ava on

She looks happy. Wearing a smile at your wedding is the ONLY thing that matters, and is something that many people overlook.
