Yankees Star Nick Swisher on Hat Hair: Just Go with It
Wearing a sweaty baseball hat in 90-degree heat does not make for good hair. But for New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher, there’s not really another option on game days.
“I deal with hat hair all the time,” he tells PEOPLE. “Every day in Yankee Stadium, we’re doing our seventh-inning stretch, singing ‘God Bless America,’ and we’re not exactly looking our best. You just try and keep as much water on [your hair] as possible.”
But off the field, Swisher is a little more serious about his haircare — and that’s one reason Head & Shoulders recently chose him to participate in its “Mane Man Challenge.”
The Yankee is up against former baseball stars Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez and Dennis Eckersley in a series of fun trials — think peanut eating, bubble-gum chewing and baseball signing — hoping to join Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps on the Head & Shoulders roster. Through Sunday, fans can watch some of the challenges, and vote for their favorite competitor online.
“People should vote for me because I had the most fun,” Swisher says. And Rodriguez and Eckersley had better watch out — the outfielder warns that “New York is coming, and I’m bringing the Yankees universe with me.”
When not focused on the competition, Swisher admits he does focus on his hair — especially when wife Joanna Garcia-Swisher weighs in. “She likes it grown out,” he shares. “She was the one who told me I needed to grow it out in the first place. But being in New York, you have a lot more rules [about hair] you have to follow.”
So for now, the baseballer maintains a somewhat short length he’s comfortable with — and that the Yankee organization approves of — and works to keep it just so. “I don’t want poufy hair, and I don’t want greasy hair,” he says. “But I like that mix in between where everything lays down just the way you want it to.” Vote for Swisher through Sunday on the Head & Shoulders for Men Facebook page.
