What's Really Under Those Elaborate 'Downton Abbey' Costumes?

We know — it’s really hard waiting for Downton Abbey season three to being in January. And while we can’t offer any casting or plot morsels to keep you sated until that fateful winter day, we can help tide you over with a few fun tidbits on the period drama’s elaborate costumes.

According to star Michelle Dockery (left), when the cast is in costumes, they’re wearing historically accurate items — down to their knickers.

“The corsets are made for us,” she explained while speaking to reporters at a recent TCA panel at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. “And there are things you don’t get to see, like the mic packs that are strapped to our calves and the wire [that] goes right up.”

Another under-the-skirt secret? “When it is raining, we wear Ugg boots underneath our dresses,” she admitted. “It’s not as glamorous as it may seem.”

What is glamorous, though, are the costumes themselves; according to Dockery, “some of them are vintage pieces — original pieces that have been revamped.” And though some are “falling to pieces,” she revealed, the show’s famed costume department is “determined to use them as much as possible.” Tell us: Are you excited for more Downton Abbey?

I love the costumes and how the actors make it so believable like it really is the beginning of last century. I am upset that it will start in Britain in September and not until January here! We should get it in September as well. I love this series and heard it is going to continue for at least another season

Are we excited?
Is that even a question?

I love Downton Abbey! I love the story, the characters, the costumes, the locations, the soundtracks and of course the actors! We’re just halfway through series 2 in Singapore and are definitely looking forward to series 3! Thank you so much.

I think it should probably read, “We know — it’s really hard waiting for Downton Abbey season three to begin in January.”

Yes, let’s use the antique pieces until they are destroyed so future generations again only have pictures or paintings to go off from. *headdesk* Why do people NOT comprehend that antique clothing has just as much historical value as any other piece from history – if not more so in many cases- and is fragile and, thereby SHOULD NOT BE WORN!!!!!

It’s great to create patterns from or otherwise learn from to see the changes in cuts, styles, techniques, and even technology. However, no one should wear a 100 year old piece until it’s falling apart.
