Going for Gold: The Weekend's Best Olympic Style Moments

Though the Olympics are all about the sporting events, the StyleWatch team has been taking notes on the big fashion and beauty moments, too! So to satisfy your Olympic craving during work today, feel free to share your thoughts on the four looks we can’t stop talking about:
Brand-new updos: While we were transfixed by the female American gymnasts’ sky-high flips and serious jumps, we also couldn’t keep our eyes off of their hair (above, left). The athletes seemingly took a cue from the red carpet and tried the half-messy-half-sleek ‘do — check out those, um, interesting ponytail-bun hybrids. Just one question: How did their tresses stay in place during all of those gravity-defying routines?
Hair bling: The female Russian gymnastics team (above, right) decorated their slicked-back ponytails with a hefty dose of — wait for it — glitter. (Ladies, just because you look like a gold medal from an aerial view, doesn’t mean you’ll earn one.) They also sported dramatic winged liner and shimmery shadow on their eyes, leading us to believe they may have spent as much time on warm-ups as on touch-ups.

The return of the scrunchie: The always-stylish Serena Williams added an interesting accessory to her Saturday look: a scrunchie (above, left). We thought the ’90s hair accessories were as good as gone (except on gymnastics teams; see above), but are they coming back? We hope not, but regardless, we’re glad the tennis star opted for a gold scrunchie — after all, it is the perfect hue for a winner.
Patriotic nail art: Since it wouldn’t make much sense for swimmers to wear makeup, many water babes rocked serious designs on their digits instead. Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain paired her bronze medal with Union Jack nails (above, right), while Missy Franklin of the U.S. sported the American flag on her talons. Swimmers from France and Germany donned intricate, patriotic nail art, too. As it turns out, Minx Nails is on site at the Olympic Village, helping athletes get a little glam before their competitions.
All this, and we haven’t even talked about Ryan Lochte’s latest grills! Tell us: What’s been your favorite Olympic style moment so far?
