Kate Wears a $78,000 Necklace During the Day

The Duchess of Cambridge sported a modest outfit during a pre-Olympics outing in London on Thursday, but her one seemingly simple accessory actually came with quite a hefty price tag.

Kate’s Olympic-style necklace is from Cartier and is said to be from her personal collection. It happens to come at a price of $78,000, too, a source at the store in London tells PEOPLE.

The necklace, from the Trinity range, is made from white and yellow gold and, with its five rings (capped with a large one at its pendant), she felt it was “appropriate” to wear for the event, which celebrated pictures of leading athletes at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Beyond confirming it was from her “private collection,” a spokesman at Kate’s office would not comment on the piece, or its price or whether she received it as a present.

Does it really matter day or night? She’s a princess for goodness sake. She has immaculate taste and class. Leave the poor girl alone.

I think she looks lovely and the necklace if elegant, simple and understated. Its value and the rest aren’t our business.

Leave Kate be. And for those wondering, she chose it herself. She dresses and makes up herself. She did her own hair and makeup on her wedding day as well. I think it’s awesome. She’s human and a future princess. I think it’s pretty cool, myself.

What’s sad about this story is that People is focusing once again on the price of Kate’s clothing and accessories instead of telling us how she met with athletes and tried to support her country as the Olympics draw near. Of course the public criticizes her when this is all they see – how much things cost and who she’s wearing. Who is focusing on what she is trying to do? She can’t hold a “real” job. She has taken on a royal job most of us in all honesty wouldn’t want to do because of this kind of criticism. Leave her alone.

She dresses in a style that is befitting for a princess.Imagine the critical comments that would come if she dressed like a slob or a punk rocker!She is married to the future king of England and needs to dress to impress or the people of the world would question the wisdom of having poor Kate as England’s “First Lady” when William becomes king.Focus on the good,positive things she and William have done and will continue to do.They seem like good,kind people.

I’m glad she finally wears some real bling. Here’s hoping for a tiara soon. I wonder if her husband gifted her this necklace for her 30-birthday.

I doubt Katherine purchased that bauble. She seems to be practical but she could afford it. Want to guess Cartier’s sent it to her as a gift? For people making negative remarks about feeding the poor, she sponsors many charities. I am not rich and I support a group in NY to feed people. All I can say is I wish we had such an exemplary woman to represent our country. She is a gem.
