Kate Wears a $78,000 Necklace During the Day

The Duchess of Cambridge sported a modest outfit during a pre-Olympics outing in London on Thursday, but her one seemingly simple accessory actually came with quite a hefty price tag.

Kate’s Olympic-style necklace is from Cartier and is said to be from her personal collection. It happens to come at a price of $78,000, too, a source at the store in London tells PEOPLE.

The necklace, from the Trinity range, is made from white and yellow gold and, with its five rings (capped with a large one at its pendant), she felt it was “appropriate” to wear for the event, which celebrated pictures of leading athletes at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Beyond confirming it was from her “private collection,” a spokesman at Kate’s office would not comment on the piece, or its price or whether she received it as a present.

I wonder how many people remember that her family has millions…even before she met a royal. Leave the poor girl alone. And no, she does not have to give every thing to an African cause or starving refugees, she does a lot for charity and so does the royal family. They can be rich and not have to feel bad about it.

Hahaha…There are people here that are saying she looks like she is in love with herself. Tell me, what exactly does that look like ? As far as her clothes go, she accepts no free designer outfits because of the favoritism it would look like and like some here, people would say she is pompous. She dresses very moderately for a princess and in fact often has on outfits under $100. Her degree she gave up the day she married a prince. What will people have her do, spend her days being a social worker or an accountant ? Prince William waited 8 years to marry her, in part I’m sure because he knew life as she knew it would be done from that day forward, give her some credit for goodness sake. She has chose many, many charities since becoming princess and has raised millions.

And so it begins…people starting to turn their venom on Kate. I suppose that she hasn’t announced a pregnancy yet, so people are getting annoyed. Like someone else said, they are multimillionaires, for goodness sake ! I’m sure that it was a gift from William, her husband.

I love her necklace; it’s very appropriate for the occasion. Gold is pricey these days and, since the necklace is all gold, the price is no surprise. I’m sure a more affordable version in sterling will be available all over the world – probably before the Olympics even start.

Really?! Why is this even in print? It’s her necklace, if she wants to wear it while eating breakfast at McDonald’s it’s nobody’s business but hers. It’s also no one else’s business how much it costs. She’s a classy lady, leave her alone.

Seriously that necklace cost more than my house when we bought it (Admittedly we bought at the right time in the market from a seller desperate to sell, we could sell it for well over twice what we paid now, but still!!)
I’m sorry she is more than intitled to wear whatever she want but I just could never fathom spending that much money on one necklace, even if I had as much money as they do, especially considering the look of it. It is a beautiful necklace but it really doesn’t look like anything special to me.

Tired of everything about this woman. She is average looking and has good fashion taste but nothing outstanding. If she were not married to Prince William no one would give her a second thought.
