Kate Wears a $78,000 Necklace During the Day

The Duchess of Cambridge sported a modest outfit during a pre-Olympics outing in London on Thursday, but her one seemingly simple accessory actually came with quite a hefty price tag.

Kate’s Olympic-style necklace is from Cartier and is said to be from her personal collection. It happens to come at a price of $78,000, too, a source at the store in London tells PEOPLE.

The necklace, from the Trinity range, is made from white and yellow gold and, with its five rings (capped with a large one at its pendant), she felt it was “appropriate” to wear for the event, which celebrated pictures of leading athletes at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Beyond confirming it was from her “private collection,” a spokesman at Kate’s office would not comment on the piece, or its price or whether she received it as a present.

WOW!..I know royals can wear whatever they want but jeez!, donate that money to Africa or give a family food for one year for 1/100 of that price!..Ridiculous!

She is amazing and looks perfect each and every time an dyes, her “personal collection” she is married to a duke, I would hope she has a few nice things, well she would look awesome in it , not everything she wears ahs to be from walmart to make everyone happy, she is of true grace and style and I look forward to seeing her in the new everyday…her smile brings one to mine, a hard working simple man with 3 jobs….and it is no ones business if she bought it, got it as a gift etc….I have an italian watch, it was a gift does that make everyone feel better?

Dang, she always looks beautiful. Cartier is one of my favorite brands and if I could afford it, I would be wearing it! Nothing wrong with that.

Maybe her husband gave it to her because he loves her, maybe she got it from the Queen, you all know if you had the money they have you would wear something like that too. It’s beautiful Kate keep showing us any one can be a princess~~~~~~~

This is not the best possible public relations … it may be a good bet that the store which “leaked” the price has lost future royal customers.

I like her, but that really kind of makes me sick! I am a college educated person, work a full time professional job, work by b-u-t-t off and that is more than I make in a year – that she is wearing around her neck! 99.9% right here! UGH!
