Anne Hathaway: ‘I Was Inconsolable’ After Chopping My Hair

Anne Hathaway has proudly worn her pixie cut since chopping her long brown locks for her role in Les Misérables — but initially, she wasn’t happy about it.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be such a big deal, because it was my idea,” she admitted Thursday on Live! with Kelly. “It was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I knew it was something the character did, so I just offered it to the director and he said ‘Yes,’” she recalled. “As it got closer, I thought: I can’t really take it back now.”

Though she was mentally prepared, the day of the cut was tough. “I’ve now done back-flips out of windows, I’ve jumped off buildings,” she said. “And cutting my hair reduced me to, like, mental patient-level crying. I was inconsolable.”

To make matters worse, Hathaway had to sit with half-cut hair for 20 minutes; an actress made the initial chop on film, but her stylist, Paul, had to put on that actress’s dress and stand in to finish the cut as the cameras rolled.

“It was all worth it,” however, she said, “because at the very end of the shot I turned around and I saw Paul, beautiful Paul, in the dress with his arms outstretched. It was totally worth it just for that.” Tell us: Have you ever chopped off all of your hair?

I DON’T LIKE IT AT ALL!

None of Your Busniess on

Great hair cut on Anne. Changes are good :)

Love it!

Terri on

Women that get their hair chopped and then whine about it make me boil. When I went through chemo, I was whining about losing my hair. Someone said to me, “I wonder if you feel as bad as that 17-year-old that just lost both her legs to a drunk driver”. Talk about perspective. My hair grew back, her legs won’t. And Anne Hathaway’s hair will grow back, but a lot faster than mine did. Quit whining.

Emily on

Yes, I cut off my hair a couple years ago and it was amazing, I absolutely loved it. I felt so light and new, like being reborn!

Angel on

I don’t like this haircut on her at all. And I don’t think bangs look good on anyone. I will be glad when she grows it out again. It looks much better. I have had my hair just about every length, and am growing it out again from having it VERY short. I think that longer hair looks much nicer on a woman. Or if a woman goes with short hair, it should look feminine….this looks like a boyish haircut….don’t like it at all, to be honest.

Dessy on

It is just a hair get over it. I am sure that the money she got paid for this role will be enough to make up for all that “pain and suffering” that she had to go through.

Joyce Phipps on

Even with chemo your hair does grow back. There are so many other things that are much much worse. Besides Anne your hair still looks good.

The Kidd on

She needs to play “Shelia” in a new “The Artist formerly known as The Artist formerly known as Prince” MOVIE! Now he goes by “Prince” because the girls really like the Royal name! Prince William wished he rocked his wallet and money tang!

Anna on

I recently cut all of my hair off. My husband absolutely loves it and I find it so easy for the hot summer weather. I agree with the other posters about this sort of thing. Get over yourself, it will grow back. She has a team of people helping her to look great. I think she has such a beautiful face who cares about the hair? Hair, like weight does NOT define your beauty. Smile and be kind that is beauty.

jen on

inconsolable? over hair??

Jackie on

I have fantasized many times about cutting all of my (very long) hair off … it seems that it would be so freeing. Once it’s done it’s done though, so that’s scary. It would grow back but it would take a loooong time.

Megan on

You guys have to watch the interview, she was totally joking and laughing. It sounds serious the way People are putting it.

Chrislyn on

I chopped all my hair off about three years ago, and it felt so freeing!! I have since began to grow it out again, but I don’t regret it at all.

mj on

Try losing your hair when you have alopecia and knowing that it won’t grow back. That will really make you cry. There are worse things that can happen to you for sure. Celebrities whining about something like this really bothers me–especially when they are paid so well.

Guest on

@Terri
I sincerely doubt she was comparing cutting her hair to going through chemo or losing a limb. Stop trying to make a goofy side-comment/story into something so negative and selfish

CJLM on

It’ll grow back…this is what you get upset about…you got paid good money to do it!

Rousquilles on

I cut it and may never grow it back.
I feel so much sexier, so much less like a slave to the conventional ideas of beauty.

Jester on

Oh poleeeeeese!!! Gimme a break, lady. This reminds me of Cameron Diaz when her hair was cut short by a friend of hers’ in her home (even though she had short hair when she was younger, to boot!) and she had a breakdown. She gets paid how much? Admits it was HER decision and still a breakdown??? Annie, your hair will grow and in the mean time, you can get some hair extensions. If you forgo the extensions, try some wax/mousse, etc… You don’t have to wear it like a Peter Pan ‘do’. It is workable, girl… I am almost embarrassed for you even talking about a haircut. Tsk!!!

Aurora on

I’ve had long hair (mid back) and then short short hair in cycles about every three or four years for most of my 42 years. Change is good. It’s just hair. Nothing you choose to do with your hair is permanent. Have fun.

I think Anne looks lovely. The pixie cut brings out the slenderness of her neck and her amazing eyes.

addictionstudies on

I do not like this cut on her either (agreeing with some previous posts). It’s way too short. Short cuts don’t look good on just any woman. Yes, hair grows back but not overnight.

raa on

Yes, I have and I cried like Anne did. Although, I wanted it, it was just so shocking! It’s so much more fun and flirty and easy and sexy when short. Only God knows why I grew it out again and again. Now, I chop it off about every other Summer. It has to be cut and colored a lot more often but it really is much more fun short :)

Sharon on

I just cut my hair off myself. We women really get a lot of our identity on our hair. It is one of the things done to dehumanize women in concentration camps and other places. So even when you think it’s not a big deal it can be surpristing just how big a deal it is. It can be freeing and scary. You feel exposed. Long hair can make feel protected and hidden. So I can see that it is a shock when you go from extreme to another. She has a beautiful face and pull the pixie look off. I personally can’t and you usually don’t know until it’s done and then you can’t do anything about it.

SayinitLikeItIs on

She looks kind of like a boy..she is much prettier in long locks

Paris on

No need for tears! Most actresses have extensions anyway……

shastalove on

Anne you need to lose another stone of weight to really look great. That stoner boy toy.

Jane on

shastalove, unfortunately there’s rumors going around that she’s expecting a child with him.

Nobody on

It’s just hair. I’ll grow my hair out long, and chop it off a couple of years later, keep it short for a few years, then grow it out again. IT’S JUST HAIR. It will GROW BACK.

jamie on

Anne is not only a fabulous actor… she is a absolutely
beautiful woman both. And judging from her interviews
she is a wonderful soul as well. Any one who has anything negative to say is just jealous…. I look forward to Anne’s
Academy Award speech and the one’s after that as well

Barbara on

I did it once to get rid of a very bad hair coloring experienced that completely fried my hair. I “lived with the end result” because it had to be done but hated the way my hair and I looked for the next 1 1/2 years until it grew longer again. Everyone that knew me also commented on how much better I finally looked once my hair length was back to normal for me.

Swim on

I completely agree with Terri.

sunshine on

Damn, she is getting paid for it! If it botherd her that much, she could have turned the movie down but she didn’t, so why is she complaining?

Felice on

Here is a new word for you Anne – wig!

Sue Z. Q. on

I generally prefer longer hair to shorter for women, but this looks especially heinous on her, I think her facial features are too big and this look makes it more apparent. Maybe if the bangs weren’t quite so short it would be not quite so horrid.

ChaCha on

I had long hair that I decided to get cut off when I was younger. I must have been ready for it, because I loved the change. It was as short as Anne’s, and I felt empowered and girly at the same time. I love her new look–very Audrey Hepburn.

Miriam on

I think the “mental patient-level crying”-comment was offensive and unnecessary. Don’t care about her hair.

Jennifer Coombes on

Yes, it was her idea. And it’s not the end of the world, of course, but she’s still allowed to mourn the loss of her beautiful hair. Just because some people have it worse, doesn’t mean she isn’t entitled to her feelings. There are always people who have it worse somewhere in the world!

StephyWephy on

I think people will understand the ‘inconsolable’ part better when they realize that she cut it, it was on set, during the movie, and it looked like a total chop job, so yeah, I would be inconsolable too. But, it sounds like she shook it off well, and I think it’s adorable on her!!!

Lisa Eilers on

gosh guys…she is not whining about it. even she is saying how ridiculous it is that she has done all these other things and chopping the hair is what made her cry. she was just saying she didn’t expect it to make her feel that way, during the process. she is not crying about the short do now. she didn’t ask for sympathy, she didn’t say she had anything worse than anyone. when i moved out of my first apartment years ago, i turned to the empty rooms and cried, because it felt weird to leave something behind. same concept. i don’t need anyone to tell me to be grateful that i am not homeless, or any of the other things that could be worse. i was just experiencing a feeling, regardless of whether it is rational.

Laila on

It was for a role, ok, yeah…it’s just hair it will grow back but it doesn’t fit her. If it was a new hairstyle she was just trying it would be a fail..

Michele on

The mental patient comment was rather rude- agree with Miriam.

Cindy on

A few years ago, I had my head shaved as part of a fund-raiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. My formerly brown-dyed tresses grew back in lovely shades of gray and platinum. My hair guy begged me NOT to color it again and it was a bit of an adjustment at first but I’ve never regretted it for a moment. (I also raised $800!!)

Kristine on

@ TERRI and EMILY….beautifully said Terri! I hope more people share your perspective! And Emily…my heart goes out to you. It’s time to get a life (or at least a meaningful one).

Jules on

If you’ve never had long, beautiful hair, then you cannot relate to feeling distraught about having your hair chopped off. My hair was my trademark, so my first major haircut was traumatic. Everyone who saw me gasped. I cried for days and days. And yes, I did get over it, but still!

fortunateizzi on

Yeah it’s not a good look on her, but it was her decision to do it, she should have been more professional and not held up shooting over a haircut.

Lynn on

I think Anne’s hair looks great on her! If she was ‘inconsolable’ for a few minutes, well then that was her way of getting through that time of change. Each of us has our own way with dealing with life’s hiccups. Maybe if we all tried to be a fountain, rather than a drain to each other, our journey in this life would be even better.

Robyn on

For all of you that are saying disparaging things about her tears: I seriously doubt that you’ve never cried over something superficial! Like perceived FAT maybe?? Give poor Anne a break. As women we all want to feel attractive and when we don’t we get upset. I would probably have cried too!

PS on

She cries about her hair… meanwhile Sylvester Stallone and Kelsey Grammar are both grieving over losing their children. Guess who’s going to get my sympathy and compassion? On another note, Anne Hathaway has also said some pretty astoundingly insensitive things about depression. Something tells me she’s not exactly in touch with reality.

klb on

My head has been completely shaved on multiple occasions for brain surgery. I actually handled it quite well and decided to appreciate the positives of the situation: faster to care for in the shower, easier to get ready to go out with my husband and two young children, etc. My hair used to be dark brown and despite trying to get it to curl through having permed it several times over the years, it absolutely always remained straight as a board; however, every time my hair comes back in it is more and more curly. It’s just hair, and losing it isn’t the end of the world.

Melanie on

@Terri While I agree it’s good to keep persepctive in general, we need to also keep in mind that making major changes like this is a shock that can take some getting use to, and we shouldn’t dismiss someone’s feelings about an experience just because another’s was worse.
I really don’t know why try to tell someone that their feelings are not a big deal just because it could be worse. We don’t do it about happy things. If I got a good review at work and praise from my boss should I not feel pleased just because my co-worker did better and got a promotion? In my opinion our feelings are individual to us first, relative to anyone else second, and in either case still perfectly valid.

Kim SC on

To a lot of women, their identity has a lot to do with their hair. I cut mine short after always having long hair. I did not feel feminine, girly or sexy. I knew it would grow back but that didn’t stop me from regretting my choice, struggling with my identity and accepting my new look. I know Anne got alot of money for the role, but “cut her some slack”. It was difficult for her. She is a human being after all and has feelings.

Chris Black on

The only actress I have seen who really looks great in very short hair is Halle Berry. One has to have a very beautiful face and perfect features to wear short hair well. It’s ok on Anne but looks too masculine in my opinion.

bobbie on

She could make it a lot cuter by, wearing it more pixie all around her face and big earrings…she is not making it sylish at all…

wilyfem on

She looks great both ways, but is especially striking with short hair! It will grow back Anne! And plus, if you really hate it, you can afford real hair weaves, unlike most of us.

Melissa on

She has the face for the pixie cut. I think it looks gorgeous!

Jane on

What a pathetic person! I chopped off 15 inches of mine and gave it to “locks of love” for wigs for cancer children. It GROWS back Anne, stop being so full of yourself, you’re nothing to look at now matter what length your hair, what an idiot she is!

Dru on

There was a lot of whining after I cut my hair… but it was all my husband. Who wants the exact same hair cut year after year?

plucylew on

I love Anne Hathaway, but her dramatic reaction to cutting her hair is a bit much. As a cancer patient, I have dealt with hair loss and hair cuts, sporting various looks from the bald, to the buzz cut, to the pixie. Hair loss from cancer treatment can be challenging, but largely because you are facing a life threatening illness and the treatment is tough. Anne looks adorable with short hair, and I hope that “surviving” this benign experience shows to her that there’s no use crying over cut hair.

Alexis on

Its horrible. i would never leave the house. No women looks good with short hair. She looks like a women trying to be a man. Her hair was her signature that made her beauitful , what a shame she will take years to grow it back the way it was.

Linda on

That’s as important a story as Cameron Diaz recalling her tragic haircut to Leno. My heart bleeds.

Shutup Terri on

I don’t blame her. Women like “TERRI” who whine about whining make me want to slap them!

sandr88 on

It may sound superficial, but I once cut my hair very short and got upset about it. For some reason it made me feel unfeminine. No one made fun of me, but I personally wasn’t comfortable with the cut and feel that short hair definitely does not suit me. I even thought of putting in hair extensions. I think it is for a person to decide what makes them happy. I think Anne looks gorgeous anyway though.

Chloe on

All right I love Anne Hathaway!!! She’s incredibly gorgeous and one of America’s Sweethearts so as far as cutting her hair I have gotta hand it to you. It takes a lot cause as women we have a tendency to learn our hair is our crowning glory. I just cut my hair almost 2 months ago and I actually feel really good about it. It grows back…and I feel great about it cause it taught me something take a risk even when you’re afraid to cause cutting your hair might be good for you more than just for healthy roots it’s good for the soul too. =)

JMQuinn on

Her long hair was one of her best features, softening her nose and mouth. Not everyone can carry off a super short cut.

Lisa on

I don’t like this look on her, but it will grow back and thank goodness for Hair Extensions these days!! lol

Anna on

AMEN TO WHAT TERRI SAID!!!!!!! <3 I 100% support that!

ruth on

I had to cut my hair short (I used to wear it short too), but for chemo, losing hair. But, it is the best option for hot summer. But still hard to lose hair! At least, yes, Anne’s hair will grow back, and eventually so will mine. :)

Janet on

I used to be able to sit on my hair, it was so long. I walked in to a salon one day and said, ‘chop it. Pixie short’. They refused. I walked back out. Took me 5 stylists before I found one that would do what I asked. Every one before her said, “oh no! You’ll have a mental breakdown with all that hair gone!”
To me, it was just hair. It’ll grow back. She chopped it all off, I felt like a new woman. I loved it & six years later, still have very short hair. No tears, no regrets!

StyleWatch Fan on

I TOTALLY agree with Terry. Anne Hathaway needed Terry standing next to her right before she was going to get her haircut change. Way to go, Terry!!

Addie on

I find it completely ridiculous to cry over a haircut. I have grown out my hair, cut it off, grown it out again, cut it boy short, and since it was always my choice, I never once cried. Cutting your hair for a role is even less of a reason to cry. I love Anne Hathaway, but I find this to be a complete overreaction.

diane on

I chopped all my hair off once. I think the hairdresser was more upset than I was.

Tracy on

@Terri, I completely understand what you mean. I went through chemo and losing my hair was very difficult. My thought process was the same as yours – it will all grow back eventually. At least women who decide to cut their hair have a choice. I didn’t…

kat on

I am not sure why people are making fun of her for sharing how she felt about cutting her hair. I am sure she has perspective and realizes cutting her hair isn’t the same as losing it to cancer or some other trial far worse. I think everyone here has had a melt down about something in their life, that really wasn’t that important in hindsight. Some women hold their long hair dear to them, it makes them feel beautiful and if you identify yourself that way, losing it would make you feel a little lost. I could NEVER cut my hair that short, and if someone did, I would probably cry my eyes out too. I am sure some person will judge me for that on here.. this has to be the most judgemental string of comments I have ever read.

Charli on

Lol I respect her honesty. It is weird to cutoff your hair in any circumstances because it makes you look like different and its part of you.I’ve done it a couple of times and loved it but was shocked each time I did. Of course its not as traumatic as having chemo but Geez lighten up.

Chai on

I’ve seen women cry when the stylist cuts off too much from a trim so I can’t even imagine.

Paul on

I read that she actually has transplanted cow eyes… for the look.

Kate on

I’ve chopped off my hair three times for locks of love… each time I donated over 20 inches and each time I was inconsolable! But I’m almost ready for my fourth time :).

Sue Rosenorn on

Shes too vain. Women cut their hair all the time. She can always wear wigs and extensions till it grows back.

Meg on

Whiny *itch. needs to get over it. Hair grows back. There are many problems and things to get distressed about in this world, but hair isn’t one of them! I’m sick of spoiled stars whining about their petty BS. And Angel, you’re wrong; bangs look good on everyone.

Terry Nicholetti on

When I became a novice in the RC Church back in 1964, I thought my head would be shaved, but actually my hair was just cut very short. I was 19; t was very traumatic and took some time to get over. So I think “Terri” is being quite harsh in condemning Ann’s “whining.” I don’t see any value in “my pain is greater than your pain” comments when someone expresses a genuine emotion. Thanks, Anne!

Tonya on

Yes I have many times. but, the latest time I did, I donated it to Locks of Love. I felt good about it!!!
Everyone reacts differently when making a dramatic change. Theres no need for negative comments, telling someone to stop whining or comparing them to cancer patients. Everyone reacts differently and thats okay!!

Crystal on

Crying about a haircut??? Good grief she needs to grow up. I wish a haircut was all I had to focus on.

C'mon Ann! on

Mental patient crying? How offensive and rude. You would think celebrities would be smart enough not to make fun of people with special needs by now! Grrrrrrr

sally on

She looks great with long or short hair!

Marissa on

If she wants to cry over lost hair, let her. She had beautiful hair. I’d be inconsolable over something like that as well! For me, my hair defines my look.

LilaJoy on

in 2005, I had hair to my mid back and I went and had it hacked to my shoulders. BAD IDEA. The same day, my dog – who tried following me to the salon – ran in the road and was hit by a car (4 pound teacup chihuahua) I vowed never to cut my hair again.

It’s currently at my lower back. Long. Curly. Soft. Beautiful. in memory of Miss Lola Chihuahua

SatieMama on

Oh God, get over yourself. If you’re crying over your hair, your life is pretty pathetic. Be grateful you’re healthy and that it will grow back. Be grateful for your success and every other good thing in your life. Sometimes I wonder why People stoops to the level of posting nonsense like this.

Beth on

I don’t think the pixie cut suits Anne. But it will grow back, it’s only hair. No reason to be inconsolable.
I’ve grown my hair long and cut it short several times in the last 20 years. About 5 or 6 times I’d say. I’ve only tried the pixie once, and it didn’t suit me either, my bone structure is similar to Anne’s. The other times, it was like a chin or just below chin length type of layered bob.
It’s actually a great feeling. You feel freer and lighter. Then when the hair grows long again, you feel so femine and the hair is flowing and lovely. When it gets tiresome, off it goes again! And each time I’ve cut it, I donate to Locks of Love. Also a great feeling. I hope Anne did that.

Jean on

Can a grown woman be any more shallow than to be that concerned over her hair. She’s probably a democrat too!!! Yuck!!

McG on

Sheesh people, I didn’t get the sense that she was being deeply serious, it was just a drastic change, which SHE chose. She’s simply saying she didn’t realize the impact it would have. I think she knows good and well that it can and will grow back. I doubt she’s trying to be insensitive, just honest.

lizzy on

she looks like a boy, not a good look for her. she is a beautiful woman but not with that hair, that being said she definately showed her commitment to her role. credit for that.

Really on

She needs to get over herslf…

Kim on

Seruously..it’s only HAIR. It grows back. Stop whining. I had cancer surgery Thursday. I’m not whining..and that’s a lot more serious than cutting off some hair. Jeez…

@Terri on

sorry, I wouldn’t call your opinion perspective. yes, aweful things happen. An it’s still ok to feel horrible after getting your hair cut. Those “perspectives” you are talking about are just an excuse to deny people their feelings. It’s ok. And maybe you find a way to be less bitter.

guest on

I love her hair! I know it’s a change but she looks amazing.

Carrie on

You look like a boy!!!! EWWWWW!

jumbybird on

What a drama queen!

T on

She looks lovely either way. I think she’s being a little dramatic. There are more important things to worry about besides hair.

blair on

she looks like a teenage boy…not a pretty look for a grown woman…

Dee Dee on

It is really hard and perfectly normal to cry when you cut your long hair off. I always find getting a haircut hard. I much preferred when my hair was long and it was always just a trim. Yeah for anne that tried something new and yeah that she can grow it back if she likes.

ALICE on

Wow Terri,

Women like that make your blood boil? Geez, that’s extreme and she has a right to her feelings. I am sorry for your illness and what you had to go through, but really words are harsh and it sounds like you may need therapy to work through your illness.

val on

She gets paid millions of dollars to cut her hair and she whines about it? The extras on the set said she was behaving like a little child. I guess she isn’t as down-to-earth as people thought. Typical actor: making things more dramatic than they have to be.

Dona Brooks on

I don’t understand why they have to cut their hair for roles they play. There are excellent wigs out there. Did Ashley Greene cut hers for Twilight? NO! I had to cut mine once waaay back, because I was attacked by some girls in school who put wads of gum in my hair (1963), and it was embedded in my scalp. So yes, it is traumatic. However, I wasn’t paid to do it nor was it my choice. WIGS!!?

Jess on

Really? Mental patient level crying? Suck it up, Anne.

Lizzie on

ANNE HATHAWAY is simply BEAUTIFUL,CHARMING & SOOOOOO ADORABLE!! IF she is pregnant I wish her PRAYERS(SSSSSSSS) alllllll around 4 HEALTH, JOY, HAPPY FAM LIFE W/ HER BOYFRIEND & BABY and TOTAL SERENITY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Below Your Means on

This is not news, perhaps if she had donated it to lock for love or something. People on chemo loose their hair all the time, who really wants to hear some celebrity whine about a bad haircut?!

TC on

I was inconsolable when I found out Hathaway and Seyfried were cast in Les Miz.

I also find it fairly shallow of her to be upset about this. Jeez. How much did she get paid for the role? She’s not a cancer patient, she’s an overpaid, no talent actress.

Give me a break.

Jessica on

Every couple of years, I chop my hair off pretty short. But I do it to donate. I have donated my hair a total of five times so far, and I know it won’t be the last. No matter how drastic the change is for the first few days, I know it went to a great cause. Plus, as others have said, it’s hair. It will grow back.

Statia on

I can’t believe I am posting to a People.com article but I just feel like I have too. When people make comments like “….mental patient-level crying” it just adds to the stigma associated with mental illness. Although, I do not know her personally and never will, I thought she had more class than that.

cyndi on

I ‘v done it 3 times and have donated my hair to locks of love. If you’re confident about who you are hair, make up, weight shouldn’t matter. Its about who you are on the inside. And I loved my short pixie haircuts.

Dee on

She’s inconsolible over her hair?! Well, in other news today, Sylvester Stallone’s son has passed.

Fris on

Reading these comments, I find it interesting that people have so much of their identities tied up in hair length. And besides, who said we have to all conform to the girls-have-long-hair and boys-have-short-hair mentality? Hair is just hair. It is only one of the physical attributes that make up who you are. And to be honest, that isn’t even the important part of who you are.

Jill on

I admire Anne’s guts for going through with the cut but I have to be honest – I don’t really like it! Luckily for her it will grow back. She’s very beautiful, I just find this haircut makes her look like a boy.

Guest111 on

Her hair is none of your business!! She got it cut for a role, which shows devotion and dedication for her job. Whether you like it or not doesn’t matter. She cut it because she had to in order to become her character. Jeez! Stop being unnecessarily mean to her!!!

meghan on

I have totally chopped off my hair multiple times, donated too, I personally find it liberating and exciting that I can pull off super duper short and long.

Pia Razon on

I tried to give myself the Halle Berry look about 15 years ago and while clipping the back of my hair, the clipper guard fell off and a long bald spot ran through the back of my head. I panicked and started trying to blend the rest of my hair into the long shaven path and it kept getting shorter and shorter and worst and worst until I was damn near bald with spots all over. When I finally made it to the barber the next day she said, “Dear God, what happened!” I felt like Anne Hathoway at that moment.

williamsam1991 on

looking cool in new style but someone consider as a boy LOL :P

Pete on

What is with all these actresses having their hair cut off in films? Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron have all chopped their hair off for movies. It’s hollywood, they can work around it with prostehtics and wigs.

If it wasn’t mandatory for her to cut her hair off, then she shouldn’t have suggested it to the director. I am sure they could have found a way to convey the same intensity of her character Fantine, losing her hair. Anne should wear a wig or something.

Myself on

I know she may be rich and famous but isn’t it a bit rude to say these things. I mean yes, she has every resources to make her hair come back much faster then most, but what if it was her first time chopping it that short. The first time I cut my hair really short I was afraid, unsure and ‘inconsolable’ about it. Yes it’s just hair and people said that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, it’s the inside that counts. Instead of all this complaining about her whining say you either like or you don’t. I whined about my cut for weeks, then I got over it.

I think she looks a bit strange in it, because I’ve never seen her with SHORT hair before, but after a while it’ll grow on her/people.

I always find Anne Hathaway to be self-absorbed. This story is a prime example of that. Take your millions, Anne, and get over it. To People Magazine: this is a news worthy story? Really?

Barbara Hallanger on

Wow, inconsolable about her hair? How would she handle a real crisis?

Kim on

Yes, I chopped off my hair, and donated it to Locks of Love. It felt wonderful to do so. And guess what? It grew back.

Anne Hathaway needs to get a grip.

She looks so much better with the short pixie do. I never thought she was pretty before, and now her face just glows!

Blondiejune on

It’s cute. She’s such a diva.

Hey Anne! Hair grows back. Quit being a child and get over it.

Yes!! 5 of us did in solidarity with one of our friends – she was losing her hair to chemo. On the day her husband shaved her head, the rest of us had buzz cuts about 1″ long. We cried and we laughed and proudly supported our friend who eventually lost the battle to cancer.

I’m sure Anne knows that Chemo patients lose their hair, that there are more important things in the world, and that she has enough money to get extensions. If someone came and cut all of your hair off that you had grown out and become attached to, you would probably be upset as well. Yes, it was her idea, but it doesn’t mean it was easy to deal with. She looks gorgeous, and I cannot wait to see her in the film! She’s amazing!

Janet on

Yes, I have chopped mine off twice to donate to Locks for Love.

Yes… inconsolable over hair. I’ve done the exact same thing!! Sorry for the women who don’t get it. Some of us actually identify by our hair, it is part of WHO we are, and might be the ONLY thing we feel pride in, so don’t judge just because you don’t understand. Maybe you haven’t lived our lives, so you can’t understand.
KUDOS to Anne, I do get it. It’s hard to do, it’s like peeling off a full layer of your skin, shedding your soul, to bare more of yourself. Very hard to do! Bravo! You’re beautiful no matter who you are!

I like it, Anne! If you wouldn’t mind a suggestion, feathered, longer, bangs might work here. Either way, you look great, and have the face built for a pixie!

Over 25 years ago Dorothy Hamil’s haircut was all the rage. One day after I had gotten my hair cut there was a young lady (about 16) who was waiting in the salon to be picked up by her mother. I mentioned to her that I just loved her hair! She said, “Really?” I said it was lovely (and it really was). She sighed a huge sigh of relief. I asked her if something was wrong. She mentioned that this morning her hair was half way down her back and that EVERYONE was concerned about her decision to cut it. I told her that though I didn’t know what she looked like before that she was a very beautiful young lady and the cut looked smashing on her. She grinned from ear to ear. I told her to love it and not let anyone’s reaction cause her to second guess her decision. I hope she loved it as much as she looked good in it!

My hair is the same cut right now. I was so nervous but I love it!

I recently cut all my hair off too before starting chemotherapy and I didn’t cry like a little baby. Though to be fair, it looks MUCH better on me…. Because she gets to be famous and richer and prettier (well maybe not with her short hair) than me, I don’t feel too bad being the spiteful girl who says “you cannot pull that look off.” :P But I agree with Terri. Stop whining, Anne. At least you didn’t have to get cancer.

Absolutely love the hair just hope you keep it and just go and grow it in beautiful did I say beautiful yes I did beautiful

I cut had my hair cut supershort twice in my whole life. Once when I was 22 and then just recently after I turned 55. It is more of a mental hurdle for most women than anything and you just have to not care what anyone else thinks and own it. I think every girl should do it at least once in her life just for the “growth” experience. So many of us hide behind our hair and uphold the ideal beauty model of what society thinks we should be to look feminine and acceptable. I’m beautiful, hair or lack thereof, but it’s taken me a while to realize it. Just do it!

Anne Hathaway is a breathtakingly beautiful woman! But make no mistake about it, her long beautiful hair is one of those amazing features which compliments an already lovely face and body. Chopping off her beautiful hair just seems wrong somehow, robbing us of her whole effect. In any case, I think she is amazing!

LOVE IT!!! I shaved my heads years ago and it was a GREAT experience. Unfortuanitly while I LOVED it, my face didn’t look to great w/ it and I let it grow out. You go girl!!!!

Hmmmmm on

You can always wear a wig till it grows back.
