Anne Hathaway: ‘I Was Inconsolable’ After Chopping My Hair

Anne Hathaway has proudly worn her pixie cut since chopping her long brown locks for her role in Les Misérables — but initially, she wasn’t happy about it.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be such a big deal, because it was my idea,” she admitted Thursday on Live! with Kelly. “It was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I knew it was something the character did, so I just offered it to the director and he said ‘Yes,’” she recalled. “As it got closer, I thought: I can’t really take it back now.”

Though she was mentally prepared, the day of the cut was tough. “I’ve now done back-flips out of windows, I’ve jumped off buildings,” she said. “And cutting my hair reduced me to, like, mental patient-level crying. I was inconsolable.”

To make matters worse, Hathaway had to sit with half-cut hair for 20 minutes; an actress made the initial chop on film, but her stylist, Paul, had to put on that actress’s dress and stand in to finish the cut as the cameras rolled.

“It was all worth it,” however, she said, “because at the very end of the shot I turned around and I saw Paul, beautiful Paul, in the dress with his arms outstretched. It was totally worth it just for that.” Tell us: Have you ever chopped off all of your hair?

Crying about a haircut??? Good grief she needs to grow up. I wish a haircut was all I had to focus on.

Mental patient crying? How offensive and rude. You would think celebrities would be smart enough not to make fun of people with special needs by now! Grrrrrrr

She looks great with long or short hair!

If she wants to cry over lost hair, let her. She had beautiful hair. I’d be inconsolable over something like that as well! For me, my hair defines my look.

in 2005, I had hair to my mid back and I went and had it hacked to my shoulders. BAD IDEA. The same day, my dog – who tried following me to the salon – ran in the road and was hit by a car (4 pound teacup chihuahua) I vowed never to cut my hair again.

It’s currently at my lower back. Long. Curly. Soft. Beautiful. in memory of Miss Lola Chihuahua

Oh God, get over yourself. If you’re crying over your hair, your life is pretty pathetic. Be grateful you’re healthy and that it will grow back. Be grateful for your success and every other good thing in your life. Sometimes I wonder why People stoops to the level of posting nonsense like this.

I don’t think the pixie cut suits Anne. But it will grow back, it’s only hair. No reason to be inconsolable.
I’ve grown my hair long and cut it short several times in the last 20 years. About 5 or 6 times I’d say. I’ve only tried the pixie once, and it didn’t suit me either, my bone structure is similar to Anne’s. The other times, it was like a chin or just below chin length type of layered bob.
It’s actually a great feeling. You feel freer and lighter. Then when the hair grows long again, you feel so femine and the hair is flowing and lovely. When it gets tiresome, off it goes again! And each time I’ve cut it, I donate to Locks of Love. Also a great feeling. I hope Anne did that.

Can a grown woman be any more shallow than to be that concerned over her hair. She’s probably a democrat too!!! Yuck!!

Sheesh people, I didn’t get the sense that she was being deeply serious, it was just a drastic change, which SHE chose. She’s simply saying she didn’t realize the impact it would have. I think she knows good and well that it can and will grow back. I doubt she’s trying to be insensitive, just honest.

she looks like a boy, not a good look for her. she is a beautiful woman but not with that hair, that being said she definately showed her commitment to her role. credit for that.
