Vera Wang and Husband Separate; Did Her Black Wedding Gowns Foreshadow a Split?

Vera Wang’s Fall 2012 bridal collection was heralded by critics for its beauty, elegance and unique color palette; many of the designer’s dresses were blush, nude and black. But looking back on those romantic gowns, one has to wonder: was there a hidden message inside?

Wang and husband Arthur Becker announced that they were separating on Wednesday, after 23 years of marriage (the couple wed in 1989 at New York’s Pierre Hotel, WWD reports). “They remain devoted parents to their two daughters,” Cecilia and Josephine, Wang’s company president, Mario Grauso, said in a statement to WWD.

Though Becker reportedly had his own business ventures, he was also involved in Wang’s company, which has expanded into makeup, fragrances, mass market, juniors, home goods and a lower-cost bridal line in recent years. However, a friend of the designer tells WWD that the couple “will not let this impact the running of the company. They have worked too hard to build it up.”

Wang, who started at Ralph Lauren in 1987 and opened her first private salon at New York’s Carlyle Hotel in 1990, famously designed Kim Kardashian‘s three opulent wedding gowns in 2011 (plus sister KhloĆ© Kardashian Odom‘s dress in 2009), and created Hillary Scott’s custom gown for her January 2012 nuptials.

So sad!

They look perfect for Cruella DeVille, Morticia Adams and Lily Munster!

I don’t know why they separated, so I’m not judging, but after that much time, it’s a sad thing that they don’t work their problems out, and remember why they married in the first place. Sometimes there are rough patches and it just seems so easy to part ways. Tough for them and tough for the children……..

gigi on

She is so gaunt looking. She seems like not a very nice lady.

Esther on

WOW! I am actually surprised. I always thought they were happy together. I guess 20+ years isn’t a sign of anything, though. Look at Gibson.

Ruby on

I love black and grey, but I don’t think they belong as wedding dresses. The bride isn’t going to her funeral is she? Come on Vera…you could do much better than this.

Danielle on

Divorce is like a virus….. it’s always more than one person who will catch it…..usually in three’s .She is a wealthy woman that doesn’t need a husband…..!

ELC on

Sorry to hear the news, but come on Vera. A Black Wedding Dress-would you wear one? I would think a happier color is in order, unless of course you are marrying a Vampire.

HB on

Maybe thats why Katie is getting a divorce ????
Holmes and Wang.??????????????????? Hm I wonder???????????

I'm not old on

White wedding dresses are a fairly new idea. In former years the bride wore the dress she would be wearing when she went to her husbands home or headed out west. Black is always associated with death, but was really Sad colors (browns, dark greens, orange) that were worn at funerals.

Rhonda on

Another celebrity divorce does not surprise me. It’s the norm these days.

Imagine being a groom who’s watching your bride approach in one of those dark dresses and, worse yet, her expression is the same as those models.

If those dresses are “beautiful”, “romantic” and “elegant” wedding gowns, they must look a lot nicer in person than they do in the photos.

Maybe they’re the bridesmaid’s dresses? …in which case I’d say they’re perfectly in keeping with what brides like their friends in the wedding party to wear!

Debbie on

I saw a documentary on her several years ago. They were not getting along. I thought to myself then that they would not be married much longer. . .I wonder how long they have been separated.

Lori on

Totally agree with black for a wedding dress! Why do these designers change the traditional color. I guess people asks for these blah n drabby colors…she is a bit droopy herself, very plain–she needs color–if she has a make up line, she really needs to use it!!

Tony on

As a man I actually like the idea of a black wedding dress. Think of it this way. When a woman is attending a chic party the little black dress is a staple. This is a more elegant and formal extension of that. It’s about what meaning you put on it. Remember there once was a time that it was a big no no to wear white after Labor day too.

Karen on

What is really sad is that they couldn’t wait until after their wedding anniversary? It really must be a bad breakup if they couldn’t wait that long, so sad!

Sue on

Black or White…is NOT the reason they are divorcing. It is a relationship issue and has nothing to do with her designs.

Jon on

Sorry to hear this, but I’m glad it was an Amicable Split and that they’ll remain devoted to their 2 Wonderful Daughters, Cecelia and Josephine!

Katie now Vera divorces this summer, who will be next? Sometimes you hear a lot of divorces around the new year hope they can find happiness after all!

paul on

who cares they get divorce it is not anybody’s business. they are rich and friends what else do they need. black or white that does mean nothing they will get divorced any way

Esther on

Rhonda, yes it’s true it is the norm but you expect it of people who marry for 10 years or less. I would think something must of happened or they really must of been postponing since they took longer, almost 23 years before they divved.

sweet pea on

Wow. To all of it. I would have bet money that Ms. Wang was a lesbian. That’s what I get for judging a book by its cover. Shame on me, and I mean that.

Cleo on

Were these two ever really married to each other?

kevin on

Maybe she got tired of his Wang.

GG on

I like Vera wang I wish them the best and hope they remain friends. They both have history and 2 daughters. I kept my friendship with my husband when we split.

In life there are good times and bad times. Hope good times over run the bad times. All the best to both.

La Vie en Rose on

I’m so tired of reading about baby bumps and pregnancies that I find it almost refreshing to read about a divorce. Best of luck to both of them and their children

Chatter on

They don’t really look like wedding gowns – just black evening gowns. Just a thought – does one wear a black veil with these dresses?

Lorie on

She designed Kim Kardashian’s three wedding gowns? That’s funny!

Tico on

Sometimes divorce is all that is left.

Susan Albert on

While dresses 2&3 are very pretty, I do not think they are wedding dresses.

elephant on

Yeah, that’s it, because she’s never designed clothing in black before… even though it’s practically her signature! BTW, have you seen her Spring 2013 wedding gown collection? Every dress is vivid red (every dress in both collections is also available in white). So People, what does red translate to in divorcese?

Trisha on

I saw an hour long documentary about Vera several years ago. There were scenes filmed in her home with her children and husband. Her husband seemed to be a sort of mean man, cynical and sarcastic, and made several snide comments about and to her. I wondered at the time why she would put up with that, and I’m not surprised to see they are divorcing. She probably got tired of his nastiness.

beth on

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. The dresses were shown in black (and also gray and buff) in the U.S., but they were white and ivory on the European runways and they’re white and ivory in stores. It’s a dramatic runway show, as was her most recent one, which showcased bright red wedding dresses. How do dresses that were designed a year ago and runways last October relate to a divorce in July? They don’t.

blair on

black at a wedding? never…..

Mrs. Davis on

Maybe working together wasn’t a good move.

whatever on

she makes the most gorgeous dresses

I love the gown on the right. What’s wrong with black. I wore an emerald green gown because that’s my husband’s favorite color.

Sun on

Black wedding dresses? Perfect for Halloween that’s it.

Gina on

Love her designs and fragrance. Good luck to both of them.

Mya on

That chick in the middle looks like death warmed over. There is nothing about these models that convey a happy occasion such as a wedding.

Jane on

She is SO much better of without him, believe me!!

Kate on

She’s a miserable cow, a nightmare to work with. I’m sure he’ll be a much happier man.

I wish to express my appreciation to you just for rescuing me from this circumstance. Because of exploring throughout the internet and seeing ideas that were not helpful, I thought my life was well over. Living devoid of the solutions to the issues you have solved through this article content is a crucial case, and the ones which might have negatively affected my career if I had not encountered your web blog. Your main know-how and kindness in playing with a lot of things was very useful. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I had not encountered such a stuff like this. I’m able to now look ahead to my future. Thanks a lot so much for your reliable and sensible guide. I will not hesitate to propose your web page to any individual who would like counselling about this problem.

She stated marriage was not one of her priorities
in life. It was her career. The fact that there
is no slander from either party shows a class
act. This was amicable, I’m sure. I wish her
the best, she MUST keep creating those beautiful
wedding gowns and other clothing lines. The
world loves a creative star.

-“I feel similar in those siitatuons. Sometimes when something is on sale that I am thinking of purchasing, I am unsure if I just want it for the deal, or because I really like it. The sales people usually talk me into getting it! But I think it would be great for a wedding! And given your ability to style an outfit, you could make it dressy/elegant enough.”

those into the GOTH look will love this.
