Why Cat Deeley Is Unleashing Her Inner Tomboy on 'The Choice'
On the new FOX dating show The Choice, host Cat Deeley has to outshine the male contestants (Thursday night’s lineup includes Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and Taylor Hicks), as well as the ladies vying for their affections. How does she do it? Through clothes!
“I’m styling myself,” she tells PEOPLE. “In general the clothes I’m wearing have a slightly androgynous, masculine edge … they are much less whimsical than what I wear on So You Think You Can Dance.”
Counting Helmut Lang, Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney among her go-to designers for the series, Deeley says her rule of thumb is, “‘Could I go and play pool in this and drink beers with the guys?'” she says. “I’ve always had a tomboy quality to my personality and I just chose to play up this facet for the show.”
Deeley, who doesn’t employ a stylist, says she marvels at Los Angeles fashion — but misses “eccentric” British style. “It’s totally unique and always lots of fun. Anything goes, from punk to ladylike chic.”
When she needs a High Street fix, Deeley turns to Very.com, a shopping website that brings British fashions stateside (she serves as a spokeswoman for the company). “I love High Street stores such as French Connection, Hoss Utopia and Reiss,” she says. “Even Kate Middleton is a fan! It makes it so easy to follow all the new trends and really have fun interpreting fashion in your own specific way.”
Even if that way means infusing some Angeleno vibes into her looks. “People here are not only fully accepting of leisure suits at dinner,” she jokes, “but also of bandage dresses in broad daylight.” Tell us: Do you dress according to fashion trends?
