Shailene Woodley: I Didn't Become an Actress to Wear Designer Gowns

It’s no secret that Shailene Woodley prefers comfort to couture (she did wear running shoes to a Golden Globes afterparty), but in the latest issue of ASOS magazine, she really hammers the fact home.

“My style … consists of sweats, sweats and sweats,” she shares. “Big baggy jeans — specifically jeans that you find in thrift stores that are obviously not made for women — those are the best because they’re super-comfy. And I love baggy sweaters, too.”

Her fashion favorites are a far cry from the dresses she wore on the red carpet this awards season. “The one thing that did get annoying was the constant use of makeup and fancy dresses,” she admits of the January and February shows. “It’s turned from this world of cinema to, ‘You’re not pretty enough, not skinny enough, not best-dressed enough.’ But I didn’t do The Descendants to wear a designer’s dress and a lot of makeup and get points from the fashion police.”

Still, she defends her fashion choices — particularly the Valentino Couture gown she wore to the Oscars. “A lot of people didn’t like it. But to me it felt classy and elegant and that’s what I think of when I think of the Oscars. It still represented who I am,” she says.

So who does she turn to for the occasional fashion inspiration? “Emma Watson kills it on the red carpet,” she says. “But she wears things that I could never — or ever want to — wear, so I think that’s why I admire her so much.”

And fictionally speaking? “I think Pocahontas always looked amazing, because she wore a tasteful amount of nakedness on her, and it was great and looked just so comfortable,” Woodley shares. “I would love to walk around the way she walked around.”

Good for her for sticking to her guns and not giving in the the crazy pressure to be something you’re not. She has great style when she wants to turn it on,

It is so refreshing to see someone that is not fake and full of themselves. A lot of these superficial actresses today could learn a lesson from this girl. GOOD FOR HER!

so who is she?

She does lack good clothing taste. But oh well, that’s what stylists are for.

I wish more young girls would dress in sweats and baggy sweaters instead of dressing like mini hookers.

It’s funny, Kristen Stewart made similar remarks at the beginning when Kristen was ripped to pieces for her dressing and wearing sneakers. Kristen said that she did not know anything about fashion and did not have a lot of clothes in her closet. Websites also said that stylists did not want to work with Kristen because she did not like fashion and makeup. Kristen was harshly criticized and although she has been learning as she has grown up she is still kind of a rebel. Nobody criticizes Shailene. Weird.

Her Valentino game was gorgeous – don’t know why she got flack for it. What a breath of fresh air, this girl. Hope she sticks to her guns so Hollywood doesn’t tarnish such a gem!

Way to go Shailene! You’re keeping it real!

Of COURSE, you didn’t become an actress just to wear designer gowns but NOW that you ARE an actress and a good one you NEED to dress like one. It goes with the territory. You need to get yourself a good stylist because the one you have sucks. You should dress better than you do and it IS in YOUR BEST interest.

We’re going to see more of Shailene in the near future, she is a great talent. I admire her down to earth attitude. She doesn’t need the designer clothes, Shailene is already a natural beauty all on her own.
