Cameron Diaz Cried After Chopping Her Hair

05/02/2012 at 06:00 PM ET

Cameron Diaz Hair
Splash News Online

Cameron Diaz recently told InStyle her short haircut was “freeing” — but she had very different words for Jay Leno Tuesday night.

“There was a little misunderstanding,” she explained on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno of her pre-Christmas cut. “I said, ‘Oh I just want a little bit off’ … and it went from here to here,” she added, gesturing two very different hair lengths.

Once Diaz saw the new do, her reaction wasn’t so pleasant. “I just burst into tears and started crying, and I felt so vulnerable,” she explained. “For a woman to all of a sudden have no hair, oh my god.”

What made the situation even more awkward was the fact that Diaz’s hairstylist happened to be a good friend. “I felt really bad, she felt really bad, she started crying, I started crying, a couple of other people started crying,” Diaz said. But soon the situation smoothed over. “I ended up writing her a few emails after, the next couple days, assuring her I wasn’t going to kill her.”

As Leno pointed out, it’s unique that Diaz gets her haircuts from a friend (in that friend’s kitchen, no less) — not at a chic Los Angeles salon. But the actress said she’s been getting kitchen haircuts from this friend — and her own mother — for quite some time. She joked, “I’m in her kitchen often with the cape around my neck, going, ‘I hope we’re not going to cook after that.’” Tell us: Would you let a friend cut your hair?

Oh gimme a break. I saw her on Leno last night and I couldn’t believe her telling him this exact story. No hair? WTF? She wore her hair like this years ago and personally, I think it looks good on her as a woman soon to be 40.

bbb on

There’s always a misunderstanding with hairdressers. I really believe they operate on a completely different measurement system than everyone else. You say 1 inch off they take 3, ask for 3 inches off of long hair you’ll end up with a bob. Hairdressers just can’t seem to resist cut cut cutting.

Sammi on

Her hair looks the same it always does…..COOL Cameron.

TINA on

SHE LOOKS BETTER WITH IT SHORT

chelsey on

i just lost all respect for this woman…seriously it is just hair and i have had 1/2 in of hair before so i know what no hair feels like…this woman is ridiculous…for a woman who is almost 40 she is still this self conscious it makes me want to gag!!! so vain

LEIGH ANN on

I think she looks better with short hair.

LEIGH ANN on

I think she looks great with short hair. It suits her.

Jny on

Cameron has a very beautiful face. She can wear her hair long or short and she’ll still look awesome. Saw her ‘Bad Teacher’ movie last night and I couldn’t stop laughing.

drea on

Oh please, all of a sudden she had no hair? Until you lose your hair from chemotherapy treatments, you have not right to make a statement like that. I like Cameron, but after this comment, she just appears to be another spoiled celebrity.

I love her short hair. Best cut she has had in ages! Nothing to cry about at all.

I love Cameron, but her hair was never thick and luxurious – ever. The cut makes her fine, straight hair look fuller and shows off her pretty face, something the stringy longer locks did not do. She should have jumped for joy!

What is the big deal? She has had shorter cuts than this! And really, did she expect to get a professional from a friend cutting her hair in the kitchen? Makes one wonder if said friend used a hedge clipper!

I just think it doesn’t have any shape to it whatsoever. Whoever cut it didn’t do her justice.
It looks limp with no body.

Thats really sad. Yea..for a woman to lose her hair. Really, lady? Try having cancer, not once but twive and then tell me
about it. Chemo took my hair away twice.

Stella on

I had that type of misunderstanding once but didn’t cry. I’ve heard so many women tell crying stories about their haircut. It’s just hair. My hair was below the shoulders, I asked for a trim and ended up with a naked neck. Months later, the hair grew down again. Besides, it’s not like Cameron Diaz can’t afford hair extensions and I’m pretty sure she’s used them plenty in her life.

My mom had chemo and lost all her hair and I feel confident in saying that to all the people complaining that they had chemo and Cameron should stop complaining, do you honestly think that just because you had chemo and lost all your hair that other people aren’t allowed to have feelings too? Get over YOURSELVES!! My mother lost all her hair and if I went and had all my hair accidentally chopped off I would cry too and it DOES NOT make me a bad person!!!

TopoftheLine on

She is not aging well … no matter what the hair length. And she has not married or had kids. Kind of sad really.

JuliaS on

It’s sad to see ladies think because she’s almost 40 she wear her hair shorter. Shows how brain washed we’ve become because of ageism. You should wear your hair in a way that gives you vitality whether it’s long or short no matter the age. But I agree her hair looks fine short.

Marlene Stewart on

Please, NO HAIR is when you lose all your hair because you are having chemotherapy. My husband has cut my hair in our bathroom for 25 years, even after it grew back from chemo! And I cut his.

Not a fan on

Grow up! Seriously, you’re 40 years old crying over a haircut. Shows what a self absorbed and narcissistic person you are! There are people in the world with real problems! It’s so sad to see someone who has no clue of how really blessed they are. I used to think Cameron Diaz was a cool and beautiful person now I realize she’s just another Hollywood moron.

weiner on

She looks tired. Her face has aged rapidly in the last year or two. Her hair looks nice though

Me on

Ok, this is pretty lame. She had that exact hairstyle in “There’s Something About Mary.” She’s no stranger to short hair. Publicity stunt?

Stranger on

Cameron the last time I ran into you we were on the wharf, and when I bumped into you after dinner your hair was short like it it is now, and I thought she looked better then she has in a long time.

Cameron, don’t let them tell you any different, your hair looks great and you are beautiful as always. And that offer for dinner still stand for the next time I am in San fran, you know how to find me.
Blue Eyes….

mel on

I agree with drea – as someone who just finished chemotherapy I know what it means to have no hair – anywhere! I cried when it started coming out in clumps – that is totally different than getting a short haircut. Give me a break

guest on

I thought it looked great. She used to wear it like that. She looks beautiful!

GildaGirl on

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

Bman on

Skip ALL you S T U P I D Broads who keep saying its no big deal. MEN Like LONG hair on a woman…and CD just Happens to KNOW that. Chopping off your hair will add 10 Years to you in the time it takes you to cut it. Only OLD non sexual women like Janet Reno should wear it short… So you silly women go ahead and rock your BARBARA BUSH haircut if you want to.

Jess on

How ridiculous, I’m sure by next week she’ll have long hair again. She’s a celebrity, they can pay for the extensions if they don’t like their haircut, unlike all us regular folk!

db on

I am a hairstylist…..and I usually cut my own hair….its true…most stylists are too busy running their mouths to pay attention…my clients complain I don’t take enough off…but I would rather cut it again than have an unhappy client….can’t put it back once its gone!!!!

Meg on

My mom and sister both lost hair from chemo. I had two sisters fight cancer and my mom died of it. This makes Cameron seem really superficial and shallow. It’s just hair. It grows back – and I have had my fair share of bad cuts.

Sarah on

I’m almost 39, and just the other day I had my hair cut at the salon where I go once in a blue moon to get a nice haircut (rather than cutting it myself). She cut it way too short, and for the past few days, I’ve hated seeing my reflection. It looked better before she cut it, and it has looked better after I’VE cut it myself.
So, no, I don’t think she’s just a “spoiled celebrity” as some have suggested. I know how a bad haircut can make you feel, and I was close to tears when I could not find a way to salvage my own bad haircut. It’ll grow out, though, and I’ll live.
The funny thing was my stylist kept saying, “I’m just loving this cut for you!” and I was thinking, “I want to like it . . . but I’m not there yet.” The only thing I could do to change it was to go shorter, and I didn’t want to do that, so I held my tongue, paid her (with a tip; she did her best), thanked her and left.

Susanna on

WTF! She felt so “vulnerable” because she had no hair? She had a whole head of hair. This is an insult to cancer patients everywhere!

Sadie on

Her friend did her a favor

Sadie on

Bman, in this case it took 10 years off of her. She was looking rough before the cut. Now she looks like she did 10 years ago.

madeira on

“For a woman to all of a sudden have no hair, oh my god.” CAMERON get real. You have hair. You want to know what it is like to loose your hair suddenly, I’ll let you talk to my sister who just lost it for the 2nd time because of treatment for breast cancer and now brain tumours. YOU CHOSE TO CUT YOUR HAIR.

Bets on

Lord have mercy…it’s just fricken hair.I have two sisters that when thru chemo.Breast cancer. One sis lost her hair twice. That is when you cry about a bad hair day…………..

jo on

Sad & disappointed in her – self-centered & vain. Lots of cancer patients would love to have hair that long. Shame, shame!

blutruffle on

I LOVE Cameron’s new hair style It makes her look much younger and really emphasizes her gorgeous eyes

tada on

Dear Drama Queen Cameron, move on!

John Donohue on

Oh this is a check flick.

Karen on

I like the new look! She can always add extensions to her hair.

Tiffany on

She looks amazing!!!! Short hair looks WAY better on her!!!! Just like when she started out and was young. Besides, she can always put in extensions!

Jon on

Hey, stuff happens, at least they made up in the end, it depends, maybe I’d let a friend cut my hair!

Yvette on

she has no idea what it is like to lose your hair. I wish I had hair like her–I lost mine during my recent chemo treatments—it’s a horrible thing to go through.

Eli on

She had this exact same hair in the Holiday and it is cute. Long hair ages her face. Obviously her hairdresser knew best.

Stef on

I’ve been a hairdresser for 17 years, and hair can be like a security blanket for some people, whether she’s had it that short before or not. She was just telling a story, yeah, some people cry when that happens. And let me get this straight, because there are people that have to go through chemo and are waiting to find out if they have cancer, she has to watch what she says about her own hair? Get off your high horses.

JD on

How sad that she is so consumed by her hair issues. I grew my hair for 6 years to get it long enough to send to LocksofLove.org. My long hair made me look ten years older than I am but I did it because it was important.

Shame on Ms. Diaz for being so shallow.

amy on

If I was her, it wouldn’t be my hair I’d be crying about. POOR Cameron!

JD on

@Stef, yes she needs to watch what she says as do you. As you said “I’ve been a hairdresser for 17 years, and hair can be like a security blanket for some people” you talked about Cancer and it is obvious that you haven’t dealt with a Cancer patient who is losing or has lost their hair. You have no idea how hard that is and damn straight you should be quiet and so should Ms. Diaz until you get the reality of people who have it much harder than you do.

I hope in the near future you will donate some time to help Cancer patients with their hair issues as it will give you a new perspective on your profession, your humanity (which at this time seems to be nil) and a passion for helping others who could be you in a heart beat.

I wish you the best and hope you become more grounded as to what is important.

Steve on

‘Until you lose your hair from chemotherapy treatments, you have not right to make a statement like that. ‘
I mean.. I was soooo thinking the same thing… until you have been in a head-on collision and been like TOTALLY decapitated you have no right to complain about a haircut.

Dee63 on

This is the most pathetic story. Try having cancer multiple times and your hair never having a chance to grow back! I now where amazing wigs that are very authentic, but she’s crying after a haircut when women are losing their hair through cancer and chemo? The woman needs a reality shot in the arm.

Lisa on

I think the new short hairstyle looks good on her. It is so silly for her to cry over it; especially when she looks better with shorter hair. She also has to realize that there are a lot of ladies out there who are losing or have lost all their hair due to illnesses and treatments and she has no right to make a statement about having no hair.

Stef on

@JD Uh, yes, I HAVE dealt with cancer and chemo patients, I’ve also lost several family members to different cancers. My salon also gives free haircuts to anyone donating to Locks of Love. So don’t tell me what I know or don’t know. What I was just saying was she was just relaying an antecdote about a misunderstanding with her haircut. Does that mean she shouldn’t talk about how stuffed she is from the huge meal she ate last night because of the starving children in third world countries?

Jael on

Pardon me, but if that picture depicts the haircut that sent Cameron Diaz into tears, then I have only one thing to say. That isn’t “no hair”. No hair would range between bald and a buzz cut. At least Diaz would have enough hair to tuck it back behind her ears.

Gaga on

Oh, come on Cameron! It’s not like you had a waist-length mane of luxurious locks! and it will grow back, I promise.

alane on

Really? Ever lost ALL your hair to chemotherapy?
After that, you put your life into perspective and
learn what is really important..losing a few inches of hair is so vain! Give me a break!!

belittlethebullies on

Ahh I would cry, too! Haha, I’m such a baby about getting my hair cut, even if it’s only a trim!

tmb1975 on

For Pete’s sake, Cameron, it’s a bob. You’re not bald. Try going through chemo like my MIL did and having to shop for wigs and hats and then cry about having no hair. Or picture yourself as a woman with alopecia who would kill to have a bob like that.

These stars are pathetic! Take some biotin and wait a few months and voila, your hair will return!

Jinny on

No, I totally feel her. I’m no fan of Cameron Diaz, but any woman who’s had a bad, or at least unexpected hair cut knows that it can be really horrifying. I’m not proud of it, but I’ve definitely cried on my way home from a really bad perm. It’s totallly silly, but it’s also kind of nice to hear a celebrity talking honestly about being shaken by such a small thing.

janet on

really? My husband shaved my head due to my chemo treatments? My 2 year old was part of the event and said I was beautiful. So special. Its hair.

For those bashing her and saying she’s vain because of her hair (and insinuating the same for all women who care about their hair), why don’t you think of the flip side? For some women their hair is something to hide behind for lack of self-esteem or whatever other reason. You cut their hair and there goes any sense of feeling good about themselves. No, hair is not always a vanity issue. It’s part of a person’s identity. Because it may not be an issue for you doesn’t mean it’s not an issue for others.

Kat on

I think she looks great, no matter what length her hair is. I too lost my hair to chemo and quite frankly…I loved it. No hairbrush, shampoo, hair products, root touch-ups every 6 weeks, trims, cuts or color. LOVED IT! No pun intended, but it shaved about an hour or so off a day – getting ready to leave the house. My husband took longer, and it wss a thrill to be nagging him to get ready for a change. Hair is vastly over-rated!

I will never understand the emphasis people put on their hair. It’s HAIR. It’s not a human or anything really important. And the great thing about it – it grows back, people. Wow. This world is really messed up if all people are focusing on is their hair. Hair does not make you who you are. It’s what’s on the inside that makes the person. get over it.

jenna on

No, this cut is different than the one years ago. Plus, if you don’t want your hair cut….it’s pretty devastating. I don’t like this cut on her. I’d been soooo mad if I asked for a trim then the hair ended up by my ears.

Mad isn’t even close.

jenna on

I love all the biatch comments on here. If it were any of “you,” you’d all be suing the stylist. Give me a break.

I can totally relate. It would be wonderful to find a hairdresser that had the same visions that you have. But in their defense, they are not miracle workers.

kg on

I think it looks good and at least it’s her own hair. But… if she is not happy, she should get in touch with whomever does Lindsay Lohan or the Kardashian sisters hair. They have enough fake hair on their heads for all of Hollywood.

Lisa on

I find it quite hypocritical when many a women has had a bad haircut and complained later to her friends about it. When you have long hair and expect for an inch and it cut that short it feels like all your hair is gone. Honestly people is their any need to be that mean and hateful. If anyone needs to rethink themselves is the people who have nothing better to do with their time then be hateful.

SB on

I think it’s pretty dumb to have the reaction that not only her, but her friend and a couple of others were crying because of a misunderstanding that left her hair shorter than she wanted. I had a friend diagnosed with breast cancer at 31 who cried when she started losing clumps of hair due to her treatments. Through everything she was incredibly brave and her wigs became great accessories. She had them in every color of the rainbow including hot pink, one of her favorites. Shame on People for even printing a story like this. Oh no, a rich celeb who can afford to have the best extensions put in, had her hair cut too short. Are you kidding?!

mickey on

I love Cameron’s hair like this. I do think most of us woman can relate though to saying to cut this much and having it cut a lot more then you asked. I’ve cried before after having that done. Then, like Cameron, you get used to it and actually start liking it. My friend has cut my hair at home now for over twenty years so I can also relate to that. lol

Lina on

Hey, I’m with CAmeron, I have been in that situation adn I cried like a little kid…you go there and say PLEASE JUST cut 1″ and suddenly when you look at the mirror is more than 4″..that reaction is natural in females that love long hair… same thing happened to my sister in law 2 weeks ago and she cried for days looooool…then we get used to it ..

krisczer on

Can’t believe the amount of rude comments below, geeze. And on the real topic, I would have cried too if someone cut my hair off like that & it wasn’t what I wanted. I actually have cried before when my hair was cut wrong, I knew it was silly, it’s just hair but still. I don’t see anything wrong w/her reaction. But don’t worry Cam, it’ll grow back!!

J on

If that is all one has to cry about in life, they are doing pretty good. Signed: indigent, abuse survivor/elderly family member caregiver, not actress/model.

I take great offense to the comments generalizing all hairdressers as basically butchers. I have been a Cosmetologist for almost 20 yrs now and I have NEVER had ANYONE complain I didn’t listen to them or cut too much off. Don’t stereotype people , unless you want to find yourself stereotyped.

Jess on

What’s with the criticism? I know that every single woman would cry if they lost several more inches of hair than they had wanted. Cry and rant and demand it be fixed even if they can’t. Stop saying she’s some petty woman because chemo people don’t have hair. Are you going to begrudge her food because there are starving kids in Ethiopia too? Give the woman a break! nacho on

Give me a break!! Does she can cancer? Is she going through Chemo, does she have alopecia ??? Trichotilomaia?? Until then she can please shut the F up about not having any hair.

charlotte on

I don’t see what the drama was about, she’s had her hair even shorter than this before.

Drea,

I totally agree with you. You stated exactly what I was thinking. It’s hair. It’ll grow back if you don’t like it. At least she has that option. She needs to stop whining & being overly dramatic about such a trivial thing as a haircut.

What haircut? Looks the same to me.

Sorry, but this story is annoying. I am 32 and had to go through chemo last year for breast cancer and I lost ALL my hair. I can only WISH that my hair was as long as hers is right now.

I think Cameron needs to visit some women who have alopecia. Maybe then she will see how foolish she is to place so much emphasis on her hair.

Oh puhleeze! That is SO SHALLOW of her to worry about a lil haircut. It’s really NOT a bad haircut.
AND it will grow back – or she can always afford to add hair extensions. DRAMA QUEEN!

I hope by now she’s also thanked that hairdresser for doing her such a favor – her hair looks so much healthier now! She is such a fan of bleached-blonde hair, but it often looked brittle at her longer lengths – now it is still white-blonde but in much better condition. Cameron looks terrific.

It doesn’t matter what length she cuts her hair — you can’t fix that face of hers! Scary!

honestly, this happens more often than you would think. you politely give your hair dresser instructions on the look you’re going for, yet you may as well have said “take complete creative control”. and no, you don’t have to be a vapid self-absorbed woman to care this much about your hair. just like you don’t have to be a fashion victim to be upset when a favorite article of clothing is ruined or be a snobbish eater to be a bit angry when a restaurant completely messes up an order that you still have to pay for or are forced to eat. Everyone’s allowed to get a little bit upset during a moment when something doesn’t go as planned. As long as we don’t stay bitter about a small mistake and can laugh it off later, i don’t see a problem with having a little self-pity during those tricky moments.

Welll she must not have looked in the mirror much because now she looks her age and looks younger than she did with the longer hair. Her long stringy hair made her look older. She looks much better now.

Try 6 rounds of chemo and you will see what no hair looks like.

Ranma on

All of you who say this is nothing compared to getting chemo, I bet it was sad to have hair taken away too. But yes, Cameron didn’t have to get that dramatic because her hairstyle wasn’t cut that short at all.

And no, not all men like long hair. Some look edgier or better with short hair.

stacy on

no way did she not know she was going to get the much off!!!!! as a hair stylist myself i always double check that the client is sure about getting allot of length cut off, especially as much as she did. It was probably a spur of the moment kinda thing and hated it afterwards and decided to blame it on her stylists. Either way i love Cameron as an actress and think shes a great person and I lovethe cut!

I think she looks better with the shorter hair and I also think she is acting totally ridiculous! It is not like her hair is not going to grow out. She feels vulnerable? melissa on

WOW!! She makes a comment about a misuderstanding and how she was upset and didn’t expect to have shorter hair and everyone is going to jump on the cancer chemo train and say she can’t feel that way if she didn’t lose it that way or say hurtful things about her not being married and having kids. Not everyone wants that in their life, what does that say about you to think they do. Maybe she didn’t want to marry or have her own kids. None of those things make her a bad person or a selfish person. It actually makes her human. I’ve experienced all the things cancer brings and it teaches you compassion and strength. It not something you should use to make others feel wrong about how they feel about something because they didn’t experience it. She was upset she has every right to feel that way and express it. you should all get over it.
