Nicole Richie Isn’t a Label Slave

As a Fashion Star mentor she helps designers create looks that will have mass appeal, but when it comes to shopping for her own closet, Nicole Richie strikes the perfect balance between high and low.

“I shop at more expensive stores and I also shop at thrift stores,” she told PEOPLE at an H&M Fashion Star party in New York Tuesday. “Most of my vintage T-shirts and peasant dresses, they’re like $10. There’s not a specific store that I go to or any label that I’m obsessed with buying.” (One of her recent budget-friendly purchases? A dress from Fashion Star contestant Sarah Parrott, which H&M purchased off the show.)

However, when Richie likes an item, she really likes it. “Fashion is a form of self expression and it’s really about how an article of clothing makes you feel,” she explained. “If I like a dress that I’m wearing, I will wear it until it’s falling off of me and someone’s like, ‘You’ve got to take off that dress.’”

For a summer go-to, Richie suggests accessories like headpieces and scarves. “I love to take vintage scarves and tie them around my head, especially because I have curly hair and don’t always have time to do my hair,” she explained. “My trick for people is always to get a head scarf — whatever looks good to you.”

And though she’s good at dishing advice, Richie said she remembers some great tips she’s received about fashion, too. The best? “Constantly be open to learning,” she revealed. “Starting a brand is something beyond just being an artist. I’m constantly telling designers … you can be the greatest artist and designer in the world and create a fabulous gown, but unless you have the business side, you’re not going to last. It’s important to balance the two.”

I love her too!

she is so pretty!!

People, you might want to reconsider your headline. Really? Using slave to compare an African American person?

Jennifer on

Ok, complain about me all you want — but I see MUCH prettier people everyday just walking down the street or in the mall. This woman is an average nobody, who’s only gotten by on her dad’s actual talent.

Cindy on

Amanda – she’s not black…she was adopted by Lionel. She’s actually Hispanic – her given name was Nicole Camille Escovedo

MissTmc on

In response to Cindy – Nicole is actually of Hispanic, Caucasion and African American descent. Being the adopted daughter of African American parents, she may have been culturally indoctrinated as an African American as well. So, in some respects I can see Amanda’s point in using “slave” in the headline. Although many African Americans would not take offense to using this word in context with fashion (“label slave”, “slave to fashion”), there are still some who might be sensitive to references of any sort. So, in the interest of being courteous, it probably isn’t the best word to use.

Jennifer, she isn’t the only one getting by on a fathers talent! Look at Kelly Osbourne. She has absolutely no talent living off the father. Paris Hilton, living off her grandfather millions. Their are patents living off their kids names too: Dina Lohan, Michael Lohan, Kris Jenner [too bad she lives off untalented kids], the list goes on.

Me on

Highly doubt this! Like the other rich girls, she was always the first to wear those big Chanel, Gucci, Luis Vuitton etc. symbols. Let’s not backtrack to seem approachable.

me: Let’ start reading the entire article for a change. She clearly says she shops at vintage shops AS WELL AS more expensive ones. This implies that YES she shops at Gucci but ALSO means that she shops at cheaper places. Just a little reading comprehension should have made that clear to you.

And if you look closely at the pic, you will see the sign of extensions..I’m wondering what’s going on with her hair??

Why am I reading this? Because I have no life.

Honestly, I think the days of comparing Nicole to people like Paris Hilton, and others of like ilk, are over. Nicole is a wife and mother, who appears to be doing a great job as both. She works as a designer, and she has shown that she learned a lot about living more economically than when she was a teen or early 20′s.

Why do so many posters act as if having money is something others should hate or resent? So she has money; whatever. Lucky her, she was adopted by Lionel Richie and his former wife. She learned a lot from being raised by him, and as far as being a crazy teen; many teens are crazy! Having a few made me a tad less judgmental than some of you, I guess. She seems to be much more mature and intelligent about how she lives her life than many of her former friends.

Why do some people feel the need to denigrate Paris Hilton while making for others?

Paris earns her own millions from her 17 different business brands, and this June she is coming out with her 15th fragrance.

She has over 7 million followers as of this writing.

She bought her own mansion years ago and does Not live off her grandfather.

As posters here are pointing out, having been wild in the past does not mean a person can’t be successful later on in life.

Where does SHE state that she identifies as African American or Hispanic? Just like Leni Klum who was adopted by Seal, Nicole Richie’s ethnic identity is her choice. Sorry, guys, but this isn’t 1840 and she has the same rights as anyone else to be fully assimilated into the mainstream culture or whatever “pocket” or niche that she feels comfortable. That might include “Hollywood bohemian”.

Patty on

Amanda,

What are your sources for applying an ethnic label? You are a bit presumptious in thinking that you can assess someoone’s ethic identification. Ethnic identification like gender/sexual identification is a private matter.
