Katy Perry vs. Kelly Osbourne: Whose Purple Hair Do You Prefer?

It’s a purple reign: both Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne dyed their hair purple this week, setting off a new mini-trend.

According to Perry’s stylist, Rita Hazan, the pop star’s longer hair is “purple velvet,” InStyle.com reports. “It’s dark and rich. It’s very punk rock. I love creating colors for her because she always knows how to rock it,” Hazan adds.

Osbourne went purple on Tuesday, Tweeting the process to fans. Earlier this year, after she added a bit of lavender to her gray locks, she told PEOPLE, “I think that I have an addiction to dying my hair, because I always like it to be different. I don’t like being compared to other people.” (Sorry, Kelly, we’re going to do it anyway!) Tell us: Who works her purple best, Katy or Kelly?

I’m so glad Kelly Osbourne changed her hair colour.I don’t even care what color she dyed it as long as the old color is gone. It does not look lavender on TV it looks grey. I often wondered when I saw her on Fashion Police why a young girl would want to dye her hair grey because thats how it comes across on TV. I spend so much money getting the grey out of my hair so I couldn’t understand why someone would actually dye it that color.

TN on

Sorry, I like both ladies but not the hair colors.

Jenn on

my 15 year old has been begging for months wanting purple hi-lite’s… I just can’t let her do it, maybe I should give in???

Guest on

This just seems childish. Purple hair? Grow up.

guest on

No Jenn, stick to your guns. If you don’t want her to have purple hair then say no. :)

Kitchy on

I loved Kelly’s lavender hair, but I like this too. I like it more on her than Katy’s because Katy’s “unnatural” colors always look somehow off to me, like she’s trying too hard, and plus I think she’s so much prettier with a deep brown color. However, Kelly’s make-up particularly the lipstick, is absolutely awful. So I guess as an overall look, I’d choose Katy, but based on hair alone, Kelly.

Jenn, I personally have no problem with letting my daughter put streaks in her hair, but if you don’t want yours to, that’s your choice as a mom. You make the decision based on what you want or don’t want, not what others think. :)

Tammy on

Jenn, you’re her mom so it’s certainly your decision but I don’t think purple highlights are a big deal for a 15-year-old girl. If that’s the worst she does, she’s a pretty darn good kid!

Guest on

I’m surprised either of these woman still has any hair left to dye! Those chemicals are SO hard on the hair. Ridiculous!

Guest on

@Kitchy-So when you’re daughter starts asking if she can do body piercing’s, tattoos, wearing skirts up to her crotch, are you going to let her do those things as well? Just wondering. We parents are the first teachers of our children, and if we let them do anything they want, problems are on the rise down the road. I don’t have a problem with streaking hair, but why not something that actually looks nice and is not there to say, “hey I need attention, look at me”. I don’t know you, but most of the time that’s why kids want to do this stuff, for attention. Just my opinion.

Kim on

My personal opinion is that you should let your kids color their hair. If that is the worst that they ever do, it will grow out. Then they fulfill that need to be unique.

Kathy on

Jenn, I did let my kids dye their hair at that age. I always tried to remind myself that its just hair and it will grow back. I did stand my ground when they wanted their noses pierced, etc, as that is permanent. I reminded them how cool I was about their hair every time I heard “you never let me do anything” also……

Me on

Last year, I had purple highlights put in. Just one strand, just enough so that it popped out of my blonde hair. It looked awesome. And the fact that I had purple hair didn’t lead to me wearing skirts up to my crotch or getting any body piercings or tattoos. It’s hair. It looked great. I enjoyed the look for six months and then went back to my usual highlights. No big deal.

mrsmass on

it’s not letting them be unique if it’s a current trend.

Since I’m in the middle of the Hunger Games series, people with colorful hair and makeup remind me of the idiots that live in the Capitol. God gave you the hair color that looks best with your skin tone and eyes. We are just too spoiled to appreciate it. Both celebs would look a lot prettier with their natural hair. Right now they just look like dolls that a 5 year old has dressed up.

an on

Can I say neither?

Both girls are pretty but not really feeling the blue/purple hair…Katy looks best with BLACK though.

Jessilyn on

I’m just go ahead and say that purple hair looks good on NO ONE. I’m a fan of looking natural, not like a cartoon character.

Sara on

They both look dumb and both wear far to much make-up!!!

Wendy on

Hey Jenn- what about the clip in purple streaks?

MB on

Is it just me or does Kelly Osbourne kind of look like a toned down Effie from the Hunger Games??

thetruth on

Wow….they both have the same hair color as my 16 year-old cousin….and they’re how old? FYI Kelly, you can be different without looking like a mature clown.

dd on

looks weird on both of them..purple is not natural looking unless you are some exotic bird..

Jennifer on

I like the vibrancy in Katy’s hair but love the suttleness in Kelly’s…. 50/50 flip here

guest on

jenn My daughter had a purple peekaboo and bangs it looked realy cute its only hair the color can be taken out if you dont like it.

JosieCat on

Anything on Kelly is better than the lavender. That looked HORRIBLE.

I think Katy looks so good as just a plain brunette. But I think this looks better than the blue.

Brandy on

All of you people saying “oh let her do it, it will grow out, it full fills her desire to be unique, if thats the worst she is still good, let kids dye their hair” No 15 year old needs to be going around with purple or whatever unnatural color in their hair. My sister was 15 and she wanted her hair blue…my mom gave in. It’s only the beginning, next(just like my sister)they will want peircings and tattoos and use your “desire to be unique” defense against you. You are their PARENT not their friend.

Teresa on

Kitchy ~ Why not get the clips for her that are colored hair in all shades. Its a compromise. I think that kids want to do things to fit in. I have raised 2 well adjusted, college grad kids and they both colored their hair and it never went farther than that. I said no to body piercings and tatoos. Hair it washes out and it grows out. Its not the end of the world.

Alicia on

I want purple hair and I am 39yrs old. I love that color.

Trena on

i would perfer both of them with normal color i bet they would look so much better

baby on

Like the hair on both..But I noticed katy’s eyes first. The one on the left is droopy.LOL

Kayle on

Jenn, let her do it shes a kid and its not like its going to hurt her or it is permanent like a tattoo. Its really not that big a deal just for fun:) And yes I am a mother of four grown girls I let them do it and they have turned out fine:)

To all of those of you who are bashing on Jenn and the ones giveing her “laid back “advise……. It may not be natural (i respect the fact that you like the natural “god” given colors we are born with) but guess what, you are neither THEIR mother or friends, so keep your rude comments to yourself. Dying your hair, no matter the age, doesnt results in the need to become tattooed, pierced or promiscuous……. i had my hair many many different “unnatural” colors when i was younger and i never had thought of these things. Guaranteed that IF they end up tattooed, pierces or promiscuous, they were in that state of mind before hand, and even if not, i highly doubt their first thought at seeing colors in the rainbow is ” Gee, seeing the color green or ocean blue makes me want to have sex and get tattoos” You tell them to grow up and be a parent, not a friend– Who knew that YOU were the one who thought for all of us? you obviously dont think outside the box and are very single minded- I bet you’d like life more if you werent so closed in.

Ladybug on

They both look fine, but they need to stop
dyeing their hair one color after another.
Soon it will all fall out.

Curl on

I don’t like either one!

guest on

Semi-permanent and demi-permanent hair dye, the most common forms of dye for the “unnatural colors,” doesn’t hurt your hair because it doesn’t chemically alter it. It rests on top of your hair’s protein coating sort of like a paint, which is why it fades out over time.

What *does* affect your hair is bleaching, and all of these “natural-colored” dyes you see at places like Walmart, Kroger, or in the salons. If there is a developer creme involved, you are stripping the natural proteins from your hair. You can do protein treatments to counteract that, though.

I don’t LOVE either, but if I had to pick I’d say Kelly’s. I think al lof Katie Perry’s hair colors look like they were done with food coloring. The blue she had previously, was horrible. She’s so beautiful too. If anything she should just go back to her normal & do a few fun streaks of color, not her whole head.

Josie on

Lose the purple, it looks clown-ish.

artbyxandra on

Kelly is awesome and her mom Sharon is an incredible woman! Katy Perry sucks big time!

To be completely honest, I can’t stand Katy perry and really wanted to say Kelly. But it does look better on her. Not to mention I personally think Kelly’s lipstick clashes. Both of these girls dye their hair so often I honestly can’t take their beauty seriously. I think it’s much cuter when a girl has a fun time with color for a bit, as a fun experiment, just once or twice. But to constantly be changing hues from one rainbow shade to the next eventually gets boring, kind of contradicting the point in the first place.

Your 15 year old is old enough to make her own decisions regarding her hair

It’s just hair, it’s not like she’s cutting her arm off.

Don’t be ridiculous, dyeing hair a funky colour is NOWHERE in the same league as piercings and tattoos

If you haven’t tried going into a Sally Beauty Supply store, I suggest you try it. They have sreaevl brands that provide coverage for gray hair. I like ION and L’Oreal the best. They also sell something called Gray Magic. You put this stuff in with your hair color and apply to your head. It helps hold the color a little longer on those stubborn grays. I assume you are using permanent color, and keeping it on for the full time usually 45 minutes. To avoid damage to your hair, you really shouldn’t color your entire head just the new growth (assuming you use the same color). You can always run the remaining color down the ends for the last 15 minutes.
