“They made me feel like a princess every week that I danced,” Lake tells PEOPLE of Gschwendtner’s team. “I had no doubt that Daniela was going to create something that would show me off the best and make me feel beautiful, and she did.”
In February, the bride and the designer had a secret consultation at the DWTS studio. After looking at photos and swatches from the show, Gschwendtner combined some of Lake’s favorite styles to create the gown’s silhouette.
“We went with something that was half a summer dress and half a wedding gown,” Gschwendtner tells PEOPLE of the look. “It’s very soft, very romantic.”

One side of the dress is slightly peach and the other more cream, the designer adds, and “it all comes together at the waist with a darker peach accent for a little bit of color variation.”
The bride’s one request? “A corset,” Gschwendtner says. “Not heavy-duty or uncomfortable but one to give a little shape.”
For her five dress fittings, Lake says she tried to slip into the DWTS wardrobe department unnoticed. “It was quite a feat,” Lake jokes. “One day, I was hiding in the wardrobe room not wanting to be discovered.”
But the sneaking around was worth it once Lake put on the gown. “She got teary-eyed,” Gschwendtner says of the emotional first fitting. “I think she loved it and it started to sink in that she was actually getting married and this was the wedding dress.” For more photos of Lake’s wedding, pick up the April 23 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.
