A 30-carat Rock? Not quite, but the engagement ring Alec Baldwin presented to girlfriend Hilaria Thomas over the weekend definitely is stunning. The bauble — seen on Thomas Monday while she was out in New York — features what appears to be a square-cut diamond set on a diamond-covered band.

“Yes, it’s true! Alec proposed to Hilaria this weekend and we’re all excited for the newly engaged couple,” a rep for Baldwin tells PEOPLE. “Alec’s birthday is tomorrow — great way to celebrate!”

The 30 Rock star began dating Thomas, a yoga instructor, last summer.

“I’ve got a woman in my life now,” the actor said of his love not long ago. “My girlfriend is very important to me.”

Baldwin was previously married to actress Kim Basinger, with whom he has a 16-year-old daughter, Ireland.

I’m not one that cares too much for age differences…but to a point. He’s 54, she’s 28, and his daughter is 16. When your partner’s age is closer to your kid’s age than yours…that’s when you get into the icky area.

Her ring is lovely; at least it looks appropriate and not like something completely oversized and gaudy to the point of saying, “What are they trying to prove?” I would rather see someone with a ring that doesn’t look so over-the-top it makes them a target. Gorgeous! Hope they are happy; don’t think he and Kim were such a good match, sad to say.

Double standard: If this were the other way around, the story would be all about the age difference between the “cougar” and her fiancee. What’s male for “cougar”? Male. Funny how that goes.

Is that a wig she’s wearing? Her hair looks like it’s plastic or a weave. That guy is nuts to give away his fortune to a girl he’s known only a year. He does NOT know her. She’s a gold digger plain and simple. I read on another site he bought her a 14 million dollar apartment after only knowing her for six months.. He thinks he’ going to die. I heard him say so on a radio interview. His dad died when he was 55. He thinks the same will happen to him. He has some weird issues. Rushing into marry a shameless gold digger isn’t going to prevent his death, which is highly unlikely. His father died because he was poor. It will prevent his daughter from getting what she should from him. If any of these people were Alec’s friends they’d tell him to put on the brakes. There’s no reason for him to marry her so soon. She hasn’t proven anything except that she’s a moocher that takes gifts that no decent woman ever would.

This is starting to look like a major contest to see who can give their gals the biggest or best rings compared to others. At first it was okay but now they are all starting to look alike to me. Maybe it is just me – but really isnt it the sentiment behind it that counts.

I usually like Alex…though I don’t know what to think about his airplane fiasco…as far as him dating someone SO young…YAWN…so sick of the older man/younger woman B.S.
IF and I say IF they are really in love and it’s not just him being an Old fool Pig and Her being into his money…then I wish them Happiness…if not…so sad! My aunt was 19 when she married my uncle who was 55 with 5 children, some older than my aunt. They were married for more than 30 years, until he died, and were very happy. She loved him dearly and he loved her. Showed me that many people love each other, regardless of their ages, and can be very happy. They had 2 children together, she had a great career, and all her step-children seemed to really love her; they got together with the whole family each weekend. My aunt was anything but a gold-digger, for sure.
