Natalie is no longer vegan.

What are “conflict-free” stones????

bh on

Slow news day.

Brenda on

ebb – “Conflict-free aka Blood Diamonds” are diamonds mined in a war-zone to finance insergency, most often in Africa. Check out the movie “Blood Diamond” with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Congrats to them!

Sandy on

conflict free stones!? are you kidding me?
the terms we have today are just plain sickening.

Mean Girl on

I love when stars say they want to be earth friendly, but at the same time fly around in private jets and own 4 huge homes that eat up resources. Earth friendly my tail!

venus on

The “Blood Diamonds” are CONFLICT diamonds, not Conflict-Free. Conflict-Free indicates that they DO NOT come from the mines used by the insurgents.

Mary on

Brenda – you’re a little confused. Conflict-free diamonds are the opposite of Blood Diamonds – they are mined in areas where the operations are not used to finance insurgencies or other military activities, or oppressive regimes. And Sandy – why is the term ridiculous? It is the same as buying fair-trade coffee, or non-sweatshop clothing. It’s important to try to ensure that what you are purchasing isn’t contributing to the pain and suffering of other people.

Bean on

Natalie went vegetarian for her pregnancy, but I’m sure she’s back to being vegan. She’s even working on a vegan themed documentary so why on earth would she be doing that if she weren’t a vegan anymore?

wayne on

“Conflict-free” would seem to mean the opposite Brenda. Conflict diamonds are what you are describing. Conflict-free are ones that ostensibly do not come from war-zones and are not mined with forced labor. I think it’s all pretty gray though. If you didn’t see it coming out of the ground there is still a decent chance that you got a conflict diamond that was laundered through a “legitimate” source (as they were trying to do in blood diamond).

Lori on

WHY do they have to use the word ‘sparkler’ for *every* *single* *article* about an engagement ring??? Get a thesaurus People!!

Just My Opinion on

@ Sandy, I agree with you 100%. Soone has something to say about any and everything.

Donna Glaser on

I wish we had a better (bigger) picture of her ring. Good for her using conflict free diamonds! I wish more people could/would do that!

Wow, People Magazine…way to remove my comment that was not offensive in any way. Awesome.

congrats to them, I didn’t like her a few minutes last year but she redeemed herself

Mary on

Maybe I should be from Missouri, but until the couple themselves say they are married, even though they are wearing “wedding rings”, you cannot be absolutely positive.

Pretty rings though.

Canada on

For those who asked. Conflict Diamonds or blood-diamonds are mined in countries that used the proceeds from the sale of those diamonds to fund a war, usually a civil war or genocide. Conflict-free of course would mean they were not.

For others, Natalie is very eco-friendly and does not have 4 houses or a private jet. She’s probably doing as much or more than the people who are complaining about her are doing to help the planet.

Daisy on

She looks incredible. He needs to grow his hair out a wee bit.

very wrong of this designer to speak on the rings.
that is not how you keep a customer.
i bet this wont be one of ben’s close friends anymore.

Antique diamond for the center stone. Arent all mined stones antique since they were made millions of years ago. Just saying…..

I have loved that young woman since I saw her in the movie “The Professional”. She is a wonderful actress and a wonderful person. We often forget that actors/actresses are just people who make a living at “acting” out a story. I am happy for them. She is a DOLL.

Char on

Meangirl do you have sources that show that she is a private jet flying, 4 home owning celebrity.. if not then you shouldn’t make blanket statements.

Oh, conflict free stones. Please, maybe the money didn’t go to some rebel fighter, but to the boss man. Either way, if the stones came from Africa, they were dug by slaves toiling 14 hours a day to barely feed his family. And the money lined the pockets of millionaire dictator/war lords.

The only “guilt free” diamonds come from western countries that pay reasonable wages. But these diamond merchants will tell you that a stone comes from Mars if they think you’ll buy it.

If they refer to the other diamonds as “blood diamonds”, then these ones should be called nonblood diamonds. Any African diamond mining is full of conflicts, not to mention the shameful way they pay the Africans.

hitokirihoshi on

that’s nice that Natalie got the best ring for her. anyway, the ring is symbolical.

Mean Girl: Natalie Portman actually practices what she preaches for the most part. She doesn’t own a multitude of homes. She has ONE apartment in NY. She doesn’t own jets either. Because of her job she does fly frequently but she uses commercial planes. She also donates significant money to various eco charities. While usually you are correct (ahem Al Gore) Natalie Portman is one of the few who is legit she does the best she can given her job.

Myshadozmerlin on

to Brenda and ebb … the sale of blood diamonds is used to finance violence. Conflict-free diamonds are those mined in conditions wholly-free from bloodshed, regardless of the cause.

Blood Diamonds = BAD
Conflict-free Diamonds = GOOD

Trixie on

“Conflict-Free” diamonds are not “aka Blood Diamonds”! Just the opposite.”Conflict Free” diamonds (stones) are mined in a way that does not support political agendas which often lead to violence, bloodshed, murder etc.
