Whether rocking a $35 frock or a myriad of designer duds, Michelle Obama‘s wardrobe choices always turn heads.

Last night’s State of the Union ensemble was no exception. As the President declared his intent to help buoy the 99 percent (“Asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes? Most Americans would call that common sense,” he declared), his wife dazzled in a cobalt sheath from Barbara Tfank’s resort collection.

While reps for the brand won’t reveal the item’s retail price, a similar style from the collection is currently available at Barneys New York for $2,400.

This isn’t the first time the First Lady has worn the Los Angeles-based designer’s sophisticated wares. Last year, she met with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wearing a seafoam brocade design topped with a bubblegum pink stole.

“Everything in my closet is something that I love,” Obama has said. “So that I can make choices based on what makes sense, knowing that I’m going to love whatever it is.”

Love all the haters…you’re entertaining to me. If any of you think that every other first lady before her ever shopped at J. Crew or Target for their clothing, you’re all judgmental fools. I don’t care who we put in the white house, they’ll never be good enough to please everyone. I’m sure he’s doing the best job he can with what he has to work with! Just like every president before him. He’s the President of the United States, he deserves respect.

you people are all crazy. the Obamas can’t do anything right… when the woman wears J. Crew and similarly priced brands, she’s cheap and tacky. when she wears expensive brands, she’s a hypocrite. when she tries to encourage children to exercise and eat healthy, she hates fat people. i think there is a term for all of you and it rhymes with ‘schmacist.’

and as Toni pointed out… we don’t even have any idea how much the dress actually cost. whoever wrote this article set it up to be blatantly combative as it says they priced out a ‘similar’ frock on the website. what if the first lady’s dress is from a few seasons ago? what if its more than 75% off? this is tort journalism at its worst. people, you disgust me

I do wonder if the designer let’s her wear the dress for free so he/she can get their name out there, I am sure it is exciting to have the first lady wear one of their designs. She looks very pretty in the dress.

…back to reality, not everyone in this country can afford something like this, some can, some can’t … what ppl choose to do with their own hard earned money is their choice. but for the woman named MONA insulting ppl that make minimum wage, you should be ASHAMED of yourself. Sad. Ppl like you need to move to a different country.

As usual the right “haters” will find anything to criticize, no matter how insignificant or trivial. First of all -this is the First Lady at a National event. She SHOULD be wearing something elegant and tasteful. There is nothing she can wear that will appease everyone- after all, even Walmart is too expensive for some Americans. Second- in the fashion world a $2,000 dress is not considered terribly expensive. Do you honestly think the clothing worn by Mrs.Gingrich and Mrs.Romney are costing any less than this? Finally, just because this dress would go for $2,400 retail does that mean she paid that amount? It may have been given to her by the designer. Maybe she got a special price. We actually have no idea what she spent- OF HER OWN MONEY!- So without any facts-shame on those who judge. Typical.

@Dena i guess you weren’t aware that we had a democratic run congress most of those years!!

The dress is beautiful and truth be told, she probably didn’t pay for it and either did tax payers. Designers offer clothes like this to people who are in the spotlight to get their name and designs out there.

She most likely didn’t pay for this dress. Celebrities give free PR to designers…. And if she did buy it, if you have the money, buy what you want.

Some of you are just ridiculous. The Obamas were rich way before they made it to the White House, so no, you are not funding her wardrobe. Find better things to worry about.
