Cynthia Nixon’s Bald Head Requires Daily Shaves

01/24/2012 at 04:30 PM ET

Cynthia Nixon Bald

What would Miranda say? Cynthia Nixon recently went bald for her role as a cancer-stricken professor in the new Broadway play Wit, and showcased her newly shorn head on LIVE! with Kelly Tuesday morning.

“I thought it was going to be kind of no-muss, no-fuss, but I have to shave it every day,” Nixon revealed. “It’s got kind of a five o’clock shadow. You don’t want to go out with that.”

When host Kelly Ripa complimented Nixon on the shape of her head, the actress admitted that she wasn’t sure she’d be able to pull the look off at first. “I was always kind of curious to see what it would be like,” she shared. But once the play is over, don’t expect her to keep up with the daily shaves. “I don’t think I’m going to keep it forever,” she added.

Wit tells the story of Vivian Bearing, a poetry professor “at the top of her profession,” Nixon explained. After receiving a cancer diagnosis — which Nixon, a breast cancer survivor, can relate to — Bearing “goes through this really heavy-duty chemo,” Nixon said. “She meets that challenge, but she learns a lot about herself.” The play is in previews, and opens officially on Jan. 26.

Wow.Now that is something I could never do.Kudos to her.But there is nothing I’d voluntarily shave my head for.

With the myriad of misdiagnosis by the medical profession, nearly every woman is either at risk of breast cancer or a breast cancer survivor.
To me it is sad that the acting profession will exploit each and every situation to make money for themselves and their staff.

A reminder: Emma Thompson played the lead in the 2001 movie based on the play. This article makes it sound brand new…perhaps on Broadway for the first time?

Mary, Emma Thompson also did the stage version of this play off-Broadway before she did the movie of Wit…both were heart-breaking and wonderful to watch at the same time…

But this isn’t a “new” play. I can remember Judith Light shaving her head for this part years ago when she performed in it.

I have liked her since SATC and I admire her so much for shaving her head and not wearing a bald cap!!!

Gee, I usually prefer imperfection over perfection but the shape of her head is an absolute perfection, no bumps, perfect arch and kudos for her devotion to her craft.

She looks great without hair. I could never pull it off, my head is huuuuge!

She must be crazy! There are skin caps she can wear while in production. It takes a long time for hair to grow back.

I shaved my head to support my son when he had cancer and I liked it; easy-care and no bedhead, hat hair, wind-blown hair,no flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers, dyes, gels, mousse, etc. and saves time and $$$$ on styling. It’s very liberating, actually! It’s also unique, gets people talking, brings up cancer awareness, and challenges society’s idea of beauty in women.

She’s a nutbag.

Is she wearing a towel?

Emma Thompson was brilliant in the film version of Wit and it’s a beautiful story. Kudos to Cynthia Nixon for actually shaving her head for it.

@arnaux – I’m not sure how Hollywood is exploiting cancer with this story. Often stories like this only increase awareness and are an important part of our culture.

Em on

Hard look to pull off and she pulls it off very well–kudos to her taking on serious roles and being a survivor.

Didn’t Emma Thompson do a similar role already? Is this a full time show, or a movie… Shaving your head every day is a hassle.

To Arnaux:
Your comment makes no sense. What does a “myriad of misdiagnosis” have anything to do with a woman’s chance of breast cancer. I am a physician and all too often see people ignorantly postulating about various things that they then propagate as fact. To others, please don’t take any of this person’s advice or commentary. He/she has no business and obviously no expertise.
