Watch that lighter, Cinna! Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive first look at Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark’s (Josh Hutcherson) flammable black Hunger Games unitards — and though unlit, they’re pretty cool. The costumes, designed in party by Everdeen’s stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), are eventually set aflame, and the two young stars dazzle the people of Panem as they ride through town the night before the games begin.

Last month, InStyle asked several designers to imagine the fiery costumes, with Christian Siriano, Charlotte Ronson and Nicole Miller creating super-cool yellow, orange and red interpretations of the look. Though we’ll have to wait until the film’s release on March 23rd to see the costumes aglow, this first look is definitely getting us excited. Tell us: How did you envision the flammable costumes?

I am not liking these. It is not what I pictured at all. I can’t even describe what I was picturing but it was not black. I was picturing maybe cream and orange and gold.

Dash on

The more pictures I see of this movie the more skeptical I’m becoming. Peeta looks nothing like I imagined him to. Katniss as well. Womp womp.

Christy on

Give ‘em a break, the movie isn’t ever like the book & the mind can do much more than the hand. Hunger Games the movie will be great!

Jess on

These look like an ice capade satire on SNL.

Antonio on

Really like @Christy said there’s only so much you can do with a book turning into a movie. First of all i think if you wanted to see everything in The Hunger Games the movie would have had to be in Anime, and i don’t think that would’ve pleased fans. So far as a BIG! Hunger Game Fan i am pleased, the clothes really dont matter to me neither do the looks as much, its the way they are bringing it to life which makes me happy.

Ally on

I’m sure the movie will be awesome! If you don’t go see it then they won’t make a 2nd or 3rd one… so go see it!!

D on

Jennifer is a wonderful actress, so we know going into yet another YA series at least this leading lady can act! I am, however, sad that Lionsgate has now acquired Summit. That worries me where this series is concerned. But I have faith in Jenn & rest of cast to bring HG to life!

Kimberly on

The costumes will look so cool when they are on fire. I think the pictures coming out look so impressive! I can’t wait for the movie!!

Elletnah on

I wouldn’t care if Josh was purple and had wings, he would still be my Peeta. I trust Susan Collins, she fell in love with Joshes interpretation of Peeta and if she is convinced that I am.
As for the costumes? I can’t wait to see them lit up!! Peeta looks like he wants to bolt at any moment and Katniss is like “…Bring it” I love it!!

Emmy on

Ahem. If you read the book, it said that she wore a black suit with a cape that shimmered with fire :)

Deets on

I second Emmy. The fire costume was black in the book.

BreeCan2 on

I imagined it black so I had to check it out. I skimmed through the first book to find it but it definitely says black.. It describes a simple black leotard with shiny leather boots and a cape made of streams of orange, yellow and red.

Rave on

You gotta trust Suzanne Collins that she picked the right people. But, Anna, they were black in the book. I didn’t picture these with sleeves, they’re still badass.

SB on

You have to remember that they come from the District that mines COAL!!!! The outfits are not supposed to be “stunning” at first glance. They are described in the book to look like glinting coal in the sun. Which THEY DO!! The dramatics come later…you seriously think they’re going to show you the “special effect” in a snap shot…NO!!! They’ll save that for the movie…stop criticizing before you see it!! From what I’ve seen so far, the casting & look seem spot on!!!!

Suua P. on

Jenn and Josh make such a cute couple!

Velvet on

This isn’t how I pictured these costumes looking; I pictured them being white before the flames. But I’m excited to see what they can do with it.

Chloe on

I like the outfits, they look contoured and sexy. What did people have in mind? These look great, and with a little Photoshop, they’ll look even better. I mean, with the flames and all. Peeta looks nothing like i thought he would, tho. Katniss is exactly as I imagined her. I still can’t wait for the movie!

Unitard…that is not a unitard. It isn’t what I thought at all. I pictured a skin tight, matt black outfit with long sleeves and long pants. I imagined the unitard being nothing special at all…until it was lit:)

Tiffany on

I thought she was supposed to look like she’s on fire?!

Kat on

This was exactly how I imagined the bodysuits would look – I can’t wait to see them “on fire”. YAY!

Britni Rose on

I’m stunned. This is pretty close to how I pictured them, with the shoulders big like that. I didn’t picture the texture though. So far I am so happy with this. OMG. So happy.

ash on

everyone pictures things different in there mind. i pictured everything exactly like this escpecially katniss, peeta is so-so but i’m still so excited!!!

Salahuddin on

Must read book for 2012, Along the Naktong by Joshua Lorenzo Newett. It is the best book I’ve read in a long time and has inspired me to change my life and take the trip I’ve been dreaming about since I was 20. A trip on the Trains Siberian RR .

kenz on

This looks like what their costumes are described in Catching Fire.

hhfhf on

@ Anna in the books the costumes were black until lit and this is picture is them before they were lit so they will a fiery colour

HallieS on

Did any of you read the book? He sets the costumes alight right before they walk out. This is them before they’ve been lit obviously.

Sari on

I’m really looking forward to the movie… Everything I’ve seen so far has been exactly as I pictured it in the books. Maybe reading it when I knew a movie was coming out helped “convert” the images for me…

Sue on

gah~~-.- I damn hope that it wont turn out to be like Percy Jackson movie…
Logan Lerman was perfect percy but he failed…. the movie failed…
please be epic like harry Potter <3

jennette on

people need to stop being so picky. whether or not they are exactly what you imagined, they are still cool. too many people are throwing a fit because the costume isnt plucked straight from their memory. its a major motion picture people. get the eff over it and accept the coolness of it!!

penny on

Sorry, the girl who plays Katniss does not look like a girl she looks like a grown woman Sort of misses the the whole point of the horrific nature of “The Games”, that it is the people’s beloved children/ young teens are forced to do battle to the death in order to keep the population intimidated and controlled and powerless. There are plenty of actresses as good or better both known and unknown who are the right age that they could have found to do the part and make it more credible and true to the theme yet everyone will say the movie is great weather it is or not because they are all just like the people in the books themselves; gutless, they all believe what they are told to believe no one dares to have their own opinion and they don’t even realize it very sad

jude law lover! on

No!! i can already tell there messing some things up! they dont look right at all!

anonymous on

I dont get why everyones so upset! The casting is perfect and every picture makes me more and more excited! jeesh, how can it get better?

Madison on

Why not Anna?? They aren’t on fire yet but if you payed special attention to the book you would know that the costumes were black before they were lit on fire :)

penny on

anonymous just proved my point

After reading all these negative comments, I can’t help but laugh. Seriously! These costumes are part of ONE SCENE, which you haven’t seen yet, and you’re acting like the movie is officially over. True, it’s an iconic scene, however that’s no reason to start bashing the movie when you haven’t even seen it!

Some of you need to remember that this movie is BASED OFF THE BOOK. What does that mean? It means they can make as many changes as they want!

p.s. I always imagined the fire suits to be black. They come from District 12 … where they mine COAL! Coal is NOT brown, or cream, or beige … it is BLACK!

Rachel on

Really, They look like they were described in the book – black jumpsuits. When they’re set on fire they’re look different. But they look perfect to me.

Adam on

its the fact that they will be on fire or not htat counts, i saw the outside as like a black flame retardant fabric, but that is just me. and anyway, didnt the author work with the movie people? this is THEIR vision, not ours.

Cant wait for the movie :D

Ellie on

Look like they were described to me…maybe not expecting the texture but that is a tiny detail. One note: this was when they were first introduced to the capitol, not the night before the games begin.

Idiots who say black isn’t good- District 12->coal->black->set coal on fire.

They look great to me! I can’t wait to see them on fire! Counting down to March 23rd. Reading a lot of these comments, people are just complaining for the sake of complaining. No movie adaptation is ever going to precisely match what you envision in your mind. Just be happy you are getting a movie at all!
